An improved approach for hydrogen analysis in metal samples using single laser-induced gas plasma and target plasma at helium atmospheric pressure

We report in this paper the results of an experimental study on hydrogen analysis of solid samples in high pressure helium ambient gas employing the basic scheme of laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). It is shown that the metastable excited state of helium atom can be utilized to induce delayed excitation of the ablated hydrogen atoms, and thereby avoid the Stark broadening effect as well as overcoming the undesirable mismatch effect, which are responsible for inefficient excitation respectively. It is further demonstrated that for samples of high boiling-point materials such as zircaloy, successful hydrogen analysis can be achieved by a newly introduced double excitation technique employing single laser realized in a modified configuration of the conventional LIBS method. Laser cleaning of glass

The pulse lasers, YAG-, CO₂-, and N₂-lasers, are examined for use in the cleaning of glass. Cleaning is found to be due to the evaporation and sputtering of stains on the glass by the heat energy of the laser light. Only the N₂ laser can be used for the cleaning of the exit surface of the glass (the opposite side to the laser). A laser with a high peak power of about 10⁶J/s and short-pulse duration below 100 ns is found to be necessary in practice.     

Senecicannabine,a new pyrrolizidine alkaloid from senecio cannabifolius

The structure of senecicannabine($\text{1}$), a new mcrocyclic pyrrolizidine alkaloid isolated from $\text{Senecio cannabifolius}$, has been established by chemical study and X-ray analysis.     

Simultaneous catalytic removal of NOϰ and diesel soot particulates

The simultaneous removal of NO_? and soot particulates in an oxidizing atmosphere is desirable for the aftertreatment of diesel exhausts. After briefly reviewing the development of catalysts for reactions involving carbons, our recent studies on the simultaneous NO_?–soot removal using perovskite-related and spinel-type oxides are described.     

Borderline of hydrogen bonding of silanols

Two new silanols bearing very bulky silyl groups, (i-Pr₃ Si)₃SiOH and (t − BuMe₂Si)₃SiOH were prepared by peracidoxidation of their respective silanes. The X − ray crystallographic analysis revealed that (t − BuMe₂Si)₃ SiOH forms a dimeric structure with hydrogen bonding, while (i − Pr₃ Si)₃ SiOH exists as a monomer in the crystal. The effects of the size of the substituents as well as the reactivity of these silanols are discussed.     

A remarkable stereoselectivity switching upon solid-state versus solution-phase enantiodifferentiating photocyclodimerization of 2-anthracenecarboxylic acid mediated by native and 3,6-anhydro-γ-cyclodextrins

The enantiodifferentiating [4+4] photocyclodimerization of anthracenecarboxylic acid (AC) mediated by native, mono- and di-3,6-anhydro-γ-cyclodextrins was investigated in both aqueous solution and solid-state. The solid-state photolyses gave inherently disfavored head-to-head photodimers in much higher chemical and optical yields than in the aqueous solution.     

Solubility of α-amino acids in water under high pressure: glycine, -alanine, -valine, -leucine, and -isoleucine

The solubility of glycine, -alanine, -valine, -leucine, and -isoleucine in water was measured at 298.15 K and pressures up to 400 MPa. The standard deviation of the logarithm of the solubility is 0.001–0.003, equal to or better than the accuracy of atmospheric pressure measurement in the literature (0.001–0.05). A variety of solubility phenomena were observed. The solubility of glycine decreased with increasing pressure, whereas that of -alanine increased. The -valine and -isoleucine have a solubility maximum at around 100 MPa, and -leucine seems to exhibit a solid-phase phase transition at around 200 MPa. Pressure coefficient of the solubilities at 0.10 MPa is compared with that thermodynamically estimated in reference to aqueous density measurements of glycine and -alanine at 298.15 K and 0.10 MPa, supporting a reliability of our high-pressure measurements.     

Formation of non-racemic E- and Z-olefins based on discrimination of enantiotopic carbonyl groups in α-diketones by a chiral phosphonate reagent

A chiral HWE reagent reacted with an alternative carbonyl group of meso-α-diketones of bicyclo[2.2.1] system to give non-racemic (Z)- and (E)-olefins, respectively.     

Stereoselective E/Z photoisomerization of oxazolidinone functionalized enecarbamates: direct and triplet sensitized irradiation

Oxazolidinone-functionalized enecarbamates undergo diastereoselective E/Z photoisomerization upon direct and triplet sensitized irradiations with chiral/achiral sensitizers, showing that the enhanced product diastereoselectivity depends on the solvent and temperature.     

Heterocycles. XXVI. A total synthesis of optically pure (+)-catechin pentaacetate

A total synthesis of optically pure (+)-catechin pentaacetate has been established using the (-)-chalcon epoxide (100% ee) derived from 3,4,2′,4′,6′-pentakis(methoxymethoxy)chalcon as the starting material. The optical purity of the product is confirmed by ¹H nmr analysis in the presence of a shift reagent.
