Speed of adaptation in structured populations

Adaptation of populations takes place with the occurrence and subsequent fixation of mutations that confer some selective advantage to the individuals which acquire it. For this reason, the study of the process of fixation of advantageous mutations has a long history in the population genetics literature. Particularly, the previous investigations aimed to find out the main evolutionary forces affecting the strength of natural selection in the populations. In the current work, we investigate the dynamics of fixation of beneficial mutations in a subdivided population. The subpopulations (demes) can exchange migrants among their neighbors, in a migration network which is assumed to have either a random graph or a scale-free topology. We have observed that the migration rate drastically affects the dynamics of mutation fixation, despite of the fact that the probability of fixation is invariant on the migration rate, accordingly to Maruyama's conjecture. In addition, we have noticed a topological dependence of the adaptive evolution of the population when clonal interference becomes effective.     

Preparation of clarithromycin. Selective 6-O-methylation of the novel erythromycin A 9-O-(2-pyrimidyl)oxime

A new method for the preparation of clarithromycin is described through the highly regioselective O-methylation at C(6)-OH of the novel derivative 9-pyrimidyloxime erythromycin A. The facile synthesis of 6,11-O-dimethyl- and 6,11,12-O-trimethyl erythromycin A is also reported. These compounds are useful as standards to assess clarithromycin purity in quality control processes.     

Electrocatalytic Oxidation of 5‐(Hydroxymethyl)furfural Using High‐Surface‐Area Nickel Boride

The electrochemical oxidation of the biorefinery product 5‐(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) to 2,5‐furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), an important platform chemical for the polymer industry, is receiving increasing interest. FDCA‐based polymers such as polyethylene 2,5‐furandicarboxylate (PEF) are sustainable candidates for replacing polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Herein, we report the highly efficient electrocatalytic oxidation of HMF to FDCA, using Ni foam modified with high‐surface‐area nickel boride (Ni_xB) as the electrode. Constant potential electrolysis in combination with HPLC revealed a high faradaic efficiency of close to 100 % towards the production of FDCA with a yield of 98.5 %. Operando electrochemistry coupled to ATR‐IR spectroscopy indicated that HMF is oxidized preferentially via 5‐hydroxymethyl‐2‐furancarboxylic acid rather than via 2,5‐diformylfuran, which is in agreement with HPLC results. This study not only reports a low‐cost active electrocatalyst material for the electrochemical oxidation of HMF to FDCA, but additionally provides insight into the reaction pathway.     

Lanthanum chromites partially substituted by calcium,strontium and barium synthesized by urea combustion

Because of their electrical, magnetic and catalytic properties rare earth and transition metal mixed oxides are important compounds. Lanthanum chromites have been extensively used as solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) interconnect materials. In this work, lanthanum chromites partially substituted by alkaline earth metals were synthesized by the urea combustion process. TG and DSC techniques were used to evaluate the presence of the organic material in the powder after reaction on the hot plate. The powders were calcinated at 900°C and characterized by XRD and SEM. The results show that the particles have nanometric dimensions and the perovskite structure was formed.     

Lanthanide nitrate complexes with 2-azacyclononanone

Thermal behavior of rare earth nitrate complexes with 2-azacyclononanone (AZA) with Ln(NO₃)₃·3(AZA) composition (where Ln=Gd, Er and Ho) was analyzed in kinetic point of view. Kinetic parameters were calculated from thermogravimetric data. All obtained results were similar. The first decomposition step was representative to the loss of ligand and the residue was essentially Ln₂O₃. Furthermore, a reaction path was proposed for the thermal decomposition of the Ln(NO₃)₃·3(AZA).     

Relation between structure and enthalpy for stacking interactions of aromatic molecules

An approximately linear correlation has been found between the enthalpy of complexation and the area of overlap of the chromophores using published structural and thermodynamical data on the self- and hetero-association of aromatic molecules measured under similar solution conditions. This finding is consistent with the assumption that short-range van-der-Waals forces dominate over other contributions to the enthalpy of stacking of aromatic molecules. It provides a ‘model-independent’ approach for a priori estimation of the enthalpy of aromatic–aromatic stacking interactions from knowledge of the structural properties or vice versa.

Logatom corpus for the assessment of the intelligibility in Spanish speaking environments and its relation with STI measurements

A 1000 consonant–vowel–consonant structure logatoms corpus (CVC-structure), grouped in 10 phonetically equally balanced lists of 100 words each, was developed to satisfy the need of subjective assessment of speech intelligibility in American Spanish speaking environments. This corpus was tested and correlated with the Speech Transmission Index (STI) measurements to compare its articulation intelligibility score with other lists’ scores.Through the development of this work it was determined that in two different acoustically poor rooms that have the same STI (with STI < 0.50), the intelligibility score is lower when the articulation test is performed in a quiet room with high reverberation time than when it is performed in a very noisy room with low reverberation time. The final correlation curve of the American Spanish CVC-structure corpus was around 10% points higher than the CVC_EQB curve obtained by Steeneken and Houtgast in 2002.     

On the Pesin set of expansive geodesic flows in manifolds with no conjugate points

In this paper, we show that the Pesin set of an expansive geodesic flow in compact manifold with no conjugate points and bounded asymptote coincides a.e with an open and dense set of the unit tangent bundle. We also show that the set of hyperbolic periodic orbits is dense in the unit tangent bundle.
