Fluorescence study of an immobilized ligand—metal ion complex

A ligand known to form a fluorescent complex with aluminum ion was immobilized on silica gel. The immobilization sequence was verified by cross-polarization magicangle spinning n.m.r. spectroscopy and diffuse reflectance u.v. spectroscopy. The solid-state fluorescence of the immobilized ligand complexed with aluminum ion was similar to the fluorescence of a solvated complex of a model ligand. The potential to eliminate possible interfering species by isolating the complex from solution was demonstrated.     

Synthesis and novel reactivity of halomethyldimethylsulfonium salts

Iodomethyl-, chloromethyl-, and fluoromethyldimethylsulfonium salts, 4b-d, have been synthesized and are observed to be highly reactive molecules that exhibit extraordinary diversity with respect to the nature of their reactivity, undergoing facile direct substitution (S(N)2) reactions, but also being highly susceptible to electron-transfer reactions. Cyclic voltametry experiments indicated that the iodomethyldimethylsulfonium compound, 4b, is a potent electron acceptor, even surpassing the reactivity of perfluoro-n-alkyl iodides in that capacity. The iodo- and chloromethyldimethylsulfonium salts, 4b,c, as well as the analogous iodomethyltrimethylammonium salt, 3a, are shown to be reactive SET acceptors.     

A-dependence of high-energy inelastic electron-nucleus scattering

Cross sections for inclusive inelastic electron scattering from H, D, Be, Al, Cu and Au have been measured at 6° for incident energies up to 19.5 GeV. Within the stated errors, the cross sections were found to be directly proportional to the sum of the constituent nucleon cross sections.     

Measurement of the single-jet invariant cross section at Fermilab

In an experiment performed at Fermilab we have studied the production of high p_t hadron jets from 400 GeV/c pp interactions. A large solid-angle, towered calorimeter was used to trigger and reconstruct the jet events. We report results for inclusive single-jet production and compare those results with QCD predictions and results obtained at the ISR and the SPS Collider.     

Determination of cyanide ion by homogeneous catalysis and gas chromatography

A simple procedure for the determination of trace levels of cyanide ions is described and evaluated. The procedure is based on the cyanide-catalyzed cleavage of benzil in the presence of methanol to produce benzaldehyde and methyl benzoate. The concentrations of these products are determined by gas chromatography. Linearity between gas chromatographic response and cyanide concentration is observed from 0.05 to 3 ppm cyanide; a detection limit of 1 ppb is calculated. A series of anions is shown not to interfere.
