Synthesis and thermal crosslinking of oxazolidine‐functionalized polyurethanes

A new oxazolidine derivative was obtained from phenol, 2‐amino‐2‐methylpropane‐1,3‐diol and paraformaldehyde. The reaction of this novel oxazolidine diol with phenylisocyanate lead to a urethane model compound which can be polymerized thermally by oxazolidine ring opening to give a Mannich bridge structure. Linear segmented polyurethanes were prepared by reaction of different ratios of oxazolidine diol and commercial polyethylenglycol (M_w ～ 400) with 4,4′‐methylenbis (cyclohexylisocyanate) (HMDI, 90% isomers mixture). The polyurethanes were thermally characterized and crosslinked by oxazolidine ring opening to obtain materials which showed improved thermal stability. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Growth of Sb-Bi gradient single crystals

The growth conditions and structural quality of Sb-Bi gradient single crystals with Bi content from 2 to 18 at %, grown by the Czochralski method with solid phase feed, are investigated. Bi distribution in the crystals along their pulling direction are studied by electron probe microanalysis and the change in the interplanar spacing is analyzed by double-crystal X-ray diffraction. It is established that the pulling rate and feed mass affect the Bi distribution in Sb-Bi single crystals.     

Application of principal component analysis to the study of multiple equilibria systems : Study of copper(II)/salicylate/mono-, di- and triethanolamine systems

Principal component analysis is applied to the study of multiple equilibria systems based on copper (Il) ion with salicylate and mono-, di- or triethanolamine as ligands. A procedure based on evolving factor analysis is described which allows the model-free determination of distribution plots and of the individual spectra of the various species formed in the course of a spectrophotometric titration. The results are compared with those obtained by using least-squares methods.     

Determination of indican and tryptophan in normal and uraemic patients by high-performance liquid chromatography with a new electrochemical detector

A simple analytical procedure has been developed for the determination of indican and tryptophan in biological fluids by reversed-phase liquid chromatography using a new electrochemical detector consisting of a tubular anode obtained by moulding graphitized carbon black and polyethylene. The hydrodynamic voltammetry of these compounds has been carried out and it has been found that, by operating in isocratic conditions with phosphate buffer (pH 4.0)-methanol (93:7), the reported compounds can be determined directly. The procedure can be applied for the determination of the free compounds on ultrafiltered serum as well as of their total content on serum deproteinized with methanol. Levels of both compounds in normal and uraemic patients have been measured and the relative ratios between free and total content yield a useful marker for patients with renal disease. The limits of quantitation of indican and tryptophan in serum were 5 and 10 ng/ml, respectively. The within-day assay coefficient of variation for total indican and tryptophan ranged from 3.0 to 3.6% and from 3.8 to 4.1%, respectively. The day-to-day assay coefficient of variation for total indican and tryptophan ranged from 3.4 to 3.7% and from 4.6 to 5.0%, respectively.     

A critical comparison of computer programs for the potentiometric determination of stability constants

The performance of five of the best-known computer programs LETAGROP, SCOGS, MINIQUAD, SUPERQUAD and ESTA, is critically discussed. All these programs are based on least-squares refinement procedures but differ in some important aspects: (a) the definition of the residuals function; (b) the minimization procedure; (c) the statistical and weighting parameters. Each of these aspects is evaluated and the programs are compared on this basis.     

Study of the Capabilities of the ALICE inner tracking system stand-alone for HBT analysis

Results are shown from a Monte Carlo simulation study of the capabilities of the Inner Tracking System of the ALICE experiment, used in standalone mode, for HBT analysis of Pb?Pb collisions at LHC energies (5.5 ATeV). Different values of the coherence factor and the Gaussian source radius have been studied. For this purpose, a specific ITS stand-alone tracking algorithm, based on the Denby-Peterson neural algorithm, has been developed.     

Advances on tensor network theory: symmetries,fermions, entanglement,and holography

This is a short review on selected theory developments on tensor network (TN) states for strongly correlated systems. Specifically, we briefly review the effect of symmetries in TN states, fermionic TNs, the calculation of entanglement Hamiltonians from projected entangled pair states (PEPS), and the relation between the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) and the AdS/CFT or gauge/gravity duality. We stress the role played by entanglement in the emergence of several physical properties and objects through the TN language. Some recent results along these lines are also discussed.
