Performance evaluation of fiber Bragg grating sensors by digital holographic technique, strain gauge measurement

In view of the growing interest for non-destructive tests of materials, geodynamical monitoring and in general remote sensing, there is a great effort to bring practical optical sensors from research labs to industrial and environmental applications. In this paper, we employ digital holographic technique as an efficient tool for evaluating the strain measurement capability of fiber Bragg gratings (FBG). A cantilever beam has been employed as a test structure under loading test. The strain measurements results obtained by fiber-based sensors have been compared to those obtained by using full-field digital holographic technique and point-wise strain gauge sensors glued on the same cantilever beam. A simple theoretical model is also presented to interpret and compare the experimental results coming from different techniques.     

Normal Vietoris Implies Compactness: A Short Proof

One of the most celebrated results in the theory of hyperspaces says that if the Vietoris topology on the family of all nonempty closed subsets of a given space is normal, then the space is compact (Ivanova-Keesling-Velichko). The known proofs use cardinality arguments and are long. In this paper we present a short proof using known results concerning Hausdorff uniformities.     

Steric and kinetic effects of changing solvent and reactant in grignard reactions: Conformationally mobile versus rigid δ-keto esters

trans-7α-carbomethoxy-decal-1-one (2) yields a mixture of the two oxy-esters 6 and 7 on reacting with MeMgX. Ratios $\text{6}\text{7}$ were measured for reactions performed in benzene (with X = I) and in THF (with X = Cl). The small variations of the ratios $\text{6}\text{7}$ as compared to those obtained in analogous experiments performed with methyl (2-oxo-cyclohexyl)-propionate 4 and methyl 4-methyl-5-oxo-hexanoate 5 suggest that conformational mobility plays a fundamental role in determining the variations of stereospecificity with varying the reaction conditions. Competitive Grignard reactions among 2,4 and 5 show that their reactivities are in the order 4>2>5 ($\text{K}{}_4\text{k}{}_2$ = 1.7; $\text{k}{}_5\text{k}{}_2$=0.8) when reactions are performed in benzene with X  I and 2>4>5 ($\text{k}{}_4\text{k}{}_2$= 0.56; $\text{k}{}_5\text{k}{}_2$=0.25) when reactions are performed in THF with X  C1. The experimental data are interpreted in terms of anchimeric assistance given by the ester group to the reactions of the keto group in conformationally mobile δ-keto esters. The occurrence of this effect depends on the reaction conditions which can favour, or not, folded transition states.     

Investigation on the Interaction of Bendazac with β-, Hydroxypropyl-β-, and γ-, yclodextrins

The interactions of Bendazac, a topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, with-cyclodextrin, hydroxypropyl--cyclodextrin and -cyclodextrinwere investigated to evaluate possibilities to improve the drug's poor water solubilityand eventually to enhance the topical delivery of Bendazac. Phase solubility studiesdemonstrated the ability of the selected cyclodextrins to complex with Bendazac andincrease drug solubility. The amount of solubilized Bendazac increased linearly withthe addition of each cyclodextrin according toA_L type plots. ¹³C-NMR studiesshowed that the Bendazac A-ring was included in the cavity of the three cyclodextrins.The -cyclodextrin was also able to include the B-ring of Bendazac, forminga complex where one drug molecule fitted into two cyclodextrin molecules. Equimolarsolid systems of the drug with each cyclodextrin carrier were prepared using varioustechniques (physical mixing, spray-drying and freeze-drying). The results of differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared analysis, performed on the solid systems, demonstrated that freeze-dried and spray-dried products had a high degree of amorphization and agreed with the hypothesis of the existence of drug–cyclodextrin interaction in the solid state. The cyclodextrins tested were able to improve the dissolution of Bendazac. The dissolution profile of the drug was also affected by the physico-chemical properties of each solid system, the freeze-dried products being the most rapidly dissolving forms.     

Variations on selective separability in non-regular spaces

We study various variations on selective separability in non-regular topological spaces. We use the notions of θ-closure and θ-density to define selective versions of θ-separability. These properties are also related to topological games.     

Alkylation of δ-ketoesters : a mechanism change depending on conformational mobility and substituent effects on stereoselection.

Kinetic evidence shows that the two groups of a δ-ketoester can interact in the transition state of a Grignard reaction. This promotes high stereoselectivity by chiral center far from the ketonic group and produces good correlations between stereoselection and electronic effects of substituents.     

Nanocomposites by melt intercalation based on polycaprolactone and organoclay

Nanocomposites based on biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL) and organically modified layered silicates (organoclay) were prepared by melt mixing. Their structures and properties were characterized by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and rheological measurements. The exfoliation of the organoclay was achieved via a melt mixing process in an internal mixer and showed a dependence on the type of organic modifier, the organoclay contents, and the processing temperature. The addition of the organoclay to PCL increased the crystallization temperature of PCL, but a high content of the organoclay could show an inverse effect. The PCL/organoclay nanocomposites showed a significant enhancement in their mechanical properties and thermal stability due to the exfoliation of the organoclay. The nanocomposites showed a much higher complex viscosity than the neat PCL and significant shear‐thinning behavior in the low frequency range. The shear storage modulus and loss modulus of the nanocomposites also exhibited less frequency dependence than the pure PCL in the low frequency range, and this was caused by the strong interactions between the organoclay layers and PCL molecules and by the good dispersion of exfoliated organoclay platelets in the PCL. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A predictive approach based on the Simha–Somcynsky free‐volume theory for the effect of dissolved gas on viscosity and glass transition temperature of polymeric mixtures

The gas concentration and pressure effects on the shear viscosity of molten polymers were modeled by using a unified approach based on a free volume theory. A concentration and pressure dependent “shift factor,” which accounts for free volume changes associated with polymer‐gas mixing and with variation of absolute pressure as well as for dilution effects, has been herein used to scale the pure polymer viscosity, as evaluated at the same temperature and atmospheric pressure. The expression of the free volume of the polymer/gas mixture was obtained by using the Simha and Somcynsky equation of state for multicomponent fluids. Experimental shear viscosity data, obtained for poly(ε‐caprolactone) with nitrogen and carbon dioxide were successfully predicted by using this approach. Good agreement with predictions was also found in the case of viscosity data reported in the literature for polystyrene and poly(dimethylsiloxane) with carbon dioxide. Free volume arguments have also been used to predict the T_g depression for polystyrene/carbon dioxide and for poly(methyl methacrylate)/carbon dioxide mixtures, based on calculations performed, again, with the Simha and Somcynsky theory. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Duality in Function Spaces

In this paper we use Bartle’s technique to study duality between a topological space and a function space. Normally such a duality forms an essential part of Functional Analysis. We introduce several new topologies such as the topology of even convergence T_e, the closed-cocompact topology T_{k ′}, the (strong) local proximal convergence. We explore the topological groups of self-homeomorphisms of a topological space and shed light on the earlier work of Arens, Dieudonné, Di Concilio. We also study the concepts such as evenly equidistant, functionally equicontinuous, due to Bouziad-Troallic and topologically equicontinuous due to Royden. In memory of Professor Enrico Meccariello who made a considerable contribution to this work and who suddenly passed away before his time     

A study of π andK production in proton-uranium and oxygen-uranium interactions at 22 GeV/A using decay muons

The like-sign dimuons copiously recorded in the NA 38 experiment both inp-U and O?U reactions at 200 GeV/nucleon are interpreted as resulting from decays of π andK mesons in comparable proportions. The ++/?? ratio is large (?1.7) and ascribed to theK ⁺ being more copiously produced than theK ^?. Both the average transverse momentum and the ++/?? ratio are comparable forp-U and O?U reactions, and both increase only slightly with the transverse energyE _T .
