Differential inhibition of postnatal brain,spinal cord and body growth by a growth hormone antagonist

Background  

Growth hormone (GH) plays an incompletely understood role in the development of the central nervous system (CNS). In this study, we use transgenic mice expressing a growth hormone antagonist (GHA) to explore the role of GH in regulating postnatal brain, spinal cord and body growth into adulthood. The GHA transgene encodes a protein that inhibits the binding of GH to its receptor, specifically antagonizing the trophic effects of endogenous GH.     

Application of nonspecific biosensors methodology for right choice of diagnostic criteria for food allergy and intolerance on the basis of specific human IGG determination

Under consideration is the application of a methodology of nonspecific biomarkers to the interpretation of the titers of specific immunoglobulins of type IgG for the purpose of accurate determination of a threshold between normal and abnormal values. Proposed is a mathematical model of assessment of a phase status of a biological entity based on the ranking of a series of concentrations of specific immunoglobulins of type IgG.     

Effect of thermal annealing on the magnetic properties of thin films of Co-Pd alloys

The results of studies of the effect of thermal annealing on the magnetic properties of thin films of Co-Pd alloys are described, along with a method for obtaining easy-axis perpendicular anisotropy in these materials. The method consists of depositing layers of the alloy on a substrate whose thermal expansion coefficient is considerably smaller than that of the film, and then annealing it in a vacuum. This method is used to prepare samples with rectangular hysteresis loops for magnetization perpendicular to the plane of the film, coercive forces of 750 Oe, and Kerr rotation angles of 0.21°. Also presented are the results of experiments on thermomagnetic recording on the samples. Zh. Tekh. Fiz. 68, 66–70 (April 1998)     

Reactions of HO2 with NO,OH and HO2 studied by EPR/LMR spectroscopy

A combined EPR/LMR spectrometer and fast-flow system has been used to investigate the reactions HO₂ + NO(k₁), HO₂ + OH(k₂), HO₂ + HO₂(k₃) at room temperature. The rate constants have been measured: k₁ = (7.0 ± 0.6) × 10^?12 cm³ s^?1 (P = 7–10 Torr);k₂ = (5.2 ± 1.2) × 10^?11 cm³ s^?1 (P = 8–10 Torr);k₃ = (1.65 ± 0.3) × 10^?12 cm³ s^?1 (P = 2.1–24.9 Torr). The conclusion is drawn from analysis of the literature and the present work that k₂ and k₃ do not depend on pressure up to 1 atm.     

Quartet Pair and Radical Quartet Pair Mechanisms of Electron Spin Polarization Developed within Nonbonded Dimers

Novel mechanisms of the electron spin polarization were reported. Effect of spin-selective interactions within the photo-excited preexisting molecular dimers was utilized. Processes occurring within dimers and upon escape from the dimer cage were considered.     

Reduction of pyracylene by alkali metals: Mechanism and formation of aggregates

Five reaction stages have been identified in the reduction of pyracylene to its dianion. The same stages were also observed in the photochemical oxidation starting with the dianion. The formation of dimers of anions and of mixed valence aggregates is discussed.
