In this essay we explore analogies between macroscopic patterns, which result from a sequence of phase transitions/instabilities starting from a homogeneous state, and similar phenomena in cosmology, where a sequence of phase transitions in the early universe is believed to have separated the fundamental forces from each other, and also shaped the structure and distribution of matter in the universe. We discuss three distinct aspects of this analogy: (i) Defects and topological charges in macroscopic patterns are analogous to spins and charges of quarks and leptons; (ii) Defects in generic 3+1 stripe patterns carry an energy density that accounts for phenomena that are currently attributed to dark matter; (iii) Space-time patterns of interacting nonlinear waves display behaviors reminiscent of quantum phenomena including inflation, entanglement and dark energy.  相似文献

The angular dependence of light scattered by aerosol particles in the atmosphere—the aerosol phase function—is one of the key properties of every radiative transfer and climate model. Side-scattering in the atmosphere is currently believed to be underestimated by most of the radiative transfer models in certain cases. The aerosol phase function can be measured with polar nephelometers.An innovative polar nephelometer able to measure the phase function of ambient aerosol directly is presented in this publication. The performance of the device was simulated completely using ray-tracing techniques. The results of these simulations are used to interpret the measurement data precisely. The measurements with the new polar nephelometer are fully automated. The quality of the measurement results was verified using different approaches. The values of the statistical and systematic error in measuring atmospheric aerosol are about 4% each. Scattering angles from 10° to 160° were measured and it is shown that with the same design this range can be extended to 3-177° in steps of 0.16° with an aperture of less than 1.8°.Measurements of the aerosol phase function are presented and compared with data taken with an integrating nephelometer and measurements of the particulate matter concentration. All data correlate very well. The described polar nephelometer can measure the phase function and the scattering coefficient of atmospheric aerosol with high accuracy and can be used for continuous monitoring measurements as well as in field campaigns.  相似文献

There is experimental evidence that the non-sphericity of certain atmospheric particles can cause scattering properties different from those predicted by standard Mie theory. Numerous studies indicate the need to consider the presence of non-spherical particles in modeling the optical properties of atmospheric aerosols. On the other hand, natural aerosols show a great variety of shapes, making difficult a realistic choice of a particle shape (or shape mixture) model. In this paper, we test a parameterization of the particle shape in the retrieval of size distribution, phase function, single scattering albedo and asymmetry parameter from direct and sky-radiance measurements. For this purpose we have substituted the Kernel based on the Mie theory included in the model SKYRAD.PACK by one derived for non-spherical particles. The method is applied under different atmospheric conditions, including Saharan dust outbreak, polluted and local mineral episodes. We compare the results with those obtained by the well known spheroids algorithm used in the AERONET network.  相似文献

We succeed in synthesizing NbSe2 nanotubes along with nanofibers by chemical vapor transportation. They are stable crystalline systems and can be synthesized reproducibly in a nearly equilibrium reacting process. We have investigated these nanosize structures of NbSe2 by transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. Both of the structures have a similar size of 100–200 nm in diameter. While nanotubes consist of rolled-up NbSe2 layers, nanofibers are a pile of thin flat layers. We propose a mechanism of the formation of NbSe2 nanotubes and nanofibers on the basis of deseleniditive transition from a NbSe3 fiber-shaped crystal. We also measured electrical resistance of the nanofibers with conductive atomic force microscopy and demonstrated that the material show metallic behavior at room temperature.  相似文献

Summary The chelation behaviour of some trivalent lanthanide and yttrium metal ion with biologically active 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (HNATS) has been investigated by potentiomotric measurements at 20±0.5°C in 75% (v/v) dioxane-water medium at various ionic strengths of sodium perchlorate. The method of Bjerrum and Calvin, as modified by Irving and Rossotti has been used to find out the values of (average number of ligand bound per metal ion) andpL (free ligand exponent). The formation constants of metal chelates have been computed on a PC-XT computer, using a program patterned after that of Sullivan et al. to give n values using weighted least squares method. TheS min values (S min =2) have been calculated. The order of formation constants of chelates was found to be: La3+3+3+3+3+3+3+3+3+3+. The formation constants of the chelates formed have been correlated to size and ionization potentials of the metal ions.
Potentiometrische Untersuchungen der Komplexierungsgleichgewichte zwischen einigen trivalenten Metallionen und biologisch aktivem 2-Hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyd-thiosemicarbazon (HNATS)
Zusammenfassung Es wurde das Chelierungsverhalten einiger trivalenter Lanthanidenionen mit biologisch aktivem 2-Hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyd-thiosemicarbazon (HNATS) mittels potentiometrischer Messungen bei 20±0.5°C in 75% (v/v) Dioxan-Wasser bei verschiedener Ionenstärke an Natriumperchlorat untersucht. Die Methode nach Bjerrum und Calvin in der Modifikation nach Irving und Rossotti wurde zur Ermittlung der Werte (mittlere Anzahl an Liganden pro Metallion) undpL (Exponent an freiem Liganden) verwendet. Die Komplexbildungskonstanten wurden in Anlehnung an Sullivan et al. an einem PC-XT Computer errechnet. DieS min-Werte (S min=2) wurden ebenfalls bestimmt. Die Reihung der Chelatbildungskonstanten war: La3+3+3+3+3+3+3+3+3+3+. Die Bildungskonstanten sind mit der Größe und dem Ionisierungspotential der Metallionen zu korrelieren.

The hydrothermal syntheses of the alkali metal molybdenum bronzes from starting solids (HxMoO3) with structural affinities to the desired products were investigated. Single-phase potassium blue and red bronzes were prepared by the hydrothermal treatments at around 430 K, and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, and SEM. The formation processes of these two bronzes during the hydrothermal treatments were found to differ. The blue bronze was formed by a structure-inheriting solid-state route from HxMoO3 with x<0.3, whereas the red bronze was formed for x>0.3 through a solution dissolution/deposition route via the formation of MoO3+MoO2.  相似文献

Measurement of polarographic limiting currents at equilibria made it possible at pH 3-7 to simultaneously determine concentrations of benzaldehyde, of its hydrazone and of the carbinolamine derivative. The dependence of concentration of carbinolamine at equilibrium on pH indicated presence of its di-, mono-, and unprotonated forms. Acid dissociation constants of the formation (pKa1≈3.2) of the diprotonated form and of the dissociation of the monoprotonated form of carbinolamine (pKa2≈4.7) were estimated. The equilibrium constants of formation (K1) and dehydration (K2) of the carbinolamine intermediate were determined.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Das Chelierungsverhalten von La3+, Ce3+, Pr3+, Nd3+, Sm3+, Eu3+, Gd3+, Y3+, Tb3+, Dy3+ und Ho3+ mit 2-Hydroxy-1-naphthaldehydsemicarbazon (HNAS) wurde potentiometrisch in 75% (v/v) Dioxan-Wasser bei verschiedenen Ionenstärken untersucht. Die Werte für n undpL wurden nach der Methode von Bjerrum und Calvin in der Modifikation von Irving und Rossotti bestimmt. Die Komplexbildungskonstanten der Metallchelate und die WerteS min wurden ermittelt. Die Reihung der Komplexbildungskonstanten war La3+3+3+3+3+3+3+3+3+33+.
