Temperature and velocity measurement of a 3-D thermal flow field using thermo-sensitive liquid crystals

It is an important challenge to analyze a three-dimensional thermal flow field in engineering, science, and agriculture. For such an analysis, it is essential to measure physical quantities such as temperature and velocity over the entire thermal flow field. This paper presents a measurement system based on color image processing for temperature and velocity vector distributions in a three-dimensional thermal flow field. Flow visualization is accomplished by the use of thermo-sensitive liquid crystal tracers. An algorithm for the color-to-temperature transformation using a multi-layer feed-forward neural network is applied to three-dimensional natural convection in a rotating cylindrical cell. Two-dimensional temperature distributions in a slit plane are obtained by using the algorithm. A three-dimensional temperature distribution is consequently constructed by interpolating the two-dimensional distributions using the B-spline function. In addition, the Spatio-Temporal correlation method is applied to the natural convection to obtain a three-dimensional velocity vector distribution.     

Studies on monobactams II. Synthesis and β-lactamase inhibitory activity of 4α-methyl-3-[(thien-2-yl)-methylene]-2-azetidinone-1-sulfonate

Two monobactam derivatives, potassium 4-methyl-(3E)-[(thien-2-yl)methylene]-2-azetidinone-1-sulfonate and its (3Z)-isomer, were prepared and evaluated for their -lactamase inhibitory activities. A stannylene strategy for regioselective acylation and phosphorylation of 1,2-cyclohexylidene-myo-inositol. Its convenient resolution and phosphatidylinositol synthesis

The bis(dibutylstannylene) derivative of 1,2-cyclohexylidene-myo-inositol reacted with (S)-O-acetylmandeloyl chloride and diphosphate tetraesters to give 3,6-dimandelate and 3-phosphate, respectively. Using the stannylene methodology for the optical resolution and regioselective phosphorylation of the ketal, a concise synthesis of phosphatidylinositol with the natural configuration was accomplished.     

Synthesis and toxicity assay of ceramic nanophosphors for bioimaging with near-infrared excitation

Yttrium hydroxyl carbonate (Y(OH)CO₃) precursors were synthesized by the homogeneous co-precipitation method in the presence of polyacrylic acid (PAAc). Resultant precursor particle size is about 15–20 nm with narrow size distribution whereas the particle size is smaller than those acquired by the conventional homogeneous precipitation method. Effective decrease of Y(OH)CO₃ particle size was found to be higher for the presence of weak polyanionic ionomer such as PAAc than the presence of strong polyanionic ionomer such as sodium polystyrene sulfonate (PSS). It was observed that the morphology and size of the precursors are almost unchanged after the calcination process. Er³⁺ doped Y₂O₃ nanoparticles were synthesized by PAAc assisted homogeneous co-precipitation method showed bright green (550 nm) and red (660 nm) upconversion (UC) as well as near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence (1550 nm) under 980-nm excitation. UC and NIR fluorescence bioimaging and in-vitro cytotoxicity assay of Er³⁺ doped Y₂O₃ nanoparticles were successfully attempted with commercially available macrophages and B-cell hybridomas. Cellular uptake of nanoparticles is evidenced from bright field, UC and NIR fluorescence images of macrophages.     

Measurement of Cu K-shell and Ag L-shell ionization cross sections by low-energy positron impact

Inner shell ionization cross sections by low-energy positron impact have been measured. Development of an x-ray detector with thin Si(Li) crystals has enabled the first measurements of the absolute cross sections for the positron impacts in the energy range below 30 keV. Threshold behavior of the measured cross sections for the Cu K shell and Ag L shell are compared with the theoretical results of Gryzinski and Kowalski [Phys. Lett. A 183, 196 (1993)]] and Khare and Wadehra [Can. J. Phys. 74, 376 (1996)]]. Good agreement has been found for the Cu K shell, while the experimental values for the Ag L shell were found to be smaller than the corresponding theoretical results.     

Dynamic nuclear polarization studies of nitroxyl spin probes in agarose gel using Overhauser‐enhanced magnetic resonance imaging

Agarose is a tissue‐equivalent material and its imaging characteristics similar to those of real tissues. Hence, the dynamic nuclear polarization studies of 3‐carboxy‐2,2,5,5‐tetramethyl‐pyrrolidine‐1‐oxyl (carboxy‐PROXYL) in agarose gel were carried out. The dynamic nuclear polarization parameters such as spin lattice relaxation time, longitudinal relaxivity, leakage factor, saturation parameter and coupling parameter were estimated for 2 mM carboxy‐PROXYL in phosphate‐buffered saline solution and water/agarose mixture (99 : 1). From these results, the spin probe concentration was optimized as 2 mM, and the reduction in enhancement was observed for carboxy‐PROXYL in water/agarose mixture (99 : 1) compared with phosphate‐buffered saline solution. Phantom imaging was also performed with 2 mM concentration of carboxy‐PROXYL in various concentrations of agarose gel at various radio frequency power levels. The results from the dynamic nuclear polarization measurements agree well with the phantom imaging results. These results pave the way for designing model system for human tissues suited to the biological applications of electron spin resonance/Overhauser‐enhanced magnetic resonance imaging.     

Effect of refraction index and thickness of the light guide in the position-sensitive gamma-ray detector using compact PS-PMTs

We constructed a position-sensitive gamma-ray detector consisting of an array of BGO scintillators, a light guide and compact PS-PMTs. The effects of refractive index and thickness of the light guide of a glass plate on the detector performance were investigated. A light guide with higher refractive index and smaller thickness is found better for a good spatial resolution.     

Li-intercalation into hexagonal boron nitride

A Li hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) intercalation compound (Li-hBNIC) was successfully synthesized by the annealing of powder or bulk hBN and Li at 1523 K. By an XRD analysis, a strong peak indicating the expansion of BN interlayer distance due to Li-intercalation was observed at an angle lower than that of hBN (0 0 2). In the sample, the interlayer distance and its expansion ratio were 3.76 Å and 12.6%, respectively, and these values were similar to those of a first stage Li-graphite intercalation compound (Li-GIC), LiC₆. The electrical conductivity of the sample was increased by several orders of magnitude, from 10⁻¹⁵ to 10⁻⁷ Ω⁻¹ cm⁻¹ at room temperature. Li de-intercalation was confirmed by the dispersion of the sample in purified water.
