We prove that finite quotients of the multiplicative group of a finite dimensional division algebra are solvable. Let be a finite dimensional division algebra having center , and let be a normal subgroup of finite index. Suppose is not solvable. Then we may assume that is a minimal nonsolvable group (MNS group for short), i.e. a nonsolvable group all of whose proper quotients are solvable. Our proof now has two main ingredients. One ingredient is to show that the commuting graph of a finite MNS group satisfies a certain property which we denote Property . This property includes the requirement that the diameter of the commuting graph should be , but is, in fact, stronger. Another ingredient is to show that if the commuting graph of has Property , then is open with respect to a nontrivial height one valuation of (assuming without loss of generality, as we may, that is finitely generated). After establishing the openness of (when is an MNS group) we apply the Nonexistence Theorem whose proof uses induction on the transcendence degree of over its prime subfield to eliminate as a possible quotient of , thereby obtaining a contradiction and proving our main result.

We formulate the theory describing the evolution and interactions between optical spatial solitons that propagate in opposite directions. We present the experimental observation of a spatial vector soliton formed by counterpropagation of coherent optical fields. This is to our knowledge the first observation of a vector soliton in which the induced waveguide (potential) is periodic in the propagation direction. We explore how atoms and polar molecules can be manipulated using
evanescent-wave mirrors (EWM). We review the simpler case
of ultracold atoms incident on EWM, and show that quantum effects
such as tunneling, above barrier reflection, and Casimir retardation
corrections, can be probed. We show that it is possible to
enhance significantly quantum effects by engineering
sharp features in the effective atom-EWM potential.
We illustrate the concept with a bichromatic EWM created
by using red and blue detuned lasers. Finally, we extend the
treatment to ultracold diatomic polar molecules. Quantum
reflection and molecular state selection are
demonstrated under attainable physical conditions. By facilitating the
manipulation and trapping of ultracold molecules, such molecular
mirrors could have several applications, e.g., as devices to filter
and select state for ultracold chemistry, or to manipulate states for

Solitons in nonlinear media with an infinite range of nonlocality: first observation of coherent elliptic solitons and of vortex-ring solitons 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We present an experimental study on wave propagation in highly nonlocal optically nonlinear media, for which far-away boundary conditions significantly affect the evolution of localized beams. As an example, we set the boundary conditions to be anisotropic and demonstrate the first experimental observation of coherent elliptic solitons. Furthermore, exploiting the natural ability of such nonlinearities to eliminate azimuthal instabilities, we perform the first observation of stable vortex-ring solitons. These features of highly nonlocal nonlinearities affected by far-away boundary conditions open new directions in nonlinear science by facilitating remote control over soliton propagation. 相似文献
