Recent measurements of the high-energy charged particle environment with the Radiation Environment Monitor (REM) aboard the Russian Mir space station are presented. Ionizing dose rates in a silicon detector have been measured with two shieldings. The dose is mainly accumulated in two distinct areas, the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) and the region of closest approach to the magnetic poles. Whereas the radiation in the South Atlantic Anomaly varied little during 1995, large changes of the daily absorbed doses in the polar regions are observed. A comparison of REM doses with the NASA AP-8 and AE-8 radiation models revealed major differences. AP-8 tends to underestimate the average REM doses, whereas AE-8 overestimates REM doses, and rather describes the worst case. 相似文献

The mixed micellization between the cationic gemini surfactant [ C12H25( CH3)2N+( C2H4) N+( CH3)2 C12H25•2Br-] and the cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in 150 mM KBr solutions has been investigated. The variation of the
cmc of the mixtures, measured by surface tension experiments, with composition revealed synergism in micelle formation. T-Jump
and light scattering experiments performed in the vicinity of the crossover volume fraction showed the existence of two micellar
populations, possibly linear and toroidal micelles. Rheological and dynamic light scattering experiments allowed to fully
characterize the linear viscoelasticity of the mixtures. These measurements revealed synergistic gains in viscoelastic properties
with a maximum of the stress-relaxation time around the equimolar composition. These effects are ascribed to a progressive
intermicellar crosslinking resulting from a continuous increase of the end-cap energy with the 12-2-12 content in the mixture.

New techniques for evaluating the incendiary behavior of insulators is presented. The onset of incendive brush discharges in air is evaluated using standard spark probe techniques for the case simulating approaches of an electrically grounded sphere to a charged insulator in the presence of a flammable atmosphere. However, this standard technique is unsuitable for the case of brush discharges that may occur during the charging–separation process for two insulator materials. We present experimental techniques to evaluate this hazard in the presence of a flammable atmosphere which is ideally suited to measure the incendiary nature of micro-discharges upon separation, a measurement never before performed. Other measurement techniques unique to this study include: surface potential measurements of insulators before, during and after contact and separation, as well as methods to verify fieldmeter calibrations using a charge insulator surface opposed to standard high voltage plates. 相似文献

Particle removal during lunar exploration activities is of prime importance for the success of robotic and human exploration of the moon. We report on our efforts to use electrostatic and dielectrophoretic forces to develop a dust removal technology that prevents the accumulation of dust on solar panels and removes dust adhering to those surfaces. Testing of several prototypes showed solar shield output above 90% of the initial potentials after dust clearing. 相似文献

The calculation of crystal structure from X-ray diffraction data requires that the phases of the ``structure factors' (Fourier coefficients) determined by scattering be deduced from the absolute values of those structure factors. Motivated by a question of Herbert Hauptman, we consider the problem of determining phases by direct algebraic means in the case of crystal structures with equal atoms in the unit cell, with small. We rephrase the problem as a question about multiplicative invariants for a particular finite group action. We show that the absolute values form a generating set for the field of invariants of this action, and consider the problem of making this theorem constructive and practical; the most promising approach for deriving explicit formulas uses SAGBI bases.

Bound states made from two triplet excitations on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice are investigated. Based on the perturbative unitary transformation by flow equations quantitative properties like dispersions and qualitative properties like symmetries are determined. The high order results [up to (J2/J1)(14)] permit one to fix the parameters of SrCu2(BO3)(2) precisely: J1 = 6.16(10) meV, x J2/J1 = 0.603(3), J( perpendicular) = 1.3(2) meV. At the border of the magnetic Brillouin zone a general double degeneracy is derived. An unexpected instability in the triplet channel at x = 0.63 indicates a transition towards another phase. The possible nature of this phase is discussed. 相似文献

Multiplication of functional units through self‐assembly is a powerful way to new properties and functions. In particular, self‐organization of components decorated with recognition groups leads to multivalent entities, amenable to strong and selective binding with multivalent targets, such as protein receptors. Here we describe an efficient, supramolecular, one‐pot valency multiplication process proceeding through self‐organization of monovalent components into well‐defined, grid‐shaped [2×2] tetranuclear complexes bearing eight sugar residues for multivalent interaction with the tetrameric lectin, concanavalin A (Con A). The grids are stable in water under physiological pH at a relatively high concentration, but dissociate readily at slightly more acidic pH or upon dilution below a certain threshold, in a type of on–off behavior. The carbohydrate‐decorated grids interact strongly and selectively with Con A forming triply supramolecular bio‐hybrid polymeric networks, which lead to a highly specific phase‐separation and quasi‐quantitative precipitation of Con A out of solution. Dramatic effects of valency number on agglutination properties were demonstrated by comparison of grids with divalent carbohydrates of covalent and non‐covalent (L ‐shaped, mononuclear zinc complex) scaffolds. The results presented here provide prototypical illustration of the power of multivalency generation by self‐assembly leading to defined arrays of functional groups and binding patterns. 相似文献
