Current methodologies used for the inference of thin film stress through curvature measurement are strictly restricted to stress and curvature states that are assumed to remain uniform over the entire film/substrate system. These methodologies have recently been extended to a single layer of thin film deposited on a substrate subjected to the non-uniform misfit strain in the thin film. Such methodologies are further extended to multi-layer thin films deposited on a substrate in the present study. Each thin film may have its own non-uniform misfit strain. We derive relations between the stresses in each thin film and the change of system curvatures due to the deposition of each thin film. The interface shear stresses between the adjacent films and between the thin film and the substrate are also obtained from the system curvatures. This provides the basis for the experimental determination of thin film stresses in multi-layer thin films on a substrate.  相似文献

The controversial issue of whether dislocations can travel faster than shear or longitudinal waves is investigated. The Peierls model, modified to account for drag and gradient effects, furnishes a kinetic relation between the applied shear stress and speed of uniformly moving dislocations. This relation predicts intersonic and supersonic speeds at high enough stress, but also regimes of unstable motion, in agreement with recent atomistic simulations.  相似文献

The Coherent Gradient Sensor (CGS) is extended to the optical differentiation of specular, diffracted wave fronts leading to the combined measurement of in- and out-of-plane displacement field gradients. A derivation of the underlying optical interference principles is presented along with an analysis of the effective instrument sensitivity. In order to demonstrate the capabilities of the technique, experimental measurements of crack-tip deformation fields were conducted under various loading conditions corresponding to mode-I, mode-II, and mixed mode near-tip crack fields. The experimental procedures and results of these tests are presented as validation of the technique.  相似文献

The generation and the subsequent evolution of dynamic failure events in homogeneous layered materials that occur within microseconds after impact were investigated experimentally. Tested configurations include three-layer and two-layer, bonded Homalite specimens featuring different bonding strengths. High-speed photography and dynamic photoelasticity were utilized to study the nature, sequence and interaction of failure modes. A series of complex failure modes was observed. In most cases, and at the early stages of the impact event, intra-layer failure (or bulk matrix failure) appeared in the form of cracks radiating from the impact point. These cracks were opening-dominated and their speeds were less than the crack branching speed of the Homalite. Subsequent crack branching in several forms was also observed. Mixed-mode inter-layer cracking (or interfacial debonding) was initiated when the intra-layer cracks approached the interface with a large incident angle. The dynamic interaction between inter-layer crack formation and intra-layer crack growth (or the so-called “Cook–Gordon Mechanism”) was visualized for the first time. Interfacial bonding played a significant role in impact damage spreading. Cracks arrested at weak bonds and the stress wave intensity was reduced dramatically by the use of a thin but ductile adhesive layer.  相似文献

We investigate certain issues pertaining to plane deformations with discontinuous gradients sustained by compressible, isotropic, hyperelastic materials. Conditions on the elastic potential which are necessary and sufficient for the existence of such deformations are derived. An alternative, explicit set of criteria is deduced from these, which involves jump conditions restricting the deformation invariants on either side of the discontinuity. This result, which is expressed in terms of the local amounts of shear and dilatation, characterizes all possible two-phase states sustained by a given elastic potential. Some implications of ellipticity loss on the existence of such states are considered.  相似文献
