Magnetic resonance findings in sarcoidosis of the thorax.

Fifteen patients with sarcoidosis underwent thoracic MRI examinations. The T2 signal intensity of lymphadenopathy varied, with no characteristic pattern noted. Three of four patients with bright lymph nodes on T2 images had stage I sarcoidosis, but low intensity nodes were also seen in stage I patients. Coronal images were complementary to axial images and better depicted subcarinal adenopathy. MRI does not distinguish the lymphadenopathy of sarcoidosis from other entities, but is useful for defining the anatomic extent of disease and differentiating pulmonary artery enlargement from adenopathy.     

Sliding spark spectroscopy

Summary A new analytical radiation source combined with fiber optics linked to a diode array detection device with modified software is described. The direct-reading spectrometer simultaneously covers the wavelength range 185–510 nm with a spectral resolution of <1.5 nm. Intense optical emission is observed when positionally stable high-current surface sparks supplied by a pulse-generator with definite discharge parameters (max. 800 Ampere/pulse) are sliding over compact non-conductive materials such as plastics, glasses, quartz filters or powder pellets. Substrate vaporization, ionization and excitation processes in the surface discharge plasma channel generate emission corresponding to neutral and ionic states. The spectra are essentially composed of lines emitted by the electrode material (e.g. copper, silver), from the substrate under investigation, radiation continuum as well as structured background from the surrounding air atmosphere. Due to the occurrence of emission lines of reactive fillers, inorganic pigments and stabilizers, a rapid multi-element screening method is demonstrated. A rapid identification system (mix-up test) of PVC or fire-retardant thermoplastics within one second has been realized from the atomic emission line intensity originating from the sputtered copper electrode material according to its increased volatility in the presence of chlorine (modified Beilstein test).Puls-Plasma-Technik GmbH, Dortmund

The System V–Cr–N has been investigated at 1100 and 1400 °C and at nitrogen pressures between 1 and 1000 atmospheres by X-ray techniques. VN and CrN on the one hand and V₂N and Cr₂N on the other are forming complete series of solid solutions. The phase field of the mononitride solid solution is dependent on nitrogen pressure and temperature conditions.

Rates of base-catalysed cleavage of pyridyl-, quinolyl-, picolyl- and (quinolylmethyl)-trimethylsilanes

Rates of cleavage of some picoyl- and (quinolylmethyl)-trimethylsilanes (RSiMe₃, where R = PyCH₂ or QnCH₂SiMe₃) have been measured in “90%” aqueous methanolic sodium methoxide at 50°C. Relative reactivities are: 2-PyCH₂, 1.0; 3-PyCH₂, 0.030; 4-PyCH₂, 8.9; 2-QnCH₂, 41; 3-QnCH₂, 0.161; 4-QnCH₂, 37. The rates correlate well with those for base-catalysed hydrogen-exchange in the parent carbon acids RH. Approximate pK_a's (based on the scale of ion-pair acidities in CsNHC₆H₁₁H₂NC₆H₁₁, with pK_a of 9-phenylfluorene = 18.6) for the carbon acids, RH, can be derived as follows: 2-PyCH₃, 29.5; 3-PyCH₃, 34; 4-PyCH₃, 27; 2-QnCH₃, 25; 3-QnCH₃, 32; 4-QnCH₃, 25.Rates of cleavage of pyridyl- and quinolyl-trimethylsilanes (PySiMe₃ and QnSiMe₃) by sodium hydroxide in 4 : 1 v/v Me₂SO/H₂O at 50°C have also been measured; and the relative reactivities are: 2-Py, 1.0; 3-Py, 2.9; 4-Py, 8.4; 2-Qn, 15.9; 3-Qn, 12.7; 4-Qn, 184. The sequence of reactivity differes from that for base-catalysed hydrogen-exchange at the relevant positions of pyridine and quinoline, indicating that the reactivities are not determined in both cases (if in either) solely by the stabilities of the corresponding carbanions.     

Über substituierte Bis-biphenylen-allyl-Radikale

Zusammenfassung Fluoren reagiert in Gegenwart starker Basen mit Biphenylenvinylbromiden vom Typ (Biph)C=C(R)-Br; dabei bilden sich unter Halogenwasserstoffabspaltung direkt die Anionen acider Propene, deren Entladung mit K₃Fe(CN)₆ sehr stabile Kohlenstoffradikale liefert. Die Dehydrierung des 1,4-Bis-[bis-biphenylen-propenyl-(2)]-benzols ergibt das Biradikal V. Die 2-Arylbis-biphenylen-allyl-Radikale liegen in Lösung und im Fest-zustand bis 77° K monomer vor; ihre Elektronen- und ihre ESR-Spektren wurden aufgenommen.     

Monte Carlo study of the pair correlation function for a liquid with non-central forces

The pair correlation function g(R), giving the probability that the centers of two nonspherical molecules are a distance R apart irrespective of their orientations, has been studied by the Monte Carlo method. The pair potential model studied is of the type u_o + u_a, where u_o is the isotropic Lennard-Jones (12,6) potential and u_a is either a dipole-dipole, quadrupole-quadrupole, or anisotropic overlap interaction. Dipolar and quadrupolar forces are found to have a small effect on g(R), whereas anisotropic overlap forces have a large effect.     

The adamantane rearrangement of 1,2-trimethylenenorbornanes. Part IV. Hydride-ion abstraction in 1,2-exo-trimethylenenorbornane

In the AlBr₃-catalyzed adamantane rearrangement in CS₂ of 1,2-exo-trimethylenenorbornane ( 1 ) to 2-endo,6-endo-trimethylenenorbornane ( 3 ), hydride-ion abstraction occurs at C(6) from the exo-side. The k_H/k_D value for competition between 1 and 5 (D_exo-C(6)) was 1.58 ± 0.05, whereas no kinetic isotope effect was operative for competition between unlabeled 1 and 4 (D_endo-C(5)) and between 1 and 6 (D_endo-C(6)).     

Some remarks concerning matrices of the form A–A′, A−1A′

Matrices and operators of the formA ^–1 A ^* have received a certain amount of attention in recent years. Here some of the literature is surveyed and the caseA ^–1 A is studied for complex matrices withA denoting the transpose ofA. A generalization ofA ^–1 A is introduced.

Hier wird ein Ueberblick über Teil der relevanten Literatur gegeben und auch der FallA ^–1 A für komplexe Matrizen studiert, wobeiA die Transponierte vonA ist. Es wird auch eine Verallgemeinerung vonA ^–1 A eingeführt.
