Clinical usefulness of a trypsin radioimmunoassay kit

From the clinical use of RIA-gnost trypsin kit, the following results were obtained. 1. Standard curve showed a steep and good curve was shown. 2. Incubation: The condition for the first incubation was set at the room temperature for 10-24 hours and that for the second incubation at the room temperature for 3-5 hours. With these settings, satisfactory results were obtained. 3. Reproducibility and recovery: The C.V. of the reproducibility and the recovery were considered superior, and the values were below 10% and +/- 3%, respectively. 4. Correlation between trypsin and serum elestase-1: An excellent positive correlation (coefficient of correlation r = 0.889) was shown. 5. Serum trypsin concentration of normal and pancreatic diseases: The normal range was from 100 to 500 ng/ml. Acute pancreatitis rose obviously. Diabetes mellitus and chronic pancreatitis was below 500 ng/ml and the pancreatic cancer showed a tendency to scatter in the range of 50-1,250 ng/ml. The above results indicated that serum trypsin can be easily measured with high precision by using this method. Thus the method is considered useful for the diagnosis of pancreatic diseases.     

Structural investigations of polymer liquid-crystalline solutions: Aromatic polyamides,hydroxy propyl cellulose,and poly(γ-benzyl-L-glutamate)

A comparative structural investigation of the characteristics of polymer liquid-crystalline solutions including Kevlar® (PPD-T)/sulfuric acid, poly(Cl-p-phenylene terephthalamide) (Cl-PPD-T)/sulfuric acid, poly(γ-benzyl-L-glutamate) (PγBLG)/dioxane, and hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC)/water was undertaken. Experimental procedures included polarized light microscopy, light scattering, absorption spectra, and x-ray diffraction on solutions at various concentrations and temperatures. Both the two-phase region at the onset of liquid-crystal formation and the wholly anisotropic phase were investigated. Each solution exhibited distinctive characteristics. The PPD-T and Cl-PPD-T solutions were nematic, and the PγBLG and HPC solutions were cholesteric. In the two-phase region the PPD-T, Cl-PPD-T, and PγBLG (but apparently not the HPC) exhibited negatively birefringent spherulites and aggregates of spherulites. The HPC solutions only exhibited spherulitic structures in the single-phase anisotropic system. The structures and orientations in the anisotropic phase for the various polymer solutions is considered. The helicoidal structural characteristics of the PγBLG and HPC solutions are contrasted.     

Dopant-pair structures segregated on a hydrogen-terminated Si(100) surface

Novel atomic structures on a H-terminated Si(100)-(2x1)-H surface were found using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The structures are distinguishable only from Si dimers in empty-state STM images. They were observed on arsenic- and phosphorus-doped substrates, but not on boron-doped substrates. Surface density of these structures was found to be proportional to the dopant density in the substrate. First-principles calculations clarify that they are consisting of dopant pairs that are segregated from the bulk material. Hydrogen atoms attached to the dopant pair are found to flip between two positions on the surface due to a quantum effect.     

Rheo-optical properties of polyethylene films in the nonlinear viscoelastic region

A new apparatus was designed to investigate the dynamic viscoelastic properties of solid polymer materials in the nonlinear viscoelastic region. The apparatus was combined with a birefringence apparatus in such a way that birefringence could be measured simultaneously with stress under oscillatory deformation. The nonlinear viscoelastic behavior of bulk-crystallized high-density polyethylene films was examined. Nonlinearity of mechanical properties became evident around 30°C, while optical properties became markedly nonlinear around 50°C. The nonlinearity of viscoelastic properties changes very little when the films are swollen with tetrachloroethane. It is proposed that disruption of lamellae to crystallites in the drawing process is one of the most important causes of the nonlinear behavior of high-density polyethylene films.     

Application of the cd homoallylic benzoate method as a chiroptical tool for determination of absolute configuration

After the conformation I was clarified to 5α-,10α,-cis-solidagolactones by ¹H NMR measurement with Eu(dpm)₃ and chemical transformations, the CD homoallylic benzoate chirality method was applied to the homoallylic alcohol system of solidagolactone IV ($\text{1a}$) for a chiroptical determination of the absolute configuration. The result agreed with absolute configuration elucidated by x-ray analysis, indicating the usefulness of the cd method.
