Reduction of dislocation density and improvement of optical quality in ZnO layers by MgO-buffer annealing

Optical properties of ZnO thin films with/without MgO-buffer annealing were investigated by low and room temperature photoluminescence measurements. The ZnO films were grown on c-sapphire substrates by plasma-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy employing a thin MgO-buffer layer. Dislocation density of ZnO layer was reduced from 5.3 × 10⁹ to 1.9 × 10⁹ cm⁻² by annealing MgO-buffer prior to the growth of ZnO. The intensity of free exciton emission from the sample with MgO-buffer annealing was almost twice of that from the sample without annealing, while the deep level emission from the sample with MgO-buffer annealing was about 1/3 of that without annealing. The MgO-buffer annealing improves optical quality of overgrown ZnO films.     

Catalysis in aromatic nucleophilic substitution. Note II. Piperidino substitution reactions of some 2-l-3-nitrothiophenes and 2-l-5-nitrothiophenes in methanol and benzene

The rates of piperidino substitution of some 2-L-3-nitrothiophenes (I) and 2-L-5-nitrothiophenes (II) (L = Cl, Br, I, OC₆H₄NO₂-p, and SO₂Ph) have been measured in methanol and in benzene at various piperidine concentrations. The reactivity of compounds (I) is not affected by the piperidine concentration in both methanol and benzene, except for the case of L = I (Ic). Probably due to association effects, the reactivity of Ic in benzene decreases as the piperidine concentration is increased. The reactions of compounds II follow overall second order kinetics in methanol while in benzene a different behaviour is observed as a function of the nature of the leaving group. In fact, the piperidino substitutions of IIa-c (L = Cl, Br, I) are mildly accelerated at high piperidine concentrations (a moderate solvent effect); on the contrary the reactivity of IId and e shows a strong dependence on the piperidine concentration, pointing out a genuine base catalysis.     

Metal Oxoclusters as Molecular Building Blocks for the Development of Nanostructured Inorganic–Organic Hybrid Thin Films

Silica-based inorganic–organic hybrid thin films embedding the organically modified oxohafnium clusters (Hf₄O₂(OMc)₁₂, OMc=OC(O)–C(CH₃)=CH₂) were obtained by photo-activated free radical copolymerisation of the methacrylate groups of the cluster with those of the pre-hydrolysed (methacryloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (MAPTMS, (CH₂=C(CH₃)C(O)O)(CH₂)₃Si(OCH₃)₃). By this route, a covalent anchoring of the cluster to the forming silica network was achieved. Samples characterized by two different Si/Hf compositions (18:1, 5:1) were prepared. The surface and in-depth composition of the thin films were investigated through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). XPS depth profiles performed on the thin layers evidenced a homogenous in depth distribution of the hafnium guest species within the whole silica films and sharp film-substrate interfaces. Broad band dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) measurements permitted to investigate the electric response of the obtained films in the frequency and temperature range of 40 Hz – 1 MHz and 0–160°C.     

Regioselective epoxide ring opening. Steroselective synthesis of a tetrahydropyran ring

The stereoselective synthesis of a 2-substituted tetrahydropyran with adjacent alkoxy-bearing stereogenic centre is described. The key steps of this synthesis were the stereoselective epoxidation of an allylic alcohol and the regioselective epoxide ring opening by lithium aluminum hydride. The regio and stereoselective synthesis of a trihydroxyselenide and a trihydroxysulfide is also described. The latter compounds are not suitable for cyclization to tetrahydrofuran ring.     

Electrochemical control of CO/NO ligand exchange in a triruthenium cluster monolayer assembled on a gold electrode surface

A highly selective ligand exchange reaction is realized in the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of a triruthenium cluster on a gold electrode surface under precise electrochemical potential control. CO as well as NO molecules, which are known to play key roles in many chemical, biological, and environmental systems, can be efficiently introduced into the SAM by electrochemically tuning the electronic state of the Ru site. These unique surface reactions are more convenient and efficient than conventional ligand exchange reactions in solution and could be used for the elucidation of the electron-transfer mechanism in a biological system as well as in the development of molecular sensors and devices.     

Determination of alkylphenols and alkylphenol polyethoxylates by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography and solid-phase extraction

A simple, accurate and reproducible reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was developed for the separation and characterisation of alkylphenols (APs) and alkylphenol polyethoxylates (APEOs), using a C18 octadecyl silica (ODS) column. APs and each APEO oligomer were separated successfully within a reasonable time without gradient elution. An excellent resolution was obtained, even for mixtures of APs and low EO number APEOs, which are otherwise difficult to separate using conventional normal-phase HPLC methods. This method, combined with solid-phase extraction, was highly applicable for the simultaneous determination of alkylphenols and alkylphenol ethoxylates in real samples.     

Crystal structure and reactivity of 2-chloro-3,5-dinitrothiophene and of 2-phenylsulphonyl-3,5-dinitrothiophene with nucleophiles

The geometry obtained by a crystal structure determination of the title compounds, as compared with that of the analogous benzene derivatives, along with results of ab initio calculations, is used to interpret the different S_NAr reactivities in some thiophene and benzene compounds. The smaller rotation of the nitro groups with respect to the aromatic rings observed in thiophene derivatives should be considered a relevant factor in the higher reactivity in the thiophene series.

Diastereoselective synthesis of 2-phenylselenenyl-1,3-anti-diols and 2-phenylselenenyl-1,3-anti-azido-alcohols via hydroxy and azido-selenenylation reactions

A method to synthesize 2-phenylselenenyl-1,3-anti-diols and 2-phenyl- selenenyl-1,3-anti-azidoalcohols via hydroxy- or azido-selenenylation of trans-allylic alcohols is reported. Moreover, the first example of hydroxyl-selenenylation of an allylic azide is presented. Yields ranging from moderate to good and diastereomeric ratios up to 95:5 are achieved.
