Optimality of the double exponential formula – functional analysis approach –

Summary. In the light of the functional analysis theory we establish the optimality of the double exponential formula. The argument consists of the following three ingredients: (1) introduction of a number of spaces of functions analytic in a strip region about the real axis, each space being characterized by the decay rate of their elements (functions) in the neighborhood of the infinity; (2) proof of the (near-) optimality of the trapezoidal formula in each space introduced in (1) by showing the (near-) equality between an upper estimate for the error norm of the trapezoidal formula and a lower estimate for the minimum error norm of quadratures; (3) nonexistence theorem for the spaces, the characterizing decay rate of which is more rapid than the double exponential. Gamma-ray spectroscopy of the neutron-rich Ni region through heavy-ion deep-inelastic collisions

Nuclei in the neutron-rich Ni region have been studied by γ-ray spectroscopy. Gamma-rays emitted from isomers, with T _1/2 > 1 ns, produced in heavy-ion deep-inelastic collisions were measured with an isomer-scope. The nuclear structure of the doubly magic ⁶⁸Ni and its neighbor ^69,71Cu is discussed on the basis of the shell model. Future experiments for more neutron-rich Ni nuclei are also viewed. Outflow refreshment angiography: A bright blood, bright static tissue technique

A new “bright blood” strategy, outflow refreshment imaging, is introduced in which a number of overlapping slices are excited in rapid succession. Flowing spins that refresh each overlapped slice portion contribute a bright signal. Additionally, static tissue in each non-overlapped slice portion also yields a bright signal. However, the flow/static contrast is comparable to that produced in inflow refreshment images, and angiograms can be generated by conventional maximum intensity projection processing. The dual ability to visualize angiograms and static tissue images is a major benefit of the strategy. Computer simulations of flow sensitivities and in vivo results are presented which compare the outflow and inflow refreshment imaging strategies.     

Computation of the quasi-stationary distributions inM(n)/GI/1/K andGI/M(n)/1/K queues

In this paper, we provide numerical means to compute the quasi-stationary (QS) distributions inM/GI/1/K queues with state-dependent arrivals andGI/M/1/K queues with state-dependent services. These queues are described as finite quasi-birth-death processes by approximating the general distributions in terms of phase-type distributions. Then, we reduce the problem of obtaining the QS distribution to determining the Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue of some Hessenberg matrix. Based on these arguments, we develop a numerical algorithm to compute the QS distributions. The doubly-limiting conditional distribution is also obtained by following this approach. Since the results obtained are free of phase-type representations, they are applicable for general distributions. Finally, numerical examples are given to demonstrate the power of our method.     

Classification of Extremal Double Circulant Self-Dual Codes of Lengths 64 to 72

Recently extremal double circulant self-dual codes have been classified for lengths n ≤ 62. In this paper, a complete classification of extremal double circulant self-dual codes of lengths 64 to 72 is presented. Almost all of the extremal double circulant singly-even codes given have weight enumerators for which extremal codes were not previously known to exist.     

Anisotropic giant magnetoresistance originating from the π-d interaction in a molecule

We synthesized TPP[Fe^III(Pc)(CN)₂]₂, PTMA_x[Fe^III(Pc)(CN)₂]·y(MeCN), and PXX [Fe^III(Pc)(CN)₂], a new series of charge-transfer salts containing the axially-substituted phthalocyanine (Pc), [Fe^III(Pc)(CN)₂]⁻. In this molecular unit, the π conduction electron derived from the Pc-ring coexists with the d electron which is a potential source of a local magnetic moment. Therefore various phenomena associated with the interplay between local magnetic moments and conduction electrons are expected. We observed the giant negative magnetoresistance (GNMR) in all the three salts. The GNMR is highly anisotropic for the magnetic-field direction, and reflects the g-tensor anisotropy of the local magnetic moment in the [Fe^III(Pc)(CN)₂]⁻ unit. This indicates that the GNMR in these salts originates from the strong π-d interaction in the [Fe^III(Pc)(CN)₂]⁻ unit.
