Supercritical CO2 as a superior solvent for the cyclization of diallylmalonate catalyzed by palladium-containing zeolites

Palladium-containing zeolites catalyze the cycloisomerization of diethyl diallylmalonate to dimethylcyclopentenes. When the reaction is carried out in toluene, the performance of the palladium catalyst depends on the pore size of the zeolites. At 60 °C, palladium adsorbed on large pore size Beta zeolite (pore size ∼7.4 Å) is more active than medium pore size ZSM-5 (pore size ∼5.4 Å). This lower activity of ZSM-5 compared to Beta is attributable to the restricted diffusion of reagent and products through the ZSM-5 channels as compared to Beta zeolite. However, due to the gas-like diffusion characteristic of the supercritical state, the activity of ZSM-5 increases and becomes identical to that of Beta zeolite using supercritical CO₂ as medium.     

Left, right, and inner socles of associative systems

We investigate the basic properties of the different socles that can be considered in not necessarily semiprime associative systems. Among other things, we show that the socle defined as the sum of minimal (or minimal and trivial) inner ideals is always an ideal. When trivial inner ideals are included, this inner socle contains the socles defined in terms of minimal left or right ideals. X-ray diffraction study of some mesogenic copper, nickel and vanadyl complexes

We present a comparative study of various metallomesogenic complexes, using X-ray diffraction methods. For a given ligand linked to different metal atoms (Cu, Ni, VO), the nature of this central atom influences mainly the magnetic susceptibilities of the mesophases. With different ligands, which keep the close neighbourhood of the metal atom unchanged, the apparent length of the mesogenic unit is longer for short ligands than for longer ones. This unexpected behaviour is qualitatively well explained by taking into account the global shape of the different complexes.     

Complexation of the Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug Nabumetone with Modified and Unmodified Cyclodextrins

The inclusion of the anti-inflammatory drug, Nabumetone, in -, - and hydroxypropyl--cyclodextrin (CDs) is studied using UV-VIS absorption and steady-state fluorescence emission. Binding constants and thermodynamic parameters of complex formation are determined by spectrofluorimetry. The inclusion phenomena of Nabumetone with the three cyclodextrins is compared with that of the well known similar anti-inflammatory drug Naproxen. In the case of Nabumetone pronounced differences are observed in the complexation process with each cyclodextrin whereas the respective Naproxen complexes are nearly identical. ¹H-NMR experiments show that the inclusion process in Nabumetone can occur either through the substituents in the -2 (butanone) or -6 (methoxy) positions in the naphthalene ring.     

Single-step preparation and catalytic activity of mesoporous MCM-41 and SBA-15 silicas functionalized with perfluoroalkylsulfonic acid groups analogous to Nafion

Preparation of hybrid organic-inorganic MCM-41 and SBA-15 silicas functionalized with perfluoroalkylsulfonic acid groups has been achieved in a single step by reacting the mesoporous silicas with 1,2,2-trifluoro-2-hydroxy-1-trifluoromethylethane sulfonic acid beta-sultone; the catalysts showed higher activity than commercial Nafion-silica composite for the esterification of long chain fatty acids with ethanol.     

Coupling continuous flow systems to instruments based on discrete sample introduction

The interfaces between low-pressure continuous sample treatment systems and high-level information instruments such as gas chromatographs, capillary electrophoresis equipment and graphite furnace atomic spectroscopic instruments, which are characterized by conventional discrete sample introduction devices, are presented. The present and future developments are discussed of (directly) linking real samples and those analytical equipments with the main objective of avoiding or minimizing manually implemented preliminary operations of the analytical process. The effect of octyl glucoside on the lamellar phase of diluted C12E4 and alcohol systems

A systematic study on phase behavior of the mixture of nonionic surfactants with alcohols at 30.0+/-0.1 degrees C was carried out. The total surfactant concentration was kept to 0.1 M varying the mole ratio of n-octyl beta-d-glucopyranoside (OG) and tetraethylene glycol monododecyl ether. Two uniphasic regions were found, the lamellar phase at low OG mole fraction and micelles at high OG mole fraction. The presence of OG favors the lamellae-micelle transition. Alkanols and benzyl alcohol were used as cosurfactants. The more hydrophobic alcohols (octanol and decanol) increase the OG content in the mixed bilayers. On the contrary, benzyl alcohol is not as favorable to the OG incorporation in the lamellar phase as in the mixed micelles. The L(3) phase has only been found as a uniphasic region with hexanol.     

Electrochemical and ESR study of 5-nitrofuryl-containing thiosemicarbazones antiprotozoal drugs

Cyclic voltammetry and electron spin resonance (ESR) techniques were used in the investigation of several potential antiprotozoal thiosemicarbazones nitrofurane derivatives. A self-protonation process involving the protonation of the nitro group due to the presence of an acidic proton in the thiosemicarbazone moiety was observed in the first step of a CEE(rev) reduction mechanism of these derivatives. ESR spectra of the free radicals obtained by electrolytic reduction were characterized and analyzed. AM1 methodology was used to obtain the optimized geometries and UB3LYP calculations were performed to obtain the theoretical hyperfine coupling constants. The theoretical study exhibited an unusual assignment of the spin densities showing a free radical centered in the thiosemicarbazone moiety rather than the nitro which are in agreement with the experimental hyperfine pattern.     

Enantioselective synthesis of 1-deoxy-d-gulonojirimycin from a phenylglycinol-derived lactam

Cyclocondensation of (R)-phenylglycinol with appropriately γ-substituted δ-oxo acid derivatives provides bicyclic lactams from which the enantioselective synthesis of 1-deoxy-d-gulonojirimycin has been reported.
