A method for hydrogen content control of UO2 fuels

A new method for hydrogen content control over UO₂ based on laser microsampling in a noble gas flow as well as independent ways of hydrogen detection are proposed. Solid electrolytic cell and a metal-insulator-semiconductor sensor are used for hydrogen registration. The limit of detection is about 10^–11 g H₂... Elastic properties of chemically modified baker's yeast cells studied by AFM

Chemical pretreatment is widely used to facilitate transformation of living cells when foreign components are introduced into a cell through the cell wall. The influence of appropriate chemicals on the wall properties and mechanism of transformation is still a matter of intensive studies. Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells (also known as baker's yeast) were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The cell walls were modified by lithium acetate and dithiothreitol. The AFM imaging was performed in liquid water‐based environment. The living cells were fixed by trapping into the holes of a polycarbonate membrane. Mechanical and morphological properties of initial intact cells and treated cells were investigated. The increased stiffness of the chemically treated cells was observed. As deduced from the applied theoretical Hertz‐Sneddon model, the treated cells show completely different response mechanism to applied mechanical pressure in comparison with the intact cells. Also, the increased roughness of the cell wall of the treated yeasts was observed. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Investigation of multibaryonic resonances with strangeness equal to and different from zero

Results on a search for Λp, ΛΛ, Λpp, K^op, pp, 3p and 4p resonances are presented. The Λp effective-mass spectrum reveals three significant peaks (more than 4 s.d.) at 2058, 2127 and 2252 MeV. The first two peaks are shown to be due to effects of the negative Λp and Σp scattering lengths respectively, whereas the third peak is interpreted as a Λp resonance of (2251.4 ± 3.9) MeV mass and Λ = (21.1 ± 5.4) MeV full width. The two enhancements observed in the ΛΛ effective-mass spectrum may be due to the effect of the negative ΛΛ scattering length and to a ΛΛ resonance of ～2370 MeV mass. No enhancements in other effective-mass spectra are observed. The results of this work suggest a condition for the possibility of resonance formation depending on the total hypercharge of the system considered.
