Measurement of storage time, estimation of ion number and study of absorption line profile in a Paul trap

Europium (Eu⁺) ions were confined in a Paul trap and detected by non-destructive method. Storage time of Eu⁺ ions achieved in vacuum was improved by orders of magnitude employing buffer gas cooling. The experimentally detected signal was fitted to the ion response signal and the total number of ions trapped was estimated. It is found that the peak signal amplitude as well as the product of FWHM and the peak signal amplitude is proportional to the total number of trapped ions. The trapped ion secular frequency was swept at different rates and its effect on the absorption line profile was studied both experimentally and theoretically.     

Grazing bifurcation and chaotic oscillations of vibro-impact systems with one degree of freedom

The bifurcations of dynamical systems, described by a second-order differential equation with periodic coefficients and an impact condition, are investigated. It is shown that a continuous change in the coefficients of the system, during which the number of impacts of the periodic solution increases, leads to the occurrence of a chaotic invariant set.     

Shadowing along subsequences for continuous mappings

We prove a result concerning the presence of “partial” shadowing for mappings of the most general form. We demonstrate that, for any mapping of a metric compact set into itself and any sufficiently precise pseudotrajectory, there exists an infinite subsequence of some trajectory that pointwise approximates the subsequence of the pseudotrajectory in question with the same indices.

After the publication of the work entitled "Dermatan sulfate in tunicate phylogeny: Order-specific sulfation pattern and the effect of [→4IdoA(2-Sulfate)β-1→3GalNAc(4-Sulfate)β-1→] motifs in dermatan sulfate on heparin cofactor II activity", by Kozlowski et al., BMC Biochemistry 2011, 12:29, we found that the legends to Figures 2 to 5 contain serious mistakes that compromise the comprehension of the work. This correction article contains the correct text of the legends to Figures 2 to 5.     

Chaos in vibroimpact systems with one degree of freedom in a neighborhood of chatter generation: II

We study the rectilinear motion of a mass point with impacts against a stopper. The motion between the impacts is described by a second-order ordinary differential equation with a parameter. The impact recovery coefficient also depends on the parameter of the vibroimpact system. We describe a bifurcation that leads to the generation of a Smale horseshoe in a parametric neighborhood of the chatter phenomenon. We prove the existence of an invariant set described by symbolic dynamics.

Evolution of atomic collision cascades in vanadium crystal with internal structure

The formation of radiation-damage regions (radiation-damage cascades) in vanadium crystallites with internal structures (intergrain boundary) has been simulated by the molecular-dynamic method. The interatomic interaction is described within the embedded-atom method. A relatively small number of clusters of intrinsic point defects (vacancies and self-interstitial atoms) are formed both in ideal vanadium crystallites and in crystallites with boundaries after the relaxation of atomic-displacement cascades. The evolutionary character of atomic-displacement cascades is determined in many respects by the presence of extended boundaries in materials. The intergrain boundaries hinder the propagation of atomic-displacement cascades and store many radiation-induced defects.
