Sur Les Groupes D’Homotopie Des Espaces Dont La Cohomologie Modulo 2 Est Nilpotente

The main object of this note is to prove the following generalisation of a theorem of Serre. A simply connected space of finite type whose mod. 2 cohomology is nilpotent (and non-trivial) has infinitely many homotopy groups which are not of odd torsion. Incidentally we show that for every fibrationF( _→ ^ί )E ( _→ ^p )B, satisfying certain mild conditions, the following holds. If a classx in the mod. 2 cohomology ofE belongs to the kernel ofi*, then some power ofx belongs to the ideal generated by the image underp* of the mod. 2 reduced cohomology ofB.      

Solving a class of multiplicative programming problems via c-programming

In this note we show that many classes of global optimization problems can be treated most satisfactorily by classical optimization theory and conventional algorithms. We focus on the class of problems involving the minimization of the product of several convex functions on a convex set which was studied recently by Kunoet al. [3]. It is shown that these problems are typical composite concave programming problems and thus can be handled elegantly by c-programming [4]–[8] and its techniques.     

Nitrogen bridgehead compounds. Part 70. Studies on quinolizine derivatives. Part 4. Ultraviolet-visible spectra and chemical properties of some quinolizine derivatives and their monocyclic tautomers

Ultraviolet-visible spectra of 4-oxo 1 and 4-imino 2 quinolizines or their monocyclic tautomers 3, 4 have been studied in neutral, acidic and basic ethanolic solution as well as in dimethyl sulfoxide and chloroform. Ring B of 4-oxo and 6-unsubstituted 4-imino compounds can be cleaved by sodium ethanolate more or less easily. Ring B of 6-methyl-4-iminoquinolizines is very unstable and they are present mainly in the monocyclic form which are partly dissociated in ethanol and dimethyl sulfoxide especially in higher dilution or in the presence of sodium ethanolate. In dilute acidic ethanol or chloroform, the dissociation is suppressed and in the latter solvent and in some cases, absorption bands can be observed due to a small amount of the 4-imino-6-methylquinolizines. In acidic solution of compounds 3B=C, 3D, 4E, 4F=G having simultaneously cyano and ethoxycarbonyl groups in 1 and 3 position, not simple reprotonation occurs but irreversible changes can be observed.

Policies for biodefense revisited: The prioritized vaccination process for smallpox

Handling bioterror events that involve contagious agents is a major concern for authorities and a cause for debate among policymakers about the best response policy. At the core of this debate stands the question which of the two post-event policies to adopt: mass vaccination or trace (also called ring or targeted) vaccination. We present a new dynamic epidemic-intervention model that captures key features of the situation and generalizes some previous assumptions regarding the probability distributions of inter-temporal parameters. It is shown that a mixture of mass and trace vaccination policies—the prioritized vaccination policy—is more effective than either of the two aforementioned policies.     

An asymptotic finite element method for improvement of solutions of boundary layer problems

Summary A scheme that uses singular perturbation theory to improve the performance of existing finite element methods is presented. The proposed scheme improves the error bounds of the standard Galerkin finite element scheme by a factor of O(ⁿ⁺¹) (where is the small parameter andn is the order of the asymptotic approximation). Numerical results for linear second order O.D.E.'s are given and are compared with several other schemes.     

A propos de conjectures de Serre et Sullivan

Summary We first give a new proof of a conjecture of J.-P. Serre on the homotopy of finite complexes, which was recently proved by C. McGibbon and J. Neisendorfer. The emphasis is on a property of the mod. 2 homology of certain spaces: their quasi-boundedness as right modules over the Steenrod algebra. This property is preserved when one goes from a simply connected space to its loop space and also when one takes a covering of anH-space. Then we show that this notion of quasi-boundedness simplifies H. Miller's proof of D. Sullivan's conjecture on the contractibility of the space of pointed maps from the classifying space of the groupe /2 into a finite complex.     

Dispersion polymerization of styrene: Effect of surfactant

The influence of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), a steric stabilizer, and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), an electrostatic stabilizer, on the stability of styrene dispersion polymerized systems was studied. It was shown that in stabilization by PVA there was pronounced bridging of the submicron emulsion particles to 10-μ dispersion particles and that the emulsion particles could not be washed off. In SDS stabilization, on the other hand, the emulsion formed was easily washed off because bridging with SDS does not occur. The surface tension of the aqueous phase measured during polymerization showed different characteristics for stable and unstable systems.
