Total synthesis of (+)-tubelactomicin A. 2. Synthesis of the upper-half segment and completion of the total synthesis

[reaction: see text]. We have completed the total synthesis of natural (+)-tubelactomicin A (1), a 16-membered macrolide antibiotic. This Letter presents a highly efficient synthesis of the upper-half segment (C14-C24) and the completion of the total synthesis featuring a high-yielding Stille coupling for the connection of the upper-half and lower-half segments and Mukaiyama macrolactonization for the construction of the entire structure of 1.     

Chiral recognition of amino acids and dipeptides by a water-soluble zinc porphyrin

A chiral water-soluble zinc porphyrin was optically resolved on a chiral HPLC column, and the binding of chiral amino acids and peptides to each of the enantiomers was examined spectrophotometrically in basic aqueous solution. The binding data apparently indicated that the zinc porphyrin has chiral selectivity for amino acids and dipeptides. This was reasonably explained in terms of the triple cooperation of coordination, Coulomb, and steric interactions of the chiral amino carboxylates with the porphyrin. A compensatory relationship among the thermodynamic parameters for chiral recognition was also shown.     

Conversion of phenyl-substituted cyclopentadienes to pyrylium cations

Phenyl-substituted cyclopentadienes are proved to form phenylated pyrylium cations in the presence of silver(I) perchlorate by insertion of an oxygen atom into the cyclopentadiene-ring. Three phenylated pyrylium compounds, [(Ph(5)C(5)O(+))(ClO(4)(-))](2)(CH(2)Cl(2)) (1), Ag(ClO(4))(H(2)O)(Ph(4)HC(5)O(+)) (ClO(4)(-)) (2), and (Ph(3)H(2)C(5)O(+))(ClO(4)(-)) (3) have been synthesized and characterized. A possible reaction pathway and formation mechanism of the pyrylium cation are proposed and discussed.     

Total synthesis of (+)-macquarimicin A

The first total synthesis of (+)-macquarimicin A (1), a novel inhibitor of neutral sphingomyelinase (N-SMase) with antiinflammatory activity, has been accomplished. The present work determined the absolute configuration of (+)-1 and revised the C(2)-C(3) geometry to be Z. The synthesis features a transannular Diels-Alder reaction, which constructed the tetracyclic framework stereoselectively, and a convergent and efficient synthetic pathway, which afforded (+)-macquarimicin A (1) in 27 steps (longest linear sequence) with 9.9% overall yield.     

Comparative measurements of solar UV radiation with spore dosimetry at three European and two Japanese sites

Spore dosimetry of solar UV radiation has been employed in several field intercomparison campaigns carried out in summer months in Japan and Europe. The dose-rate profiles, total daily doses and personal daily exposures have been determined and compared at five sites based on the spore inactivation dose (SID). The maximum dose rate (0.83 SID/min) and the maximum daily dose (197 SID) observed at subtropical Naha (26.2 degrees N) are about three times those observed at subarctic Abisko (68.4 degrees N). The amounts of personal exposure during three European campaigns are moderate and show a tendency of inverse relationships with the daily doses.     

InGaAsP multiple quantum well edge-emitting light-emitting diode showing low coherence characteristics using selective-area metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy

Low coherence multiple-quantum well edge-emitting light-emitting diodes were obtained using selective-area metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxial growth, which utilized growth rate enhancement on an open stripe region between mask stripes. An optical absorption region, which was controlled by selective-area growth, was introduced to suppress optical feedback. At a driving current of 100 mA and an ambient temperature of 25°C, a power of 55 μW was coupled into a single-mode fiber, and a broad spectrum without spectral ripple was observed. Low coherence characteristics and very small temperature dependence were obtained in the temperature range from -40°C to 85°C. The modulation bandwidth was 210 MHz at a bias current of 100 mA.     

Micro-thermal analysis of thermal conductance distribution in advanced silicon nitrides

A micro-thermal analysis technique was applied to investigate advanced silicon nitride materials, which exhibit high thermal conductivity. Local thermal properties in the microstructure were evaluated, and the grain boundaries were observed to have lower thermal conductance than the Si₃N₄ grains. It was found that thermal conductance both in the grains and boundaries was lowered by the addition of the sintering aid Al₂O₃, which is soluble in Si₃N₄ grains. This indicates that high thermal conductivity in silicon nitride ceramics is achieved both by grain growth, leading to a reduction in boundary density, and by eliminating soluble elements in silicon nitride grains. Oxygen nonstoichiometry effect on structural modulation in Bi-2212 cuprate superconductors

The X-ray diffraction patterns for Bi₂Sr₂Ca_1−xY_xCu₂O_8+y sintered in air or Ar indicated that the reduction in the number of excess oxygen ions induced a structural change from orthorhombic to pseudotetragonal. When the oxygen contents decreased with the reducing treatment, the period of modulation in Bi₂Sr₂Ca_1−xY_xCu₂O_8+y increased. This result supported the model of excess oxygen ions in the Bi---O sheet. However, it was difficult to understand the change of modulation period with increasing Y contents using the model of excess oxygen ions in the Bi---O layers. Also, it is included that the Y substitution for Ca and La substitution for Sr in the Bi₂Sr₂CaCu₂O_8+y system result in parallel effects for the modulation structure.
