Parity violation at neutron p-wave resonances of238U and232Th and related questions

Parity violation effects have been studied at 40 neutron p-wave resonances of the even-even nuclei²³⁸U and²³²Th. Of these 11 show parity violation effects larger than 2 standard deviations, making parity violation a rather common phenomenon. Parity mixing up to 10% has been found. The root-mean squared matrix elements for parity violation derived from these resonances are M=0.58 (+0.50/-0.25) meV for²³⁸U, respectively 1.39 (+0.35/-0.38) meV for²³²Th.     

Further study of theE/f 1 (1420) meson in central production

We have studied the reactions \(({{\pi ^ + } \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{\pi ^ + } p}} \right. \kern-0em} p})p \to ({{\pi ^ + } \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{\pi ^ + } p}} \right. \kern-0em} p})(K\bar K\pi )p\) where the \(K\bar K\pi \) system is centrally produced, at 85 GeV/c and 300 GeV/c using the CERN Omega spectrometer. A spin-parity analysis of theK _S ⁰ K ^± π ^? system shows the presence of a strongJ ^PC=1⁺⁺ signal which we identify as theE/f ₁ (1420) meson. We also find evidence for the decayE/f ₁(1420)→K _S ⁰ K _S ⁰ π ⁰ which determines theC-parity of this state to be positive. Alternative explanations of the data have been tested and ruled out. Hence we obtain the quantum numbers of theE/f ₁ (1420) to beI ^G(J^PC)=0⁺(1⁺).

Spectra of atomic Rydberg states in strong magnetic fields

Transition frequencies and intensities for exited states of atomic hydrogen in a strong magnetic field are calculated by Fourier transformation of dipole moments computed using classical trajectories. We consider states with n = 30 and L_z = 1 for fields of up to 7 T. Spectra for states labeled as librators and rotators are found to be qualitatively different, especially for the spectral component perpendicular to the field. In addition to the zero-field Kepler line, a new intra-manifold transition is located at low frequency. The frequencies and intensities are found to be sensitive functions of the field strength, and of the particular state of the Coulomb manifold involved.     

Production of f'(1520) in 8.25 GeV/c K−p interactions

We present results for the hypercharge exchange reaction K^?p→f' λ from a high statistics experiment at 8.25 GeV/c using the CERN 2m HBC. The total and differential cross sections have been measured; the polarisation of the Λ hyperon and the f' density matrix elements have been calculated as functions of momentum transfer. We also present detailed information on the relative strength of the natural and unnatural parity exchange contributions to the production mechanism.     

Study of the centrally produced ωρ0 and ωω systems inpp interactions at 300 GeV/c

We have performed a search for vector-vector final states centrally produced in proton proton interactions at 300 GeV/c using the CERN Ω spectrometer. Evidence is found for ωρ⁰ production in the reactionpp→p _f (2π⁺2π^?2π⁰)p _s and for ωω production in the reactionpp→p _f (2π⁺2π^?2π⁰)p _s . However no evidence is found for ωø production in the reactionpp→p _f (K ⁺ K ^?π⁺π^?π⁰)p _s .     

Relative Completions of Linear Groups Over Coordinate Rings of Curves

We compute the completion of the special linear group over the coordinate ring A of a curve over a number field k relative to its representation in SL _n (A/𝔪), for 𝔪 a maximal ideal.     

Study of the ηπ+π− system centrally producedin the reactionpp→p f (ηπ+π−)p s at 300 GeV/c

The reactionpp→p _f (ηπ⁺π^?)p _s where the ηπ⁺π^? system is centrally produced has been studied at 300 GeV/c incident momentum at the CERN Ω spectrometer. The ηπ^± mass spectrum shows a strong δ/a ₀(980) signal having a mass of 984±4 and Γ=95±14 MeV. The ηπ⁺π^? mass spectrum shows η′ andf ₁(1285) signals over little background. A spin-parity analysis of the ηπ⁺π^? system shows evidence for aJ ^PC =1⁺⁺ peak at thef ₁(1285) mass but no evidence for the pseudoscalar states η(1270) andl/η(1440). No evidence is found for the ηππ decay of theE/f ₁(1420) meson for which we set an upper limit BR(E/f ₁(1420)→ηππ)<0.1 at 95% cl.
