Efficient catalysis in dynamic nanomicelles of PS-750-M suspended in water

This review demonstrates the multiple roles of surfactants in aqueous micellar catalysis. It covers the design and recent applications of proline-based amphiphile PS-750-M, including completely organic solvent-free amide couplings, C–H fluorination of arenes and heteroarenes achieved via radical pathway facilitated by the shielding effect of micelles. In addition, it critically sheds light on selective hydrogenolysis and cross-couplings of water-sensitive acid chlorides in water, catalyzed by phosphine ligand-free Pd (0) nanoparticles. The metal-micelle interaction responsible for catalytic activities as probed by various spectroscopic techniques is also discussed.     

Isosteres of peptides: boron analogs as dipolar forms of α‐amino acids – a theoretical study

Modification of peptides to produce peptidomimetics is of great interest, with the aim of designing potent, selective, and metabolically stable analogs having certain conformational properties. Organoboranes have been reported in the literature with a wide range of therapeutic applications. One of the therapeutically important class of molecules is amine‐carboxyboranes derived from amino acids by replacement of the Cα atom of an amino acid/peptide by boron. The conformational preferences of these peptides, with respect to backbone ω, ?, and ψ torsion angles, have been investigated by theoretical calculations. The amide bond in these molecules has the same geometry in the ground and transition states as the natural peptides. However, the boron isosteres of glycine and alanine peptides are less structured than their natural derivatives, but are distinguished by structures with a positive value for the ? angle, which is normally disfavored for natural peptides. This property could be used to build peptides with a geometry not usually seen in natural peptides. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Molecular programming of organogelators which can accept [60]fullerene by encapsulation

New porphyrin-based gelators bearing eight hydrogen-bond-forming amide groups at their periphery were synthesized. They acted as versatile gelators for aromatic solvents. SEM and TEM observations and X-ray crystallographic analysis established that they tend to aggregate into a two-dimensional sheet-like structure utilizing the intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interaction. In this structure the porphyrin-porphyrin π-π stacking interaction is not involved because of the energetically-predominant hydrogen-bonding interactions, keeping the space distance of 12.9 Å. Very interestingly, when C₆₀ was added, the morphology was transformed to a one-dimensional fibrous structure, which can enjoy a porphyrin-C₆₀-porphyrin interaction. This multicapsular structure having porphyrin-based compartments for hosting C₆₀ was further characterized by XRD, EPR of a Cu(II) analogue, and the theoretical calculation. Thus, this paper presents a new concept, ‘molecular recognition in gel’, which is effective for the weak host-guest interaction.

One-step deprotonation route to zinc amide and ester enolates for use in aldol reactions and Negishi couplings

Simple amides and esters are conveniently deprotonated by Zn(tmp)₂ (tmp = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl anion) to generate Zn enolates. Enolates formed by this method are suitable for use in aldol reactions that tolerate base-sensitive functional groups. Additionally, the Zn enolates are readily coupled with aryl bromides using typical Pd-catalyzed coupling methods.     

KMnO4-mediated oxidative CN bond cleavage of tertiary amines: Synthesis of amides and sulfonamides

KMnO₄-mediated oxidative CN bond cleavage of tertiary amines producing secondary amine was introduced, which was trapped by electrophiles (acyl chloride and sulfonyl chloride) to form amides and sulfonamides. The reaction could take place at mild condition, tolerating a wide range of function groups and affording products in moderate to excellent yields.
