Preliminary investigations of ultrasound induced acoustic streaming using particle image velocimetry
Particle image velocimetry was used to investigate ultrasound-induced acoustic streaming in a system for the enhanced uptake of substances from the aquatic medium into fish. Four distinct regions of the induced streaming in the system were observed and measured. One of the regions was identified as an preferential site for substance uptake, where the highest velocities in proximity to the fish surface were measured. A positive linear relationship was found between the ultrasound intensity and the maximum streaming velocity, where a unitless geometric factor, specific to the system, was calculated for correcting the numerical relationship between the two parameters. The results are part of a comprehensive study aimed at improving mass transdermal administrations of substances (e.g. vaccines, hormones) into fish from the aquatic medium. 相似文献

The electrospinning method has been employed to fabricate ultrafine nanofibers of ultrahigh‐molecular‐weight polyethylene for the first time with a mixture of solvents of different dielectric constants and conductivities. The possibility of producing highly oriented nanofibers from ultrahigh‐molecular‐weight polymers suggests new ways of fabricating ultrastrong, porous, and single‐component nanocomposite fibers with improved properties. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Rate processes including change of phase are modelled analytically for a half-space porous substance exposed to a jump in external temperature. The model predicts, in a closed form, the pressure build-up and the rate of evaporation of volatiles from a porous matrix. It assumes two distinct regions separated by a moving interface where the change of phase takes place. One region maintains its initial concentration of volatiles while the second is devoid of volatiles. Different thermophysical properties are considered for the two regions. A common source of error in particle image velocimetry (PIV) is the presence of bright spots within the images. These bright
spots are characterized by grayscale intensities much greater than the mean intensity of the image and are typically generated
by intense scattering from seed particles. The displacement of bright spots can dominate the cross-correlation calculation
within an interrogation window, and may thereby bias the resulting velocity vector. An efficient and easy-to-implement image-enhancement
procedure is described to improve PIV results when bright spots are present. The procedure, called Intensity Capping, imposes
a user-specified upper limit to the grayscale intensity of the images. The displacement calculation then better represents
the displacement of all particles in an interrogation window and the bias due to bright spots is reduced. Four PIV codes and a large set of experimental
and simulated images were used to evaluate the performance of Intensity Capping. The results indicate that Intensity Capping
can significantly increase the number of valid vectors from experimental image pairs and reduce displacement error in the
analysis of simulated images. A comparison with other PIV image-enhancement techniques shows that Intensity Capping offers
competitive performance, low computational cost, ease of implementation, and minimal modification to the images. 相似文献

A mechanism for radical formation from aromatic sulfinic acids through the disproportionation reaction is suggested. It is postulated that two parallel steps, one a bimolecular reaction and the other involving a trimer of sulfinic acid, yield sulfenyl sulfonate. This labile compound decomposes into free radicals or reacts with another molecule of sulfinic acid producing thiol sulfonate and sulfonic acid. This mechanism explains the variety and unusually high orders encountered in polymerization initiated by sulfinic acid initiators. The proposed kinetic scheme is in agreement with the proton dependence found for both the initiation as well as the disproportionation reactions. 相似文献

Nonlinear irreversible processes between states which are not local equilibrium states are investigated by methods of the kinetic theory. The phenomenological equations for the second-order fluxes in a multicomponent mixture are derived, and relations between some of the second-order phenomenological coefficients are established. It is shown that new independent forces appear in the second-order equation, namely the gradients of the chemical potentials. Expressions for the entropy, entropy flux, and entropy source are evaluated. These expressions are related to the phenomenological equations and coefficients, e.g., all the second-order contributions of the forces in the equations for the fluxes can be obtained by differentiation of the expression for the second-order entropy source with respect to the coupled forces. 相似文献

We study experimentally and numerically the nonlinear scattering of wave packets by local multisite guiding centers embedded in a continuous dielectric medium as a function of the input power and angle of incidence. The extent of trapping into the linear modes of different sites is manipulated as a function of both the input power and the angle of incidence, demonstrating power-controlled switching of nonlinear trapping by local photonic potentials. 相似文献

A possible role that might have been played by ordered clusters at interfaces for the generation of homochiral oligopeptides under prebiotic conditions has been probed by a catalyzed polymerization of amphiphilic activated alpha-amino acids, in racemic and chiral non-racemic forms, which had self-assembled into two-dimensional (2D) ordered crystallites at the air-aqueous solution interface. As model systems we studied N(epsilon)-stearoyl-lysine thioethyl ester (C(18)-TE-Lys), gamma-stearyl-glutamic thioethyl ester (C(18)-TE-Glu), N(alpha)-carboxyanhydride of gamma-stearyl-glutamic acid (C(18)-Glu NCA) and gamma-stearyl-glutamic thioacid (C(18)-thio-Glu). According to in-situ grazing incidence X-ray diffraction measurements on the water surface, (R,S)-C(18)-TE-Lys, (R,S)-C(18)-TE-Glu, and (R,S)-C(18)-Glu-NCA amphiphiles self-assembled into ordered racemic 2D crystallites. Oligopeptides 2-12 units long were obtained at the air-aqueous solution interface after injection of appropriate catalysts into the water subphase. The experimental relative abundance of oligopeptides with homochiral sequence generated from (R,S)-C(18)-TE-Lys and (R,S)-C(18)-TE-Glu, as determined by mass spectrometry on enantioselectively deuterium-labeled samples, was found to be significantly larger than that obtained from (R,S) C(18)-thio-Glu which polymerizes randomly. An efficient chiral amplification was obtained in the polymerization of non-racemic mixtures of C(18)-Glu-NCA since the monomer molecules in the racemic 2D crystallites are oriented such that the reaction occurs between heterochiral molecules related by glide symmetry to yield heterochiral oligopeptides whereas the enantiomer in excess, in the enantiomorphous crystallites, yield oligopeptides of a single handedness. 相似文献

A new approach for solving the laminar flow problem above a porous medium is presented here, using an apparent interface for
which both superficial velocity and intrinsic shear stress are continuous. The derivation of this approach is based on a detailed
investigation of the Ochoa-Tapia and Whitaker (Int. J. Heat Mass Transfer 38:2635–2646, 1995a) jump condition and its sensitivity
to the value of β (the jump condition coefficient) and to an error in the interface location. While the value of the jump
condition coefficient is highly sensitive to the interface location, the new apparent interface approach does not require
an a priori information about the location of the interface. This approach can be easily used knowing only one measurable
parameter—the maximum velocity or the flow rate. Validation of the apparent interface approach against measurements from other
works shows that it can be successfully used to predict the velocity profile for different geometrical models. 相似文献
