Chiral Interlocked Corrole Dimers Directly Linked at Inner Carbon Atoms of Confused Pyrrole Rings

A facile synthetic strategy towards conformationally stable chiral chromophores based on dimeric porphyrinoids has been established. A peculiar class of face-to-face intramolecularly interlocked corrole dimers were formed by the oxidative C−C coupling linked at the inner carbon sites upon simple treatment of copper(II) ions. Their intrinsic electronic structures were modulated by the peripheral corrole ring annulations, which lead to distinct optical properties and redox profiles. The stereogenic carbon centers implemented in the confused corrole skeleton provided a rationale for designing novel chiral materials.     

Synthesis and biological activities of analogs of a lipid A biosynthetic precursor: 1-O-phosphonooxyethyl-4'-O-phosphono-disaccharides with (R)-3-hydroxytetradecanoyl or tetradecanoyl groups at positions 2, 3, 2' and 3'.

Two novel analogs of a biosynthetic precursor of lipid A (2) were synthesized. The one analog (3) has acyl groups identical to those of 2, and the other (4) has tetradecanoyl groups in place of the (R)-3-hydroxytetradecanoyl groups of 2. Both 3 and 4 possess an alpha-glycosidically-bound phosphonooxyethyl group in place of the alpha-glycosyl phosphate group of 2. Compounds 3 and 4 exhibited definite antitumor activity against Meth A fibrosarcoma and low toxicity in rabbits, as the original compound 2 does. The replacement of the hydroxytetradecanoyl groups with tetradecanoyl groups barely affected the antitumor activity, but slightly enhanced the toxicity in rabbits.     

Temperature Dependence of the Threshold Current and the Lasing Wavelength in 1.3-μm GalnNAs/GaAs Single Quantum Well Laser Diode

Temperature stability of the threshold current and the lasing wavelength is investigated in a 1.3-μm GaInNAs/ GaAs single quantum-well laser. The measured characteristic-temperature was 88 K. The small wavelength shift per change in temperature of 0.35 nm/°C was obtained, indicating the superior lasing-wavelength stability. Therefore, it is shown experimentally that GaInNAs is very promising material for the fabrication of light source with excellent high-temperature performance for optical fiber communications.     

Gas transport through homogeneous and asymmetric polyethersulfone membranes

Both homogeneous and asymmetric polyethersulfone (PES) membranes were prepared by solvent casting. The sorption and permeation behavior of CO₂, O₂, and N₂ using these two kinds of cast PES membranes and commercially available homogeneous PES film was investigated to extract the pressure dependence of gas permeability and the permselectivity for CO₂ relative to N₂, and to confirm the validity of the working assumption that a skin layer in an asymmetric membrane can be essentially replaced by a thick homogeneous dense membrane. The pressure dependence of the mean permeability coefficient to CO₂ in homogeneous membranes obeys the dual-mode mobility model. The ideal separation factor for CO₂ relative to N₂ at an upstream pressure of 0.5 MPa attains ca. 40, while the permeability to CO₂ is about 2.7 Barrer at the same upstream pressure. The same separation factor in asymmetric membranes amounts to 35. The diffusion behavior for the skin layer in an asymmetric membrane with a thin skin layer can be simulated approximately by that in a homogeneous dense membrane. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

A new series of antiallergic agents. I. Synthesis and activity of 11-(2-aminoethyl)thio-6,11-dihydrodibenz[b,e]oxepin derivatives.

A new series of 11-substituted 6,11-dihydrodibenz[b,e]oxepin derivatives was synthesized and evaluated for antiallergic activity. Convenient methods for the preparation of sulfides from alcohols were developed. Structure-activity relationships are described. Compound 7, 11-[2-(dimethylamin)ethyl]thio-6,11-dihydrodibenz[b,e] oxepin-2-carboxylic acid hydrochloride, was the most potent in the rat passive cutaneous anaphylaxis test (ED50 = 0.92 mg/kg p.o.). It had a potent inhibitory effect on anaphylactic bronchoconstriction in guinea pigs (ED50 = 0.029 mg/kg p.o.) and H1 receptor antagonistic effect (Ki = 14 nM) with few central nervous system side effects. Additionally, an antagonistic effect against prostaglandin D2-induced contraction of isolated guinea pig trachea (pA2 = 5.73) was an attractive mechanism of action of the new antiallergic agent. Compound 7 was selected for further evaluation as KW-4994.     

Novel synthesis of macrocycles with 1,1′-binaphthalene-2,2′-diol using intramolecular oxidative coupling

A new series of BINOL-based macrocycles with two phenolic protons have been synthesized via oxidative coupling reaction using CuCl(OH)-TMEDA.     

Self-assembly of double stranded dinuclear titanium(IV)-Schiff base complexes and formation of intramolecular mu-oxo bridges

The reaction of titanium isopropoxide with a Schiff base ligand containing an isobutenyl linker leads to double stranded dinuclear titanium(IV)-Schiff base complexes through self-assembly with concomitant formation of intramolecular mu-oxo bridges upon hydrolysis.     

Development and prevalidation of a method for phenol determination by solid-phase spectrophotometry

A simple, sensitive and rapid solid-phase spectrophotometric procedure was developed for the determination of traces of phenol with 4-aminoantipyrine as a reagent (AAP-SPS), and the optimal experimental conditions were established. This method was performed by sorption and direct absorbance measurements of the product phenol-AAP sorbed on the anion-exchanger Dowex 1-X4 (0.2 g) at 495 nm (absorption maximum) and 700 nm (non-absorption wavelength). The sensitivity offered by the AAP-SPS procedure was higher by a factor of 40 compared with the respective conventional spectrophotometric method. Metrological characteristics were established using a prevalidation strategy. The AAP-SPS procedure is characterized by a linear calibration function in the working range of 0.05–0.50 μmol, low standard deviation of procedure (±0.012), low limit of determination (0.021 μmol), and favorable random (±0.85 to ±11.27%) and systematic deviations (−4.55 to +11.50%). Moreover, the accuracy of the system investigated by the recovery test is acceptable (99–102%). Favorable working and performance characteristics make the new SPS method ideal for phenol monitoring in pharmaceutical preparations as well as other matrices.     

Metal-metal d-d interaction through the discrete stacking of mononuclear M(II) complexes (M = Pt, Pd, and Cu) within an organic-pillared coordination cage

Two molecules of planar MII(acac)2 complexes (M = Pt, Pd, and, Cu; acac = acetylacetonato) are efficiently stacked within an organic-pillared coordination cage, exhibiting characteristic spectroscopies (for M = Pt and Pd) and electron spin-spin coupling (for M = Cu) attributable to metal-metal interaction.
