Status of heavy element research using a gas-filled recoil separator at RIKEN

A gas-filled type of recoil separator for heavy element research was installed at an experimental hall of RIKEN Linear Accelerator facility to realize getting higher intensity of primary beam and long beam time. Performance of the separator was studied using target recoils and various nuclear reactions. The results show the high performance of the separator for heave element research. As an application of the GARIS, production and identification of an isotope of the 110th element ²⁷¹[110] have been performed using the ²⁰⁸Pb(⁶⁴Ni,1n)²⁷¹[110] reaction. Three decay chains coincide well both in decay times and energies with the ones reported by the group of SHIP experiment at GSI, Germany. Our results provide a confirmation of the synthesis of an isotope ²⁷¹[110] of element 110.     

Direct determination of benzamides in serum by column-switching high-performance liquid chromatography.

A column-switching high-performance liquid chromatographic method with fluorescence detection was developed for the simultaneous determination of four benzamide-type anti-psychotic drugs: sulpiride, tiapride, sultopride and metoclopramide in human serum. In this method, a TSKgel Super-ODS column was used as an analytical column, and a TSKgel G 2000SW was prepared as a pretreatment column. Under the optimized analytical conditions, four benzamide-type anti-psychotic drugs were eluted within 18 min. The detection limits (S/N = 3) for sulpiride, tiapride, sultopride and metoclopramide are 1 ng/ml, 4 ng/ml, 2 ng/ml and 0.5 ng/ml, respectively. Finally, the method was applied to the determination of sulpiride in human serum samples obtained after a single oral dose of sulpiride.     

Rapid determination of molar ratios in binary systems by 14 mev neutron activation analysis

The 14 MeV neutron activation analysis method was applied for the rapid and non-destructive determination of the molar ratios of iron(III) oxide and zinc oxide in zinc ferrites. Iron was detected as⁵⁶Mn produced from⁵⁶Fe by the (n, p) reaction, and zinc as the sum of the coincidence counts of the annihilation radiations of the positrons emitted from⁶³Zn and⁶⁴Cu produced from⁶⁴Zn by the (n, 2n) and (n, p) reactions respectively. The ratios of the counts of⁵⁶Mn and the sum of the coincidence counts were not linearly related to the molar ratios of iron(III) oxide and zinc oxide in zinc ferrites. However, by corrections of the mutual contributions to the counts, linear relations were obtained between the ratios of the counts and the molar ratios when the corrected sum of the coincidence counts was used as an internal standard. The experimental and theoretical slopes of the analytical lines agreed within a difference of approximately 10%. The deviations between the results of the activation analysis and those of the chemical analysis were less than 5% of the chemical results.     

Evaluation of thallium-201 myocardial emission computed tomography based on a comparison with postmortem findings

The correlative study of myocardial perfusion assessed by 201Tl myocardial ECT with the pathological finding of the heart was performed in 10 autopsied cases with mean age of 77 years old (range: 60-90 y). In 6 cases with myocardial infarction (MI) 7 perfusion defects were observed, that was, 3 in anteroseptal wall, 1 in anterolateral wall and 3 in posterior wall on the images of SPECT. Seven MIs were also found in postmortem examination. Six MIs were observed at autopsy corresponding to perfusion defect on SPECT images. In one myocardial perfusion defect at inferoposterior portion on SPECT, a non-transmural MI was found at anteroseptum. In one case with valvular disease a false positive result was obtained at posterior wall where neither myocardial necrosis nor fibrosis was observed at autopsy. This case had aortic stenosis due to bicuspid aortic valve by autopsy. The ventricle was divided into 16 segments in each of 4 short axial images to evaluate extent of MI. SPECT for extent of MI showed sensitivity of 81.9%, specificity of 96.0% and diagnostic accuracy of 92.5%. False negative segment was apt to be observed at the surrounding of non-transmural MI or basal half of left ventricle (LV) with transmural MI, while false positive segment was at posterior portion of basal half of LV. It was concluded that myocardial ECT was useful for evaluation of the site and extent of MI.     

Changeable reactivity of ketyl radicals derived from 2-bromomethyl-2-(3-butenyl)benzocyclic-1-alkanones depending on electron transfer conditions employed

Photoinduced electron transfer reaction of 2-bromomethyl-2-(3-butenyl)benzocyclic-1-alkanones with amines afforded 5-exo radical cyclization products while electron transfer reaction with samarium diiodide produced cyclopropanols.     

Dehalogenation of o-dihalogen substituted arenes and α,α′-dihalogen substituted o-xylenes with lanthanum metal

It was found that lanthanum metal caused the dehalogenation of o-dihalogen substituted arenes and α,α′-dihalogen substituted o-xylenes to generate the corresponding benzynes and o-quinodimethanes. When o-dihalogen substituted arenes were allowed to react with lanthanum metal in the presence of dienes, the Diels-Alder products between benzyne and dienes were formed in moderate to good yields. Similarly, the Diels-Alder adducts of o-quinodimethane with dienophiles were obtained, in the reaction of α,α′-dibromo-o-xylenes with lanthanum metal in the presence of dienophiles.     

Synthesis of the proposed structure of plakevulin A: revised structure of plakevulin A

A total synthesis of the proposed structure of plakevulin A was accomplished. However, the NMR spectral data of the synthetic plakevulin A were not identical of those of the reported compound. We next converted the synthetic plakevulin A into 1-dihydrountenone A. The ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectral data of 1-dihydrountenone A were identical with those of reported plakevulin A except for the peaks derived from levulinic acid. Thus, we repurified sample of the natural product and confirmed that the natural sample contained 1-dihydrountenone A and levulinic acid in the ratio of one to one. We also found that not plakevulin A but 1-dihydountenone A possessed the inhibitory activity against mammalian DNA polymerases α and β.     

Mediated amperometric biosensor for hypoxanthine based on a hydroxymethylferrocene-modified carbon paste electrode

An amperometric enzyme electrode for the determination of hypoxanthine in fish meat is described. The hypoxanthine sensor was prepared from xanthine oxidase immobilized by covalent binding to cellulose triacetate and a carbon paste electrode containing hydroxymethylferrocene. The xanthine oxidase membrane was retained behind a dialysis membrane at a carbon paste electrode. The sensor showed a current response to hypoxanthine due to the bioelectrocatalytic oxidation of hypoxanthine, in which hydroxymethyiferrocene served as an electron-transfer mediator. The limit of detection is 6 × 10^?7 M, the relative standard deviation is 2.8% (n=28) and the response is linear up to 7 × 10^?4 M. The sensor responded rapidly to a low hypoxanthine concentration (7 × 10^?4 M), the steady-state current response being achieved in less than 1 min, and was stable for more than 30 days at 5 ° C. Results for tuna samples showed good agreement with the value determined by the conventional method.     

Photoinduced electron-transfer systems consisting of electron-donating pyrenes or anthracenes and benzimidazolines for reductive transformation of carbonyl compounds

Photoinduced electron-transfer reactions of several ketone substrates were studied to evaluate the utilities of 1,6-bis(dimethylamino)pyrene (BDMAP), 1,6-dimethoxypyrene (DMP), 9,10-bis(dimethylamino)anthracene (BDMAA), and 9,10-dimethoxyanthracene (DMA) as electron-donating sensitizers cooperating with 2-aryl-1,3-dimethylbenzimidazolines. BDMAP and DMP generally led higher conversion of ketones and better yield of reduction products compared to BDMAA and DMA.
