Optogalvanic spectra of calcium in the 6090–6760 Å region

Optogalvanic spectra of some 30 transitions of calcium originating from the ground state as well as from several excited states (4s4p ^1,3P, 4s3d ^1,3D, 4s5p ³P, 3d4p ³D, ³F) have been investigated using laser-irradiation of a low-current glow discharge in a thermionic diode. The influence of various experimental parameters such as bias field, oven temperature and buffer gas pressure on the spectra are reported. Seven previously unreported transitions are recorded including four forbidden transitions which violate the J selection rules. An interesting anomaly observed in the non-statistical population of the 4s3d ³D_3,2,1 multiplet is discussed where the populations of ³D₃:³D₂:³D₁ are in the ratio of 94:5:1. A possible explanation is based on avoided crossing between potential energy curves of the Ca-Ar molecule.     

Extraction and separation of (137)cs and (86)rb by means of 4-t-butyl-2(alpha-methylbenzyl)phenol

The extraction of caesium-137 and rubidium-86 by a solution of 4-t-butyl-2(alpha-methylbenzyl)phenol in n-octane and tetrachloromethane has been investigated. The separation of rubidium and caesium has been performed by the Craig method and by reversedphase extraction chromatography.     

BISPHENYLENECOSAN as highly selective Cs+ extraction agent

A new reagent for the highly selective extraction of cesium (e-1,7–2,2)4,8–8,4-(bis--o-phenylene)bisdicarbollidocobalt(1–)ate, [(C₂B₉H₉)₂(C₆H₄)₂Co]^–, abbreviated as BISPHECOSAN is described in this paper. The choice of organic solvent and solubilizer, dependence of distribution ratio of Cs⁺ on acidity and other parameters are studied. The extraction mechanism based on selective binding of Cs⁺ cation between two phenylene rings is presented and factors influencing the chemical stability of the reagent are determined.     

Extraction of cesium and barium by dicarbollide and polyethylene glycol in the presence of alkylammonium cations

The extraction of cesium and barium cations into nitrobenzene and 60% (vol.%) nitrobenzene +40% CCl₄ mixture in the presence of dicarbollide (+Slovafol 909), and primary alkylammonium cations has been studied. Extraction constants determined for three methylammonium cations correlate well with their hydration enthalpies. Reverse order of the hydrophobicity of methylammonium cations (competition with bare Cs⁺ ion) and of their tendency to enter the polyethylene glycol complex (competition with polyethylene glycol complexed Cs⁺ and Ba²⁺ ions) is recorded. The possibility of the regeneration of the organic phase after stripping of Cs⁺ and Ba²⁺ ions with methylammonium cations has been investigated.     

Individual extraction constants of some dicarbollylcobaltate anions in the water-nitrobenzene system

Individual extraction constants of nine dicarbollylcobaltate anions in the two-phase water-nitrobenzene system were determined radiometrically assuming that the changes of Gibbs energy of the transfer of the tetraphenylarsonium cation, Ph₄As⁺, and of the tetraphenylborate anion, BPh ₄ ^– , from the aqueous into the nitrobenzene phase are equal. The constants obtained by this method were correlated with Hansch's constants of hydrophobity.     

Group VI metal aminoborylene complex-catalyzed demercuration reactions of bis(alkynyl)mercurials

The first catalytic application of the Group VI metal borylene complexes [(CO)(5)M[double bond]BN(SiMe(3))(2)] involves the demercuration reaction of bis(alkynyl)mercurials, [Hg(C[triple bond]CR)(2)], with formation of a series of buta-1,3-diynes.

Dr. Miroslav Kyrš, DrSc. passed away prematurely and unexpectedly in August 2006 at age of 75. He was a leading person of the Czech radiochemistry during the second half of the 20th century and his results have of world-wide impact. His diligence, intelligence and permanent activity led him to be at first a laboratory chief and subsequently for about 25 years to be a chief of the Radiochemical Department of Czech Nuclear Research Institute (NRI) at Řež near Prague.     

Radiometric determination of strontium with EDTA and solvent extraction

A radiometric determination of Sr was elaborated on the basis of the principle of concentration-dependent distribution using an insufficient amount of EDTA. The uncomplexed Sr is extracted into nitrobenzene in the presence of lithium dipicrylaminate. Amounts of ∼1 μg Sr can be determined with an error of ∼4%. The method can be also used for the determination of Ca. Formulas for the calculation of theoretical calibration curves have been derived and successfully verified.     

Adsorption of Cu2+ from aqueous solution onto iron oxide coated eggshell powder: Evaluation of equilibrium,isotherms, kinetics,and regeneration capacity

This study explored the adsorption behavior of Cu²⁺ onto iron oxide coated eggshell powder (IOESP) from aqueous solution. The effect of various operational parameters such as pH, contact time, initial adsorbate concentration, surfactant, and temperature on adsorption of Cu²⁺ ions was investigated using batch adsorption experiments. The optimum pH for Cu²⁺ adsorption was found to be 6.0. Kinetics of adsorption was found to follow the pseudo-second-order rate equation. The suitability of Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models to the equilibrium data was investigated. The adsorption was well described by the Freundlich isotherm model indicating the presence of heterogeneous sites for Cu²⁺ adsorption. The adsorption of Cu²⁺ was increased in the presence of anionic surfactant (SDS) while cationic surfactant (CTAB) shows no significant change in adsorption capacity. Thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption of Cu²⁺ onto IOESP was feasible, spontaneous, and exothermic. Regeneration studies were performed using HCl, HCOOH, EDTA, and NaOH as eluting agent for Cu²⁺ desorption from saturated IOESP and the maximum regeneration was observed with HCl.
