Performance evaluation of PVdF gel polymer electrolytes

A series of gel polymer electrolytes containing PVdF as homo polymer, a mixture of 1:1 Ethylene Carbonate (EC) : Propylene Carbonate (PC) as plasticizer and lithium-bistrifluoromethane sulphone imide [imide — LiN (CF₃SO₂)₂] has been developed. Amounts of polymer (PVdF), plasticizer and the imide lithium salt have been varied as a function of their weight ratio composition in this regard. Dimensionally stable films possessing appreciable room temperature conductivity values have been obtained with respect to certain weight ratio compositions. However, conductivity data have been recorded at different possible temperatures, i.e., from 20 °C to 65 °C. XRD and DSC studies were carried out to characterize the polymer films for better amorphicity and reduced glass transition temperature, respectively. The electrochemical interface stability of the PVdF based gel polymer electrolytes over a range of storage period (24 h – 10 days) have been investigated using A.C. impedance studies. Test cells containing Li/gel polymer electrolyte (GPE)/Li have been subjected to undergo 50 charge-discharge cycles in order to understand the electrochemical performance behaviour of the dimensionally stable films of superior conductivity. The observed capacity fade of less than 20% even after 50 cycles is in favour of the electrochemical stability of the gel polymer electrolyte containing 27.5% PVdF −67.5 % EC+PC −5% imide salt. Cyclic voltammetry studies establish the possibility of a reversible intercalation — deintercalation process involving Li⁺ ions through the gel polymer electrolyte.     

Chiral β-dimethylaminoalkylphosphines. Highly efficient ligands for a nickel complex catalyzed asymmetric grignard cross-coupling reaction

Chiral β-dimethylaminoalkylphosphines were prepared starting with amino acids, (S)-alanine, (S)-phenylalanine, (R)-phenylglycine, (S)-valine, and (R)-tert-leucine. The chiral phosphines were found to be highly efficient ligands for a nickel catalyzed asymmetric Grignard cross-coupling reaction (38～94% optical yield).     

Vinyl polymerization. CCCXXXIX. Effect of chain length of nylon 3 on the polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated with the system of nylon 3, copper(II) ion,and water

It was found recently that the system of nylon 3, copper(II) ion, and water could initiate a radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate(MMA). In the present paper, the effect of average chain length of the molecules of nylon 3 on the rate of polymerization of MMA was studied. The rate increased with the chain length of nylon 3. This result was explained well by the fact that the shorter nylon 3 forms a complex with copper (II) ion more easily than longer nylon 3. It was assumed that the shorter nylon 3 fills three or four coordination sites of copper(II) ion and loses the ability to initiate the polymerization. The efficiency of grafting of MMA and the degree of polymerization of MMA homopolymer were independent of the chain length of nylon 3.     

Mechanism of stereoregular polymerization of butadiene by homogeneous Ziegler-Natta catalysts. I. Effects of the species of transition metals

Butadiene was polymerized by catalysts of the type: metal acetylacetonate (metal: Ti to Ni in the periodic table)–triethylaluminum–aluminum halide, with various ratios of triethylaluminum to aluminum halide. The minimum cis content was observed with vanadium catalyst in all cases, while the minimum polymer yields were observed with the iron and the manganese catalysts. These transition metal effects are discussed in terms of the crystal field theory, and it is suggested that the electrostatic interaction between the nearly nonbonding electrons of transition metal atom and a butadiene molecule or a growing end of the polymeric chain plays an important role in the stereoregular polymerization of butadiene by homogeneous Ziegler-Natta catalysts.     

A new route to methyl (R,E)-(-)-tetradeca-2,4,5-trienoate (pheromone of Acanthoscelides obtectus) utilizing a palladium-catalyzed asymmetric allene formation reaction

[reaction: see text] A formal total synthesis of the sex attractant of male dried bean beetle, methyl (R,E)-(-)-tetradeca-2,4,5-trienoate, was achieved by a new efficient route utilizing the Pd-catalyzed asymmetric allene synthesis reaction. It was found that the atropisomeric biaryl bisphosphine (R)-segphos showed better enantioselectivity than (R)-binap in the Pd-catalyzed reaction for preparing alkyl-substituted axially chiral allenes.     

Substoichiometric precipitation of silicon as barium fluorosilicate

Distillation and substoichimetric precipitation for silicon have been developed for the determination of trace amounts of silicon. It is based on substoichiometric precipitation as barium fluorosilicate and the distillation of silicon tetrafluoride. The separation has been applied for the determination of silicon in gallium arsenide and NBS steel as standard reference material.     

Structure elucidation of AK-toxins,host-specific phytotoxic metabolites produced by alternaria kikuchiana tanaka

The structures of two host-specific phytotoxic metabolites, AK-toxin I and II, isolated from culture broth of Alternaria kikuchiana Tanaka (the fungus causing black spot disease of Japanese pear) were determined to be the ester consisting of N-acetyl-β-methyl-phenylalanine and 9,10-epoxy-8-hydroxy-9-methyl-2E, 4Z, 6E-decatrienoic acid ($\text{1}$) and its β-demethyl derivative ($\text{2}$).     

Rhodium-catalyzed isomerization of alpha-arylpropargyl alcohols to indanones: involvement of an unexpected reaction cascade

A rhodium-catalyzed isomerization of alpha-arylpropargyl alcohols to indanones has been developed under mild conditions. Considering the ease of preparation of these propargyl alcohols (terminal alkynes + aromatic aldehydes), this method provides a new way of constructing indanones with high efficiency. By the mechanistic investigations using deuterium-labeled substrates, it has also been demonstrated that the reaction goes through an unexpected cascade, with a 1,4-hydrogen shift being the turnover-limiting step of the catalytic cycle.     

Extraction—photometric determination of trace amounts of nitrite in waters

Traces of nitrite in river water can be determined by extraction spectrophotometry. Nitrite in 100 ml of sample water at pH 1.5–3.0 diazotizes p-aminoacetophenone, which is then coupled with m-phenylenediamine at the same pH. The 2,4-diamino-4'-acetyl-azobenzene formed is extracted into 5 or 10 ml of toluene at pH 9 and the absorbance is measured at 450 nm. The molar absorptivity is about 2.3·lO⁴ l mol^?1 cm^?1. The ions normally present in river water do not interfere. The nitrite contents in river waters in Okayama Prefecture, Japan, are 1–30 P.P.b.     

High enantioselectivity in rhodium-catalyzed allylic alkylation of 1-substituted 2-propenyl acetates

[reaction: see text] Rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation of 1-substituted 2-propenyl acetates with dimethyl malonate proceeded with high enantioselectivity in the presence of cesium carbonate as a base and a rhodium catalyst generated from Rh(dpm)(C(2)H(4))(2) (dpm = dipivaloylmethanato) and a chiral phosphino-oxazoline whose basic skeleton is axially chiral binaphthyl to give branch alkylation products in greater than 90% ee.
