Cyclic Extension of an Elastic Fibre with an Elastic-plastic Coating

A circular cylindrical elastic fibre has a concentric coatingof elastic-plastic material which obeys Tresca's yield conditionand associated flow rule. Theoretical solutions are given forthe uniform extension of the composite cylinder; both infinitesimaland finite extensions are considered. The unloading and subsequentreloading of the cylinder are also analysed. The problem isof interest in connection with the mechanics of fibre-reinforcedmetals. Numerical results are given for an aluminium-silicasystem. Good qualitative agreement with experiment is obtained.     

Axially Symmetric Deformations of Fibre-reinforced Cylinders

General solutions are obtained for boundary-value problems givingaxially symmetric deformations of "ideal" fibre-reinforced cylinders.The cylinders are hollow, thick-walled and elastic, and arecontinuously reinforced throughout by two families of helicalfibres making an angle ±ø with the axis of symmetry.We consider traction boundary-value problems and in particularobtain two fundamental solutions corresponding to axial andradial concentrated loadings. The theory is applied to the problemof inflation of the cylinder under uniform internal pressure.
