We study quantum antiferromagnetism on the highly frustrated planar pyrochlore lattice, also known as the square lattice with crossings. The quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on this lattice is of interest as a two-dimensional analogue of the pyrochlore lattice magnet. By combining several approaches we conclude that this system is most likely ordered for all values of spin, S, with a two-fold degenerate valence-bond solid being the ground state for small S. We show next that the Ising antiferromagnet with a weak four-spin exchange, equivalent to square ice with the leading quantum dynamics, exhibits analogous plaquette order. As a byproduct of this analysis we obtain, in the system of weakly coupled ice planes, a sliding phase with XY symmetry; at intermediate couplings, long range “anti-ferroelectric” order is stabilized. 相似文献

The problem of implementing a detector for stop consonants in continuously spoken speech is considered. The problem is posed as one of finding an optimal filter (linear or nonlinear) that operates on a particular appropriately chosen representation, and ideally outputs a 1 when a stop occurs and 0 otherwise. The performance of several variants of a canonical stop detector is discussed and its implications for human and machine speech recognition is considered. 相似文献

We study the effects of magnetoelastic couplings on pyrochlore antiferromagnets. We employ Landau theory, extending an investigation begun by Yamashita and Ueda for the case of S = 1, and classical analyses to argue that such couplings generate bond order via a spin-Peierls transition. This is followed by, or concurrent with, a transition into one of several possible low-temperature Néel phases, with most simply collinear, but also coplanar or mixed spin patterns. In a collinear Néel phase, a dispersionless stringlike magnon mode dominates the resulting excitation spectrum, providing a distinctive signature of the parent geometrically frustrated state. The low-temperature entropy of the spin ice compounds, such as and , is well described by the nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Ising model on the pyrochlore lattice, i.e., by the "ice rules." This is surprising since the dominant coupling between the spins is their long ranged dipole interaction. We show that this phenomenon can be understood rather elegantly: one can construct a model dipole interaction, by adding terms of shorter range, which yields precisely the same ground states, and hence entropy, as the nearest-neighbor interaction. A treatment of the small difference between the model and true dipole interactions reproduces the numerical work by Gingras et al. in detail. We are also led to a more general concept of projective equivalence between interactions. 相似文献

We investigate the interplay of classical degeneracy and quantum dynamics in a range of periodic frustrated transverse field Ising systems at zero temperature. We find that such dynamics can lead to unusual ordered phases and phase transitions or to a quantum spin liquid (cooperative paramagnetic) phase as in the triangular and kagome lattice antiferromagnets, respectively. For the latter, we further predict passage to a bond-ordered phase followed by a critical phase as the field is tilted. These systems also provide exact realizations of quantum dimer models introduced in studies of high temperature superconductivity. 相似文献

In this paper we report on a new method of solving a previous derived, two-dimensional model, integral equation for basilar membrane (BM) motion. The method uses a recursive algorithm for the solution of an initial-value problem in the time domain, combined with a fast Fourier transform (FFT) convolution in the space domain at each time step. Thus, the method capitalizes on the high speed and accuracy of the FFT yet allows the BM to have nonlinear mechanical properties. Using the new method we compute (linear) solutions for various choices of model parameters and compare the results to the experimental measurements of Rhode. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 49, 1218-1231 (1971)]. We also demonstrate the effect of including longitudinal stiffness along the BM and conclude that it is useful in matching the high-frequency slope as measured by Rhode. 相似文献

Motivated by the quantum adiabatic algorithm (QAA), we consider the scaling of the Hamiltonian gap at quantum first-order transitions, generally expected to be exponentially small in the size of the system. However, we show that a quantum antiferromagnetic Ising chain in a staggered field can exhibit a first-order transition with only an algebraically small gap. In addition, we construct a simple classical translationally invariant one-dimensional Hamiltonian containing nearest-neighbor interactions only, which exhibits an exponential gap at a thermodynamic quantum first-order transition of essentially topological origin. This establishes that (i)?the QAA can be successful even across first-order transitions but also that (ii)?it can fail on exceedingly simple problems readily solved by inspection, or by classical annealing. 相似文献

Summary. Upon condensation with 4-isothiocyanato-4-methyl-2-pentanone, 2,3-diaminonaphthalene and N-aminoethyladenosine gave in good
yields substituted pyrimidonaphthoimidazole and imidazopyrimidine thione. Refluxing pyrimidobenzthiazole with methanol H2SO4 at pH∼1 resulted in S-methyl pyrimidobenzthiazole in moderate yield. Pyrimidobenzimidazole derivatives could be reacted to S-alkylated
and N-acylated derivatives by refluxing with ethyl bromoacetate in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate in THF and by heating in an acetic acid/acetic anhydride mixture. Heating of pyrimidobenzimidazole with 75% aqueous H2SO4 on a water bath ended up in a rearranged product. All compounds gave correct 1H NMR, IR, and HR mass spectra. Results of antiinflammatory, analgesic, and anticancer activity screening of the new compounds
are described.
