Reflection of light by a slab containing electrically small dielectric spheres

Theoriginal and theenhanced Maxwell-Garnett estimates for the permittivity of a particulate medium are applied to the reflection of light by a composite dielectric slab. The reflection coefficients for incident s and p polarizations are calculated and some curves are plotted and discussed.     

MS-Express: data-extracting and -processing software for high-throughput experimentation with mass spectrometry

High-throughput experiments (HTE) result in large amounts of raw data that have to be evaluated for sample classification. Especially mass spectrometry, a widely used detection method in catalytic HTE applications, produces enormous amounts of data. In the past few years, in catalysts research, several test rigs based on mass spectrometric detection have been independently reported by different groups. In a typical HTE, the catalysts are tested sequentially; the recording of the scans, however, occurs continuously. For this reason, the scans of interest have to be extracted from the raw data, and scans belonging to the same sample have to be averaged in a tedious procedure before further processing. In this publication, we present our custom-designed software MS-Express (mass spectrometry data-extracting and -processing software), an efficient tool for HTE MS data evaluation. MS-Express not only sorts the data, it also establishes statistical significance with the help of reference and blank data and provides concise information about abundance and intensity distributions of expected peaks. A special feature is that the program also reports unexpected MS signals, which potentially lead to unexpected discoveries.

The first total synthesis of the (±)-17-methyl-trans-4,5-methyleneoctadecanoic acid and related analogs with antileishmanial activity

The first total synthesis of the marine cyclopropane fatty acid (±)-17-methyl-trans-4,5-methyleneoctadecanoic acid was accomplished in eight steps and in 9.1% overall yield starting from 1-bromo-12-methyltridecane. The cis analog (±)-17-methyl-cis-4,5-methyleneoctadecanoic acid was also synthesized but in seven steps and in 16.4% overall yield. With the two isomeric cyclopropane fatty acids at hand it was possible to unequivocally corroborate the trans relative configuration of the naturally occurring fatty acid by gas chromatographic co-elution of the corresponding methyl esters. The cis isomer was cytotoxic to Leishmania donovani promastigotes with an IC₅₀ of 300.2 ± 4.2 μM.     

Self-imaging by a volume grating

The self-image phenomenon by a volume grating is proposed and theoretically analyzed. A theoretical model based on a path integral formulation to describe wave propagation through the grating inhomogeneous medium is applied. A modified version of the scalar diffraction theory Fresnel propagator is obtained which allows calculating the diffracted field amplitude by the grating. The proposed model is applied to amplitude and/or phase volume gratings. Remarkable features appear, in particular at the fractional Talbot distance 0.125z_T. In this case, if an in-phase real and imaginary grating modulation is considered a self-image intensity profile is observed for determined values of the absorptive and refractive parameters. On the other hand, a spatial comb intensity profile for a near half period shift between the real and imaginary grating modulations is found.     

Slope detection method by modulated speckle patterns

An optical technique for slope detection by using as storing medium a photorefractive BSO crystal is proposed. The technique relays in that a local tilt produced in a diffusing reflective surface can be mapped as a speckle transversal shifting in a plane perpendicular to the optical axis. The volume nature of the storing medium is quite adequate to highlight the speckle volume nature and its associated properties. Experimental results obtained by using a rubber vibrating membrane are presented.     

Cloning, Sequencing, and Identification Using Proteomic Tools of a Protease from Bromelia hieronymi Mez

Fruits of Bromelia hieronymi, a tropical South American plant, possess a high content of peptidases with potential biotechnological uses. Total RNA was extracted from unripe fruits and peptidase cDNA was obtained by 3'RACE-PCR. The consensus sequence of the cysteine peptidase cDNA contained 875 bp, the 690 first ones codifying for a hypothetical polypeptide chain of the mature peptidase, named Bh-CP1 (molecular mass 24.773 kDa, pI 8.6, extinction molar coefficient 58,705 M(-1) cm(-1)). Bh-CP1 sequence shows a high percentage of identity with those of other cysteine plant proteases. The presence of highly preserved residues is observed, like those forming the catalytic site (Gln19, Cys25, His159, and Asn175, papain numbering), as well as other six Cys residues, involved in the formation of disulfide bounds. Molecular modeling results suggest the enzyme belongs to the α?+?β class of proteins, with two disulfide bridges (Cys23-Cys63 and Cys57-Cys96) in the α domain, while the β domain is stabilized by another disulfide bridge (Cys153-Cys203). Additionally, peptide mass fingerprints (PMFs) of the three peptidases previously isolated from B. hieronymi fruits (namely hieronymain I, II, and III) were performed and compared with the theoretical fingerprint of PMF of Bh-CP1, showing a partial matching between the in silico-translated protein and hieronymain II.
