The phonetic identification ability of an individual (SS) who exhibits the best, or equal to the best, speech understanding of patients using the Symbion four-channel cochlear implant is described. It has been found that SS: (1) can use aspects of signal duration to form categories that are isomorphic with the phonetic categories established by listeners with normal auditory function; (2) can combine temporal and spectral cues in a normal fashion to form categories; (3) can use aspects of fricative noises to form categories that correspond to normal phonetic categories; (4) uses information from both F1 and higher formants in vowel identification; and (5) appears to identify stop consonant place of articulation on the basis of information provided by the center frequency of the burst and by the abruptness of frequency change following signal onset. SS has difficulty identifying stop consonants from the information provided by formant transitions and cannot differentially identify signals that have identical F1's and relatively low-frequency F2's. SS's performance suggests that simple speech processing strategies (filtering of the signal into four bands) and monopolar electrode design are viable options in the design of cochlear prostheses.  相似文献

It has been three decades since electronic computers were first introduced into the business community. The application of computers to business functions and business information problems has led to profound changes in the way that businesses operate. OR began to penetrate the business community at roughly the same time that the first large-scale DP applications began to appear.The computer has had a significant impact on OR as an “enabling device”, at least. The OR community has not, however, paid particular attention to the evolution of the computer, its use in business information applications, nor the management problems associated with effective use. The explosive growth of computer technology, the utilization of the computer in new business areas such as office automation, and the evolving awareness of concepts such as Information Resources Management provide a renewed opportunity for OR to contribute substantially.The objectives of this review paper are to describe this new opportunity area for OR, to place it in an appropriate historical and technological context, and to suggest ways in which the OR community might take up this important challenge.  相似文献

The effects of water vapor on the separation of CO2 and CH4 using cellulose acetate, polyethersulfone, polysulfone and sulfolene modified poly(vinylidene fluoride) membranes were determined. Response surfaces of flux on a dry basis and separation factor clearly show the effects of feed gas water vapor content and temperature on the permeation characteristics of the film. Strong trends of a plasticizing effect due to the concentration of water in the membranes were apparent. In general, in the commercial films, the flux went through a maximum with increasing feed water content while the separation factor decreased. These variables changed little in the sulfolene modified film. At 90°C, water permeation accounted for up to 35 percent of the total permeate.  相似文献

We investigate the quantum thermodynamic properties of small (HCl)(n) clusters using stereographic projection path integral simulations. The HCl stretches are rigid, the orientations are mapped with stereographic projection coordinates, and we make use of the reweighted random series techniques to obtain cubic convergence with respect to the number of path coefficients. Path integral simulations are converged at and above 10 K for the pentamer and above 15 K for the dimer and the trimer. None of the systems display a melting feature in the classical limit. We find an evidence of quantum induced melting between 15 and 45 K.  相似文献

Two different methods for the regioselective nitration of different meso-triarylcorroles leading to the corresponding β-substituted nitrocorrole iron complexes have been developed. A two-step procedure affords three Fe(III) nitrosyl products-the unsubstituted corrole, the 3-nitrocorrole, and the 3,17-dinitrocorrole. In contrast, a one-pot synthetic approach drives the reaction almost exclusively to formation of the iron nitrosyl 3,17-dinitrocorrole. Electron-releasing substituents on the meso-aryl groups of the triarylcorroles induce higher yields and longer reaction times than what is observed for the synthesis of similar triarylcorroles with electron-withdrawing functionalities, and these results can be confidently attributed to the facile formation and stabilization of an intermediate iron corrole π-cation radical. Electron-withdrawing substituents on the meso-aryl groups of triarylcorrole also seem to labilize the axial nitrosyl group which, in the case of the pentafluorophenylcorrole derivative, results in the direct formation of a disubstituted iron μ-oxo dimer complex. The influence of meso-aryl substituents on the progress and products of the nitration reaction was investigated. In addition, to elucidate the most important factors which influence the redox reactivity of these different iron nitrosyl complexes, selected compounds were examined by cyclic voltammetry and thin-layer UV-visible or FTIR spectroelectrochemistry in CH(2)Cl(2).  相似文献

The synthesis of the protected fragment t-butoxycarbonyl-alanine-isoleucine-serine(benzyl)-proline (Pro)-Pro-OH derived from the hormone erythropoietin is described. The analysis of the peptide by high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and thin-layer chromatography (TLC) yields apparently inconsistent results. Although HPLC consistently indicates the presence of only one component, TLC reveals a number of distinct species. Because satisfactory amino acid analysis and fast atom bombardment-mass spectrometry results are obtained, we think it possible that the distinct components arise from the cis-trans isomerization of the peptide bonds to the prolyl residues. An analysis using capillary electrophoresis under basic conditions identifies four components in the final product. Also, under similar conditions proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is able to confirm the presence of cis and trans isomers. The results from this study demonstrate the usefulness of each of the four techniques in identifying the isomerism of the standard amino acid-Pro bond with respect to the peptide's ionic state.  相似文献
