A band-dominant function on the Euclidean sphere embedded in R q+1 is the restriction to this sphere of an entire function of q+1 complex variables having a finite exponential type in each of its variables. We develop a method to represent such a function using finitely many bits, using the values of the function at scattered sites on the sphere. The number of bits required in our representation is asymptotically the same as the metric entropy of the class of such functions with respect to any of the L p norms on the sphere.  相似文献

A zonal function (ZF) network is a function of the form x↦∑ k=1 n c k (x · y k), where x and the y k's are on the unit sphere in q+1 dimensional Euclidean space, and where the y k's are scattered points. In this paper, we study the degree of approximation by ZF networks. In particular, we compare this degree of approximation with that obtained with the classical spherical harmonics. In many cases of interest, this is the best possible for a given amount of information regarding the target function. We also discuss the construction of ZF networks using scattered data. Our networks require no training in the traditional sense, and provide theoretically predictable rates of approximation. A method of imaging distributions of cold atoms under the presence of large trapping-field-induced level shifts is investigated. By utilizing a probe laser tuned to an open transition, the fluorescence yield per atom is largely fixed throughout the trap volume, independent of the trapping field. This enables a reliable conversion of fluorescence images into atomic-density profiles. The method is applied to measure distributions of 87Rb atoms in a high-gradient (2.7 kG/cm) magnetic atom guide. We characterize the parameters for which the open-channel imaging method performs best. Results of quantum Monte Carlo simulations verify the underlying assumptions of the method.  相似文献

We study the solutions of an equation of the form Lu=f, where L is a pseudo-differential operator defined for functions on the unit sphere embedded in a Euclidean space, f is a given function, and u is the desired solution. We give conditions under which the solution exists, and deduce local smoothness properties of u given corresponding local smoothness properties of f, measured by local Besov spaces. We study the global and local approximation properties of the spectral solutions, describe a method to obtain approximate solutions using values of f at points on the sphere and polynomial operators, and describe the global and local rates of approximation provided by our polynomial operators.
