This paper describes the mechanism generating the beautiful wing colors of various male butterflies and the relationship between the wing material and the color appearance. The microstructure of the scales covering the upper surface of the wings was analyzed with the aid of a scanning electron microscope. The basic mechanism of color generation of structurally colored scales is determined for the first time in accordance with the theory of optical interference in thin film layers using a model of wing scales. Optical properties were found in relation to the three-dimensional spectral reflectance of the samples, and differences were observed between the brightness perceived in subjective evaluations and calculated values based on the reflective spectra of the structurally colored wings. The results of this study suggest that the microroughness of the upper wing surface may influence the perceived gloss of structurally colored wings. 相似文献

We examined effects of contrast and character size upon legibility of Japanese text stimuli presented on visual display terminal
(VDT). In the experiment, three different character sizes were employed and the text stimulus was presented under a variety
of conditions where contrast between the text and the background changed. Reading speed and the rate of readable characters
were measured. Subjective rating for legibility was also evaluated. Results showed that legibility increases with luminance
contrast for all character sizes examined here. A strong correlation was found between the subjective rating index and reading

Active control of methanol carbonylation selectivity over Au/carbon anode by electrochemical potential 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Electrochemical oxidative carbonylation of methanol was studied over Au supported carbon anode in CO. The major carbonylation products were dimethyl oxalate (DMO) and dimethyl carbonate (DMC). The minor oxidation products were dimethoxy methane (DMM) and methyl formate (MF) from methanol and CO(2). Influences of various reaction conditions were studied on carbonylation activities and selectivities. The selectivities to DMO and DMC can be controlled by the electrochemical potential. Electrocatalysis of Au/carbon anode was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV), stoichiometric reactions among Au(3+), methanol, and CO, and UV-vis spectra. The Au/carbon anode was characterized by XRD, SEM, and BE images before and after the carbonylation. These experimental facts strongly suggest that transition of oxidation states of Au affects changing of the carbonylation selectivities to DMO and DMC. Au(0) is the active species for the selective DMO formation by direct electrochemical carbonylation at low potentials (<+1.2 V (Ag/AgCl)). On the other hand, Au(3+) is the active spices for the selective DMC formation by indirect electrochemical carbonylation through Au(3+)/Au(+) redox at high potentials (>+1.3 V). 相似文献

Experimental data are presented in this paper on the profiles of local void fraction, bubble impaction rate, bubble velocity and its spectrum, and also bubble length and its spectrum, of mercury-argon two-phase slug flow flowing upwards in a vertical circular tube in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. Decrease in void fraction and increase in bubble velocity are significant when the magnetic flux density is larger than . This effect is discussed by analyzing the bubble size distribution. Recovery of local void fraction profile in the downstream of an obstacle and diffusion of void injected from only one nozzle in the presence of magnetic field are also discussed. 相似文献
