Banach algebras of singular integral operators with piecewise continuous coefficients. General contour and weight

The Banach algebra generated by one-dimensional linear singular integral operators with matrix valued piecewise continuous coefficients in the spaceL _p (,) with an arbitrary weight is studied. The contour consists of a finite number of closed curves and open arcs with satisfy the Carleson condition. The contour may have a finite number of points of selfintersection. The symbol calculus in this algebra is the main result of the paper.     

The conditions of selfadjointness of the operator of singular integration

It is proved that the operator of singular integration along a bounded rectifiable curve is self-adjoint in the weighted spaceL ₂(, ) if and only if is a circle and (t)=const.     

Critical points of essential norms of singular integral operators in weighted spaces

We show that for any simple piecewise Ljapunov contour there exists a power weight such that the essential norm |S | in the spaceL ₂(, ) does not depend on the angles of the contour and it is given by formula (2). All such weights are described. For the union =₁₂ of two simple piecewise Lyapunov curves we prove that the essential norm |S | inL ₂() is minimal if both ₁ and ₂ are smooth in some neighborhoods of the common points. It is the case when the norm |S | in the spaceL ₂() as well as inL ₂(, ) does not depend on the values of the angles and it can be calculated by formula (5).     

Radial electric fields and confinement in the TJ-II stellarator

Radial plasma potential profiles have been obtained in the TJ-II by the Heavy Ion Beam Probing (HIBP) diagnostics. Results show that the potential increases up to 1 kV near the magnetic axis in ECRH low-density plasmas. The secondary ion current profiles, which directly reflect the plasma density, are hollow. In low-density ECRH operation, radial electric fields are found to be positive in the plasma core, however, a reduction in these fields is observed with increasing density. Radial plasma potential profiles show evidence of structures in configurations with low-order rational surfaces. In particular, HIBP measurements have permitted characterization of the plasma potential profile during e-ITB formation. Experiments in TJ-II have shown that it is possible to modify the global confinement and edge plasma parameters with limiter biasing, illustrating the direct impact of radial electric fields on confinement properties. Plasma potential measurements by the HIBP diagnostic show a strong impact of heating method (ECRH versus NBI) on radial electric fields.Presented at the Workshop Electric Fields Structures and Relaxation in Edge Plasmas, Nice, France, October 26–27, 2004.

Factorization of selfadjoint quadratic matrix polynomials with real spectrum

Factorization theorems, and properties of sets of eigenvectors, are established for regular selfadjoint quatratic matrix polynomials L(λ) whose leading coefficeint is indefinite or possibly singular, and for which all eigenvalues are real of definite type. The two linear factors obtained have spectra which are just the eigenvalues of L(λ) of positive and negative types, respectively.     

Hilbert-Carleman and regularized determinants for linear operators

A general theory of regularized and Hilbert-Carleman determinants in normed algebras of operators acting in Banach spaces is proposed. In this approach regularized determinants are defined as continuous extensions of the corresponding determinants of finite dimensional operators. We characterize the algebras for which such extensions exist, describe the main properties of the extended determinants, obtain Cramer's rule and the formulas for the resolvent which are expressed via the extended tracestr(A ^k ) of iterations and regularized determinants.This paper is a continuation of the paper [GGKr].
