High temperature corrosion behaviour of M(Co,Ni)CrAIY-coatings on high temperature materials-microanalytical investigations

In our former investigations, the phenomenon high temperature corrosion (HTC) was described exemplarily on selected materialcoating combinations for blades of stationary gas turbines, mainly in the temperature region of up to 750° C. To answer the question, in which manner higher gas inlet and/or higher material surface temperature would influence the HTC behaviour, a special analytical technique—the integral layer profile analysis—was introduced to ameliorate concentration profile methods. By examining IN 738 LC specimens with CoCrAlY plasma spray coating, stressed by hot gas at 900° C, the limits of this system are shown by explaining the corrosion mechanism; the method is also used for other systems, e.g. U 520 with NiCrAlY coating at 750° C.     

A generalized Dantzig—Wolfe decomposition principle for a class of nonconvex programming problems

Since Dantzig—Wolfe's pioneering contribution, the decomposition approach using a pricing mechanism has been developed for a wide class of mathematical programs. For convex programs a linear space of Lagrangean multipliers is enough to define price functions. For general mathematical programs the price functions could be defined by using a subclass of nondecreasing functions. However the space of nondecreasing functions is no longer finite dimensional. In this paper we consider a specific nonconvex optimization problem min {f(x):h _j (x)g(x),j=1, ,m, xX}, wheref(·),h _j (·) andg(·) are finite convex functions andX is a closed convex set. We generalize optimal price functions for this problem in such a way that the parameters of generalized price functions are defined in a finite dimensional space. Combining convex duality and a nonconvex duality we can develop a decomposition method to find a globally optimal solution.This paper is dedicated to Phil Wolfe on the occasion of his 65th birthday.     

Modelling interactions between a PBB and fullerenes

Fullerenes have many uses including in medical and electronic nanodevices. High pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) columns are generally used to extract a certain structure of fullerne from a mixture of them. In this paper, we investigate the interactions between various types of fullerenes and a station phase in HPLC known as pentabromobenzyl (PBB). The Lennard-Jones potential and a continuum approach are employed to determine the van der Waals energy of these interactions within the HPLC columns. The equilibrium configurations for any given distance between a fullerene and the centre of a PBB are obtained. Results of this study may assist the design of a chromatography column for fullerene separation.     

Tuning the Product Spectrum of a Glycoside Hydrolase Enzyme by a Combination of Site-Directed Mutagenesis and Tyrosine-Specific Chemical Modification

Selective chemical modification of proteins plays a pivotal role for the rational design of enzymes with novel and specific functionalities. In this study, a strategic combination of genetic and chemical engineering paves the way for systematic construction of biocatalysts by tuning the product spectrum of a levansucrase from Bacillus megaterium (Bm-LS), which typically produces small levan-like oligosaccharides. The implementation of site-directed mutagenesis followed by a tyrosine-specific modification enabled control of the product synthesis: depending on the position, the modification provoked either enrichment of short oligosaccharides (up to 800 % in some cases) or triggered the formation of high molecular weight polymer. The chemical modification can recover polymerization ability in variants with defective oligosaccharide binding motifs. Molecular dynamic (MD) simulations provided insights into the effect of modifying non-native tyrosine residues on product specificity.     

Problems of the stereoselectivity in the norbornadiene [2+2]-cyclodimerization reactions catalyzed by hydride nickel(i) complexes. Theoretical aspects

Cyclodimerization of norbornadiene (NBD) yielding pentacyclic products of exo-trans(cis)endo-structure in the presence of the model catalytically active complex Ni(H)(η⁴-NBD) has been studied using the DFT/PBE method. The rate-limiting reaction step is the reductive elimination of the metallacycle, the decomposition of the latter yields the norbornadiene dimer.     

New Reactions of N‐tert‐Butylimines; Formation of N‐Heterocycles by Methyl Radical Elimination on Flash Vacuum Thermolysis of N‐Benzylidene‐ and N‐(2‐Pyridylmethylidene)‐tert‐butylamines

Thermal reactions of N‐benzylidene‐ and N‐(2‐pyridylmethylidene)‐tert‐butylamines ( 5 and 13 ) under FVT conditions have been investigated. Unexpectedly, at 800 °C, compound 5 yields 1,2‐dimethylindole and 3‐methylisoquinoline. In the reaction of 13 at 800 °C, 3‐methylimidazo[1,5‐a]pyridine was obtained as the major product. Mechanisms of these reactions have been proposed on the basis of DFT calculations. Furthermore, UV‐photoelectron spectroscopy combined with FVT has been applied for direct monitoring and characterization of the thermolysis products in situ.     

Linear and Cyclic Hybrids of Alternating Thiophene–Amino Acid Units: Synthesis and Effects of Chirality on Conformation and Molecular Packing

The dipeptide isostere 5‐aminothiophene carboxylic acid has been combined with L ‐phenylalanine moieties to provide linear and cyclic hybrid oligopeptides. A suitable protecting group strategy and appropriate coupling methods have been developed to guarantee a high degree of enantiopurity of the resulting amides. Cyclic tetraamides have been efficiently obtained by macrocyclization of the linear derivatives. In the case of racemized cyclization precursors, two diastereomeric macrocycles (S,S/R,R and meso) have been isolated. Their crystal structures show clear effects of the stereogenic centers on the ring conformations and molecular packing.
