The effect of dissipation on coherent quantum tunnelling in a double-well system: Two-level model using an adjoint equation approach

We examine the effect of dissipation on coherent quantum tunnelling between the two lowest levels of a double-well system using an adjoint equation approach developed previously in the treatment of quantum-optical problems. Dissipation is modelled by a linear coupling to a bath of harmonic oscillators. The high frequency portion of the bath is adiabatically eliminated using a cumulant expansion technique, which generates frequency renormalisation terms. Making a low temperature assumption, an approximate two-level model is developed in the form of three coupled stochastic differential equations. With a decorrelation approximation, the two-level equations can be solved to yield familiar results. However, the adjoint equation also permits the use of direct stochastic simulation as a means of solution, and simulations are carried out for a range of parameters. A comparison with the decorrelation approximation is made.     

Unconditional two-mode squeezing of separated atomic ensembles

We propose schemes for the unconditional preparation of a two-mode squeezed state of effective bosonic modes realized in a pair of atomic ensembles interacting collectively with optical cavity and laser fields. The scheme uses Raman transitions between stable atomic ground states and under ideal conditions produces pure entangled states in the steady state. The scheme works both for ensembles confined within a single cavity and for ensembles confined in separate, cascaded cavities.     

Dynamical quantum phase transitions in the dissipative Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model with proposed realization in optical cavity QED

We present an optical cavity QED configuration that is described by a dissipative version of the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model of an infinitely coordinated spin system. This open quantum system exhibits both first- and second-order nonequilibrium quantum phase transitions as a single, effective field parameter is varied. Light emitted from the cavity offers measurable signatures of the critical behavior, including that of the spin-spin entanglement.     

The role of nitric oxide in cancer improved methods for measurement of nitrite and nitrate by high-performance ion chromatography

The short lifetime of nitric oxide (NO) in vivo impedes its quantitation directly; however, the determination of nitrite and nitrate ions as the end-products of NO oxidation has proven a more practical approach. High-performance ion chromatographic analysis of nitrite in biological fluids is hampered by the large amount of chloride ion (up to 100mmol/l) which results in insufficient peak resolution when utilizing conductimetric detection. Analysis of both anions in small sample volumes is also constrained by the need to minimise sample handling to avoid contamination by environmental nitrate. We report a means to remove Cl⁻ ions from small sample volumes using Ag⁺ resin which facilitates quantitation of either nitrite and nitrate anions in biological samples, using silica or polymer based ion-exchange resins with conductimetric or electrochemical and spectrophotometric detection. Including a reversed-phase guard column before the anion-exchange guard and analytical column also greatly extends column lifetime.     

The crystal structure of 5-(2-nitrophenylmethylene)-2-thioxothiazolidin-4-one-3-(α-benzyl)ethanoic acid: Preference for the Z-configuration

X-ray crystal structure analysis of the title compound shows that it has the Z-configuration at the exocyclic double bond. Steric hindrance within the molecule is responsible for a considerable deviation from planarity in some regions of the molecule. The relationship of this compound to the structural pattern shown by other thiazolidin-4-one derivatives is briefly discussed.     

Catalytic, asymmetric synthesis of α-acetoxy amides

Non-racemic cyanohydrin acetates are readily available from aldehydes and potassium cyanide/acetic anhydride by use of bimetallic titanium (salen) catalyst 1. Treatment of the cyanohydrin acetates with a platinum(II) phosphinito catalyst 3 under neutral conditions results in chemoselective hydrolysis to the corresponding α-acetoxy amides in a racemization free process.
