Arithmetic on Groups of Positive Rationals

In this paper we develop a theory of unique factorization for subgroups of the positive rationals. We show that this theory is strong enough to include arithmetic progressions and the theory of genera in algebraic number fields. We establish generalizations of both Dirichlet's theorem on primes in arithmetic progressions and the theory of genera for Abelian extensions of the rationals.

Minimal Bar Tableaux

Motivated by recent results of Stanley, we generalize the rank of a partition λ to the rank of a shifted partition S(λ). We show that the number of bars required in a minimal bar tableau of S(λ) is max(o, e + (ℓ(λ) mod 2)), where o and e are the number of odd and even rows of λ. As a consequence we show that the irreducible projective characters of S_n vanish on certain conjugacy classes. Another corollary is a lower bound on the degree of the terms in the expansion of Schur’s Q_λ symmetric functions in terms of the power sum symmetric functions. Received November 20, 2003

Described is a method of introducing trifluoroalkyl groups at C-6 of lysine. This chemistry has the potential to introduce a variety of functionality at C-6 of lysine.     

Decay of neutron-rich Ga isotopes near N = 50 at PARRNe

The PARRNe facility has been used to produce neutron-rich isotopes ^83,84Gaby the ISOL method. Their decay has been studied, and β-γ coincidence and γ-γ coincidence data were collected as a function of time. The first two excited levels in ⁸³Ge and the first excited level in ⁸⁴Ge have been measured for the first time.     

Impacts of structural-acoustic coupling on the performance of energy density-based active sound transmission control

This paper investigates numerically the performance of the active sound transmission control into a rectangular cavity through a flexible panel under the energy density-based error-sensing algorithm. Full coupling between the sound transmitting panel and the enclosed space is considered. A pure vibration actuator, a pure acoustic source and a combined control source system are used as the secondary control source in the active control and their performances are studied. Formulae for the coupled eigenfrequencies of the cavity and the flexible panel are also derived. The strength of the structural-acoustic coupling, the ratio between the first eigenfrequencies of the cavity and the panel and the difference between the excitation frequency and the coupled eigenfrequencies, especially the latter, are found to have crucial impacts on the performance of the active control regardless the type of control source used.     

A preconditioned domain decomposition algorithm for the solution of the elliptic Neumann problem

A new preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG)-based domain decomposition method is given for the solution of linear equations arising in the finite element method applied to the elliptic Neumann problem. The novelty of the proposed method is in the recommended preconditioner which is constructed by using cyclic matrix. The resulting preconditioned algorithms are well suited to parallel computation.     

An estimate for symmetric square <Emphasis Type="Italic">L</Emphasis>-functions on weight aspect
