New halogenated furanones from the marine alga delisea pulchra (cf. fimbriata)

An investigation of the natural products chemistry of the red alga Delisea pulchra, collected from the Cape Banks, New South Wales, Australia, yielded eight new polyhalogenated furanones (1–7) and the previously reported metabolites 8–24). The structures of 1–8 were determined from the interpretation of their 1D and 2D NMR, UV, IR and mass spectral data. For the first time, complete ¹H and ¹³C NMR data for compounds 14, 18, and 20-23 are reported.     

Direct conversion of benzylic and allylic alcohols to phosphonates

Benzyl phosphonate esters often serve as reagents in Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reactions. In most cases, they can be prepared from benzylic alcohols via formation of the corresponding halide followed by an Arbuzov reaction. To identify a more direct synthesis of phosphonate esters, we have developed a one-flask procedure for conversion of benzylic and allylic alcohols to the corresponding phosphonates through treatment with triethyl phosphite and ZnI(2).     

Circular arrays of radial and tangential dipoles for turnstile antennas

A method of obtaining a turnstile antenna from a circular array of radial or tangential dipoles is presented. Approximate current distributions, terminal admittances, and radiation fields are given for arrays of 3, 4, and 5 half-wavelength elements for various array diameters.     

Antiplasmodial and cytotoxic activities of drimane sesquiterpenes from Canella winterana

The hexane extract from the leaves of Canella winterana exhibited strong activity against the chloroquine sensitive (CQS) strain of Plasmodium falciparum (D10) in vitro (IC50 2.53 microg/mL). Bioassay guided fractionation of this extract has led to the isolation of 5 drimane-type sesquiterpenoids: 9-epideoxymuzigadial, 9-deoxymuzigadial, muzigadial, 3-beta-acetoxypolygodial and the newly isolated hemiacetal, named muzigodiol, with IC50-values of 1.01, 2.19, 0.31, 2.77 and 7.43 microg/mL, respectively. The first four compounds were tested for their cytotoxicity using Chinese Hamster Ovarian (CHO) cells, where they showed IC50-values of 1.82, 33.69, 1.18, and 58.31 microg/mL, respectively. A structure-activity relationship is discussed.     

Ultraviolet Radiation at Sites on the Antarctic Coast

Ground-based measurements of solar UV irradiance combined with calculations using satellite-based ozone data are able to define the variability in UV sunlight at Palmer Station and McMurdo Station, Antarctica over time scales of years. Special attention focuses on the spring and summer seasons. Satellite data show that the annual ozone loss that occurs during October was greater in1991–1992 than in1979–1980. This led to average noontime UVB irradiances computed for clear skies in the latter period that exceeded those in the earlier time by50–65%. However, a biologically weighted irradiance for suppression of photosynthesis in phytoplankton indigenous to the area near McMurdo Station increased by at most 5% over this period in response to the change in ozone owing to an important contribution from the UVA. At Palmer Station the behavior of ozone and cloudiness can mesh so as to produce the largest noontime UVB irradiances of the year in October as opposed to near summer solstice in December and January. Interannual variability in UVB irradiance during October, the month of the major ozone loss, is larger at Palmer than at McMurdo during the time spanned by ground-based irradiance measurements, being1990–1994. However, interannual variations in cloudiness were more important than changes in ozone in causing the observed year-to-year variability at Palmer Station. The opposite situation prevailed at McMurdo during October, where interannual variations in ozone were responsible for most of the year-to-year differences in UVB received at the ground.     

Optimized solvent-exchange synthesis method for C60 colloidal dispersions

An existing solvent exchange method used to produce aqueous suspensions of fullerene C(60) aggregates (nC(60)) using the solvents toluene, tetrahydrofuran, acetone, and water, has been optimized for producing 75 nm diameter particles. Numerous synthesis parameters were evaluated for their effects on colloid yield and particle size distribution. Varying the relative volumes used of the intermediate solvents relative to the initial toluene volume allowed the controlled tuning of the resulting particle size up to a diameter of 210 nm. The resulting suspensions produced 10-20 ppm concentrations and reduced the residual organic solvents to less than the detection limit of 1 ppm.

High magnetic shear gain in a liquid sodium stable Couette flow experiment: a prelude to an α-Ω dynamo

The Ω phase of the liquid sodium α-Ω dynamo experiment at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in cooperation with Los Alamos National Laboratory has demonstrated a high toroidal field B(?) that is ?8×B(r), where B(r) is the radial component of an applied poloidal magnetic field. This enhanced toroidal field is produced by the rotational shear in stable Couette flow within liquid sodium at a magnetic Reynolds number Rm?120. Small turbulence in stable Taylor-Couette flow is caused by Ekman flow at the end walls, which causes an estimated turbulence energy fraction of (δv/v)(2)～10(-3).
