An amphiphilic heteroarm star polymer containing 12 alternating hydrophobic/hydrophilic arms of polystyrene (PS) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) connected to a well-defined rigid aromatic core was studied at the air-water and the air-solid interfaces. At the air-water interface, the molecules spontaneously form pancakelike micellar aggregates which measure up to several microns in diameter and 5 nm in thickness. Upon reduction of the surface area per molecule to 7 nm2, the two-dimensional micelles merged into a dense monolayer. We suggest that confined phase separation of dissimilar polymer arms occurred upon their segregation on the opposite sides of the rigid disklike aromatic core, forcing the rigid cores to adopt a face-on orientation with respect to the interface. Upon transfer onto solid supports the PS chains face the air-film interface making it completely hydrophobic, and the PAA chains were found to collapse and form a thin flattened underlayer. This study points toward new strategies to create large 2D microstructures with facial amphiphilicity and suggests a profound influence of star molecular architecture on the self-assembly of amphiphiles at the air-water interface.  相似文献

Neutron scattering studies of single crystal LiNiPO4 reveal a spontaneous first-order commensurate-incommensurate magnetic phase transition. Short- and long-range incommensurate phases are intermediate between the high temperature paramagnetic and the low temperature antiferromagnetic phases. The modulated structure has a predominant antiferromagnetic component, giving rise to satellite peaks in the vicinity of the fundamental antiferromagnetic Bragg reflection, and a ferromagnetic component, giving rise to peaks at small momentum transfers around the origin at (0,+/-Q,0). The wavelength of the modulated magnetic structure varies continuously with temperature. It is argued that the incommensurate short- and long-range phases are due to spin-dimensionality crossover from a continuous to the discrete Ising state.  相似文献

Soft X-ray resonant scattering studies at the Mn LII, III- and the La MIV, V- edges of single-crystal LaSr2Mn2O7 are reported. At low temperatures, below TN ≈ 160 K, energy scans with a fixed momentum transfer at the A-type antiferromagnetic (0 0 1) reflection around the Mn LII, III-edges with incident linear σ and π polarizations show strong resonant enhancements. The splitting of the energy spectra around the Mn LII, III-edges may indicate the presence of a mixed valence state, e.g., Mn3+/Mn4+. The relative intensities of the resonance and the clear shoulder-feature as well as the strong incident σ and π polarization dependences strongly indicate its complex electronic origin. Unexpected enhancement of the charge Bragg (0 0 2) reflection at the La MIV, V-edges with σ polarization has been observed up to 300 K, with an anomaly appearing around the orbital-ordering transition temperature, TOO ≈ 220 K, suggesting a strong coupling (competition) between them.  相似文献

The purple membrane (PM) of Halobacterium salinarum contains a single type of protein, bacterio-rhodopsin (bR), which is a member of the seven alpha-helices transmembrane protein family. This protein is a photoactive proton pump, translocating one proton from the cytoplasmic to the extracellular side of the PM per photon absorbed. bR is found in trimers in PM, where they are assembled in a two-dimensional hexagonal lattice. We show herein that stable and functional films can be built in monolayers at the air-water interface by spreading aqueous suspensions of purified and native PM patches. In situ spectroscopic measurements at the air-water interface indicate that bR remains photoactive in this environment. Physical parameters of these PM films, such as protein molecular area, irreversible in-plane aggregation, z-axis orientation, film thickness, and surface roughness, were determined from surface pressure and surface potential-area isotherms, fluorescence spectroscopy, and X-ray reflectivity at the air-water interface. We find that PM do form organized monolayers of membranes, with an optimal packing density at a surface pressure of approximately 20 mN/m, although no preferential vectorial alignment, with respect to the plane normal to the membrane, can be detected from fluorescence quenching experiments.  相似文献

Anionic dimyristoylphosphatidic acid monolayers spread on LaCl3 solutions reveal strong cation adsorption and a sharp transition to surface overcharging at unexpectedly low bulk salt concentrations. We determine the surface accumulation of La3+ with anomalous x-ray reflectivity and find that La3+ compensates the lipid surface charge by forming a Stern layer with approximately 1 La3+ ion per 3 lipids below a critical bulk concentration, ct approximately 500 nM. Above ct, the surface concentration of La3+ increases to a saturation level with approximately 1 La3+ per lipid, thus implying that the total electric charge of the La3+ exceeds the surface charge. This overcharge is observed at approximately 4 orders of magnitude lower concentration than predicted in ion-ion correlation theories. We suggest that transverse electrostatic correlations between mobile ions and surface charges (interfacial Bjerrum pairing) may contribute to the charge inversion.  相似文献

Four generations of monodendrons with multiple dodecyl alkyl tails (AA-N, N representing number of alkyl tails from 1 to 8), an azobenzene spacer group, and a carboxylic acid polar head have been studied at the air-water and air-solid interface using AFM, GIXD, X-ray reflectivity, and UV-vis spectrometry. The one and two tail molecules formed orthorhombic lateral packing with long-range intramonolayer ordering. Good agreement between molecular models and thickness measurements indicated that the one and two tail molecules orient along the surface normal. The increase in the cross-sectional mismatch caused by the presence of the multiple chains for the higher generations disrupted the long-range ordering and forced the alkyl tails to adopt quasi-hexagonal structure. The higher generations (AA-4 and AA-8) formed a kinked structure with the alkyl tails oriented perpendicular to the surface with the azobenzene group tilted at a large degree toward the surface. The photoisomerization behavior in dilute solutions, at the air-water interface, and for grafted layers demonstrated that lower generation monodendrons maintained the photochromic behavior after chemical grafting to the silicon substrates, although the confinement of the molecules in monolayers significantly increased the reorganization time.  相似文献

An unusual variety of magnetic, magnetoelectric and ferrotoroidic properties was observed in the lithium-orthophosphates LiMPO4 with M = Fe, Co, Ni by optical second harmonic generation. In spite of a largely similar magnetic and crystallographic structure the compounds exhibit pronounced differences in the topology of antiferromagnetic 180° domains. In LiCoPO4 the antiferromagnetic domains coexist with ferrotoroidic, i.e., magnetic vortex domains. For LiNiPO4 it was shown that the weak ferrimagnetic moment of the LiMPO4 compounds along the spin direction is rigidly coupled to the AFM order parameter so that the sign of the magnetoelectric effect is reversed by a magnetic field only. Further effects of a static magnetic field on the system are discussed.  相似文献
