Increasingly stringent regulations and the need to tackle rising fuel prices have placed great emphasis on the design of aeronautical gas turbines, which are unfortunately more and more prone to combustion instabilities. In the particular field of annular combustion chambers, these instabilities often take the form of azimuthal modes. To predict these modes, one must compute the full combustion chamber, which remained out of reach until very recently and the development of massively parallel computers. In this article, full annular Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of two helicopter combustors, which differ only on the swirlers' design, are performed. In both computations, LES captures self-established rotating azimuthal modes. However, the two cases exhibit different thermo-acoustic responses and the resulting limit-cycles are different. With the first design, a self-excited strong instability develops, leading to pulsating flames and local flashback. In the second case, the flames are much less affected by the azimuthal mode and remain stable, allowing an acceptable operation. Hence, this study highlights the potential of LES for discriminating injection system designs. To cite this article: P. Wolf et al., C. R. Mecanique 337 (2009).  相似文献

Efficient numerical tools taking advantage of the ever increasing power of high-performance computers, become key elements in the fields of energy supply and transportation, not only from a purely scientific point of view, but also at the design stage in industry. Indeed, flow phenomena that occur in or around the industrial applications such as gas turbines or aircraft are still not mastered. In fact, most Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) predictions produced today focus on reduced or simplified versions of the real systems and are usually solved with a steady state assumption. This article shows how recent developments of CFD codes and parallel computer architectures can help overcoming this barrier. With this new environment, new scientific and technological challenges can be addressed provided that thousands of computing cores are efficiently used in parallel. Strategies of modern flow solvers are discussed with particular emphases on mesh-partitioning, load balancing and communication. These concepts are used in two CFD codes developed by CERFACS: a multi-block structured code dedicated to aircrafts and turbo-machinery as well as an unstructured code for gas turbine flow predictions. Leading edge computations obtained with these high-end massively parallel CFD codes are illustrated and discussed in the context of aircrafts, turbo-machinery and gas turbine applications. Finally, future developments of CFD and high-end computers are proposed to provide leading edge tools and end applications with strong industrial implications at the design stage of the next generation of aircraft and gas turbines.  相似文献

Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) has become a potent tool to investigate instabilities in swirl flows even for complex, industrial geometries. However, the accurate prediction of pressure losses on these complex flows remains difficult. The paper identifies localised near-wall resolution issues as an important factor to improve accuracy and proposes a solution with an adaptive mesh h-refinement strategy relying on the tetrahedral fully automatic MMG3D library of Dapogny et al. (J. Comput. Phys. 262, 358-378, 2014) using a novel sensor based on the dissipation of kinetic energy. Using a joint experimental and numerical LES study, the methodology is first validated on a simple diaphragm flow before to be applied on a swirler with two counter-rotating passages. The results demonstrate that the new sensor and adaptation approach can effectively produce the desired local mesh refinement to match the target losses, measured experimentally. Results shows that the accuracy of pressure losses prediction is mainly controlled by the mesh quality and density in the swirler passages. The refinement also improves the computed velocity and turbulence profiles at the swirler outlet, compared to PIV results. The significant improvement of results confirms that the sensor is able to identify the relevant physics of turbulent flows that is essential for the overall accuracy of LES. Finally, in the appendix, an additional comparison of the sensor fields on tetrahedral and hexahedral meshes demonstrates that the methodology is broadly applicable to all mesh types.  相似文献

A series of anthraquinone (C(14)O(2)H(8)) derivatives has been studied by means of electron capture negative ion mass spectrometry (ECNI-MS), photoelectron spectroscopy (PES), and AM1 quantum chemical calculations. Mean lifetimes of molecular negative ions M(-.) (MNI) have been measured. The mechanism of long-lived MNI formation in the epithermal energy region of incident electrons has been investigated. A simple model of a molecule (a spherical potential well with the repulsive centrifugal term) has been applied for the analysis of the energy dependence of cross sections at the first stage of the electron capture process. It has been shown that a temporary resonance of MNI at the energy approximately 0.5 eV corresponds to a shape resonance with lifetime 1-2.10(-13) s in the f-partial wave (l = 3) of the incident electron. The next resonant state of MNI at the energy approximately 1.7 eV has been associated with the electron excited Feshbach resonance (whose parent state is a triplet npi* transition). In all cases the initial electron state of the MNI relaxes into the ground state by means of a radiationless transition, and the final state of the MNI is a nuclear excited resonance with a lifetime measurable on the mass spectrometry timescale. A stabilized finite element method, to carry out the linear stability analysis of a two‐dimensional base flow to three‐dimensional perturbations that are periodic along span, is presented. The resulting equations for the time evolution of the disturbance requires a solution to the generalized eigenvalue problem. The analysis is global in nature and is also applicable to non‐parallel flows. Equal‐order‐interpolation functions for velocity and pressure are utilized. Stabilization terms are added to the Galerkin formulation to admit the use of equal‐order‐interpolation functions and to eliminate node‐to‐node oscillations that might arise in advection‐dominated flows. The proposed formulation is tested on two flow problems. First, the mode transitions in the circular Couette flow are investigated. Two scenarios are considered. In the first one, the outer cylinder is at rest, while the inner one spins. Two linearly unstable modes are identified. The primary mode is real and represents the axisymmetric Taylor vortices. The second mode is complex and consists of spiral vortices. For the counter‐rotating cylinders, the primary transition is via the appearance of spiral vortices. Excellent agreement with results from earlier studies is observed. The formulation is also utilized to investigate the parallel and oblique modes of vortex shedding past a cylinder for the Re = 100 flow. It is found that the flow is associated with a large number of unstable oblique shedding modes. The parallel mode of vortex shedding is a special case of this family of modes and is associated with the largest growth rate. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

High-fidelity numerical simulations are used to study flame root stabilization mechanisms of cryogenic flames, where both reactants (O2 and CH4) are injected in transcritical conditions in the geometry of the laboratory scale test rig Mascotte operated by ONERA (France). Simulations provide a detailed insight into flame root stabilization mechanisms for these diffusion flames: they show that the large wall heat losses at the lips of the coaxial injector are of primary importance, and require to solve for the fully coupled conjugate heat transfer problem. In order to account for flame–wall interaction (FWI) at the injector lip, detailed chemistry effects are also prevalent and a detailed kinetic mechanism for CH4 oxycombustion at high pressure is derived and validated. This kinetic scheme is used in a real-gas fluid solver, coupled with a solid thermal solver in the splitter plate to calculate the unsteady temperature field in the lip. A simulation with adiabatic boundary conditions, an hypothesis that is often used in real-gas combustion, is also performed for comparison. It is found that adiabatic walls simulations lead to enhanced cryogenic reactants vaporization and mixing, and to a quasi-steady flame, which anchors within the oxidizer stream. On the other hand, FWI simulations produce self-sustained oscillations of both lip temperature and flame root location at similar frequencies: the flame root moves from the CH4 to the O2 streams at approximately 450 Hz, affecting the whole flame structure.  相似文献

Great prominence is put on the design of aeronautical gas turbines due to increasingly stringent regulations and the need to tackle rising fuel prices. This drive towards innovation has resulted sometimes in new concepts being prone to combustion instabilities. In the particular field of annular combustion chambers, these instabilities often take the form of azimuthal modes. To predict these modes, one must compute the full combustion chamber, which remained out of reach until very recently and the development of massively parallel computers. Since one of the most limiting factors in performing Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of real combustors is estimating the adequate grid, the effects of mesh resolution are investigated by computing full annular LES of a realistic helicopter combustion chamber on three grids, respectively made of 38, 93 and 336 million elements. Results are compared in terms of mean and fluctuating fields. LES captures self-established azimuthal modes. The presence and structure of the modes is discussed. This study therefore highlights the potential of LES for studying combustion instabilities in annular gas turbine combustors.  相似文献

Nonlinear oscillator models are constructed to treat the bistability in situations involving elementary excitations in solids. Such models are shown to be useful not only in describing single photon but also multiphoton bistability. The resulting bistability both with and without cavity is considered. The two-photon excitonic bistability in CuCl is in detail. The effect of local field corrections can also be incorporated, in a simple manner, in such models.  相似文献
