Synthesis of lanosterol derivatives with a functional group at C-32, including an antineoplastic sterol, 3 beta-hydroxylanost-7-en-32-oic acid

Lanosterol derivatives with a functional group at C-32 have been synthesized from 3 beta-acetoxylanostan-7 alpha-ol. The key reaction of the synthesis is the hypoiodite reaction of 3 beta-acetoxylanostan-7 alpha-ol. In vitro antitumor activity testing of the lanosterol derivatives revealed that 3 beta-hydroxylanost-7-en-32-oic acid has antineoplastic activity.     

Floating-island TFT leakage caused by process step reduction

The leakage mechanism for a top-gate thin-film transistor (TFT) produced using the fewest process steps in the industry is analyzed in order to achieve a high-contrast liquid crystal display (LCD). Using a T-shaped TFT structure, the OFF and ON channel lengths are defined independently, so that the leakage can be reduced with no ON current decrease     

Identification of Al(III) species in a solution containing equimolar concentrations of Al(III) and citric acid using varying-temperature 27Al NMR spectrometry.

27Al NMR spectra of an equimolar (10 mM) Al(III)-citrate system were obtained at different temperatures. The linewidths of the signals decreased in the spectra recorded at elevated temperatures, which enabled us to unequivocally identify the resonance lines. From the spectrum recorded at 65 approximately C, a mononuclear Al(III)-citrate complex was identified at a solution pH of 3.0 in addition to trinuclear Al(III)-citrate complex, which dominated at pH 4.0.     

Photolithographic packaging with selectively occupied repeatedtransfer (PL-Pack with SORT) for scalable film optical linkmultichip-module (S-FOLM)

"Photolithographic packaging (PL-pack) with selectively occupied repeated transfer (SORT)" is proposed for optoelectronic microsystem integration. PL-pack with SORT integrates different types of thin-film device pieces into one substrate with desired configurations using an all-photolithographic process. A process design example is presented for a scalable film optical link multichip-module (S-FOLM). A preliminary estimation reveals that PL-Pack with SORT will achieve III-V epitaxial material saving of <1/100 and module cost reduction of <1/10, compared with flip-chip-bonding-based packaging. The result indicates that the process will save on cost and resources simultaneously. A critical issue is how to simplify the procedure for distributing thin-film device pieces onto a substrate. SORT is found to reduce the distribution step count typically by factor of <1/10-1/10000 compared with the conventional one-by-one method. PL-pack with SORT will be extended to the 3R process (reduce, reuse, recycle), which is generally applied to a variety of device/module fabrications     

Coupling ratio control of polymeric waveguide couplers by bending

Directional couplers are successfully fabricated on acrylic substrates using polymers synthesised from deuterated methacrylate and deuterated fluoromethacrylate monomers. The excess loss of a 50 mm long coupler is about 0.7 dB including waveguide and fibre coupling losses. A novel method is proposed for tuning the coupling ratio. By bending the coupler, high precision control of within 1% is attained without optical polarisation dependence.<>     

Dependence of the efficiency-bandwidth product on electrical volumeof small dielectric loaded antennas

The efficiency fractional efficiency bandwidth product (EB) that is expressed as a ratio of the radiation resistance to the absolute value of an input reactance of an antenna is used as a performance measure for small dielectric-loaded monopole antennas (DLMAs). The dependence of the efficiency bandwidth (EB) on the permittivity of the dielectric loading (i.e., the electrical volume) is experimentally investigated for the first time after we succeeded in measuring the small radiation resistance of the DLMAs precisely on the basis of the Wheeler cap method. As a result, it was found that the EBs of some DLMAs were enhanced over a bare monopole antenna and an EB characteristic curve has a maximum point. This result suggests the presence of the optimum electrical volume for the dielectric loading in order to obtain the best EB performance. A calculation by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method was also conducted to confirm the presence of the maximum EB value under a certain condition. A general reason for the existence of the peak value is also explained using a mathematical deduction     

Inductively-coupled plasma/atomic emission spectrometry of sulfur with a vacuum scanning spectrometer and its application to the analysis of coal liquefaction catalysts

Inductively-coupled plasma/atomic emission spectrometry with a high-resolution vacuum scanning monochromator is described for the determination of sulfur at 180.734 nm. The behavior of the signal-to-background ratio is investigated as functions of RF power, argon gas flow rate and observation height above the load coil. Under the operating conditions selected, the detection limit is 3 μg l^?1. The Se I 196.090-nm line is chosen as internal standard, because the S/Se line pair exhibited the least change with carrier gas flow rate and acid concentration of solution. Sulfur in NiMo and CoMo/ Al₂O₃ catalysts used for coal liquefaction is determined as S(II) and S(VI) species. The total amount of the species agreed well with the sulfur value obtained by the conventinal combustion method.     

Effects of various thiol molecules added on morphology of dendrimer-gold nanocomposites

Interactions between poly(amidoamine) dendrimer (PAMAM)-gold nanocomposites and alkanethiols and between the former nanocomposites and thiol-modified poly(amidoamine) dendrons in ethyl acetate were investigated by adding alkanethiols, such as 1-propanethiol and 1,3-propanedithiol, and thiol-modified poly(amidoamine) dendrons, generations 0.5 and 2.5 (G0.5-SH and G2.5-SH). The PAMAM dendrimers with surface methyl ester groups used were generations 1.5 and 5.5 (G1.5 and G5.5). The mean particle sizes of PAMAM-gold nanocomposites were about 2.1 for G1.5 and 2.4 nm for G5.5. In both nanocomposite systems where 1-propanethiol and 1,3-propanedithiol were added, the mean particle size was about 4 nm, twice that of the systems where these thiols were not added. Increasing the addition of 1,3-propanedithiol made the average particle size smaller for both nanocomposites systems. To compare with alkanethiol, thiol-modified poly(amidoamine) dendron with a highly branched structure on one side was synthesized. Using G2.5-SH as a protective agent, dendron-gold nanocomposites with mean diameters of 3 to 4 nm were obtained. The difference in particle size was seen only when the combination of PAMAM-gold nanocomposites and thiol-modified dendron was less sterically dense, modified dendron (G0.5-SH). The mechanisms for morphology changes in the dendrimer-gold nanocomposites by the addition of these thiols are discussed.
