Structural chemistry of azo complexes

Summary Complexes of Co^II, Ni^II, Cu^II, Pd^II, and Pt^IV with 2,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid and its substituted phenylazoderivatives have been prepared, together with some mixed-metal (Co, Cu or Ni, Cu) complexes of itsm-nitro,m-carboxy andm-hydroxyarylazo derivatives. The stereochemistries and the modes of bonding of the complexes were elucidated by spectral and magnetic susceptibility measurements.Abstracted from her Ph.D. thesis.     

Koordinationschemie von Dinitroresorcin mit Kupfer-, Kobalt-, Nickel-, Eisen- und Zinksalzen

The reactions of the bidentate dinitrosoresorcinol (DNR) with copper, cobalt, nickel, iron and zinc salts were investigated. This ligand was found to react with these metal salts in aqueous media where hydrogen ion was confirmed to be liberated except in case of iron. The solid complexes were prepared in alcoholic media. Chemical analyses, magnetic and spectral data were compatible to determine the structure of these complexes and their mode of chelation.

Electronic Absorption Spectra of Substituted Phenols

The spectral properties of o-aminophenol, catechol, o-nitrophenol, pyrogallol, salicylic acid and gallic acid were investigated in different solvents. The behaviour of hydrogen bonding demonstrated in these systems was discussed.     

Spectral and magnetic properties of phenylazo-6-aminouracil complexes

Complexes of Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) with substituted phenylazo-6-aminouracils containing (-H, p-OH, p-CH(3), p-OCH(3) p-COOH) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic measurements and spectral measurements (IR, UV-Vis, ESR). Infrared spectra assigned the fundamental bands of the major groups, O-H, N-H, C-H, C=O, C=N, N=N, C-N and C-O (nu, delta and gamma modes of vibrations). The absence of nu(OH) and the appearance of nu(C=O) in the infrared spectra of the free ligands of 5-(p-tolyl and p-anisylazo)-6-aminouracil, assigned the keto structure, whereas in cases of 5-(phenyl, p-hydroxyphenyl and p-carboxyphenylazo)-6-aminouracil ligands, the data showed strong nu(OH) and nu(C=O) bands to assign keto-enol tautomerisms. The modes of interactions between the ligands and the metals were discussed, where oxygen and nitrogen atoms (of amino-amide groups) are involved in chelation. The azo group was not involved in chelation for all the prepared complexes except those of copper complexes derived from 5-(phenyl, p-tolyl, p-hydroxyphenyl and p-carboxyphenylazo)-6-aminouracils. The room temperature effective magnetic moment values, the Nujol mull spectra and ESR proved that all the prepared complexes were of octahedral geometry, except the nickel complex derived from 5-(phenylazo)-6-aminouracil and cobalt complex derived from 5-(p-carboxy-phenylazo)-6-aminouracil were square planar.

A colorimetric method for the determination of carboxylic acids

A new colorimetric method for the determination of carboxylic acids using bromocresol green reagent is established. The formed color follows Beer's Lambert law and is stable for 24 hr. The method is successfully applied for measuring the disappearance of volatile fatty acids in P. oxalicum culture media. The method is reproducable and is used also for the quantitative determination of carboxylic acids in Dowex 1-X8 eluates. A linear relationship between the pK₁ of different carboxylic acids and the calculated molar extinction coefficients of the color formed at 440 nm is demonstrated.     

Synthesis of Some New Heterobicyclic Nitrogen Systems Bearing 7H‐1,2,4‐Triazolo[1,5‐d]tetrazol‐6‐yl Moiety for Biological Interest

Reaction of 6‐mercapto‐7H‐1,2,4‐triazolo[1,5‐d]tetrazole ( 1 ) wtih 1,2‐phenylenediamine afforded N‐{7H‐1,2,4‐triazolo[1,5‐d]tetrazol‐6‐yl}‐1,2‐phenylenediamine which was cyclized to benzimidazolyl‐1,2,4‐triazolo[1,5‐d]tetrazoles using various one‐carbon cyclizing agents. Also, the treatment of 1 with maleic anhydride or phthalic anhydride gave the corresponding thio derivatives followed by hydrazinolysis to afford the thio heterobicyclic systems. Former structures of the products have been established upon elemental and spectral analyses.     

Environmental radioactivity of soils and sediments: Egyptian sector of the Nile valley

The activity concentrations of natural ⁴⁰K, ²³²Th, and ²³⁸U in 89 soil and 84 sediment samples collected over the entire Egyptian Nile River basin including the Nile delta are reported based on the results of epithermal neutron activation analysis. The average activity concentrations of ⁴⁰K, ²³²Th, and ²³⁸U equal to 15.3?±?6.6, 15.6?±?11.1 and 220?±?31 Bq/kg, respectively, are significantly lower than those reported for the Upper Continental Crust, World Average Sediments as well as World Average Soils, suggesting the presence of a considerable portion of mafic material, most probably originating from the Ethiopian High Plateau. Their average activity concentrations are statistically the same in soil and sediments, indicating that the Nile sediments and soil material are of the same origin. The main goal of this study was not only to estimate the radiological hazards but also to show the influence of sedimentary material transportable by the Blue Nile from the Ethiopian High Plateau. The different hazard indices like the radium equivalent, gamma index, external hazard as well as the internal hazard show a low radiological exposure either on direct contact or if local mud bricks are used in the construction of dwellings.
