Thermoelectric effects in layered conductors in a strong magnetic field

Thermoelectric effects are investigated theoretically in layered conductors with a quasi-two-dimensional electron energy spectrum of arbitrary type in a strong magnetic field. It is shown that, at temperatures sufficiently low for quantization of the orbital motion of charge carriers in a magnetic field to be required, there exist giant quantum oscillations of the thermoelectric field. Thermoelectric emf is studied as a f unction of the orientation of the magnetic field with respect to the layers; experimental investigation of this function allows one to determine the velocity distribution of conduction electrons on the Fermi surface.

Sorption characteristics of polyfluorocarboxamides

The dependence of the variations in the differential molar free energy of sorption of polyfluorocarboxamides R_FC(O)NR₂ (R_F = CF₃(CF₂) _i ,i=0 to 5, R=H or Me) on capillary columns on the molecular structure of the amides, the temperature of analysis, and the nature of the stationary phases (OV-101, XE-60, and PEG-40M) were investigated by GLC. The peculiarities of the variation of the sorption characteristics of amides in XE-60 and PEG-40M polar phases, which cause the inversion of the order of retention of the members of pseudohomologous series, were found.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Whispering-gallery modes in a barrel-shaped dielectric resonator

We experimentally study a new type of resonator, namely, a barrel-shaped dielectric resonator with whispering-gallery modes which is formed by the cutting dielectric hemisphere. Compared with a hemispherical dielectric resonator, the E type oscillation spectrum of such a resonator is rarefied with respect to the azimuthal index. Comparative analysis of the electromagnetic characteristics of the barrel-shaped dielectric resonator and half-disk dielectric resonators shows that the radiation losses of the mode energy from the spherical surface are smaller than those from the cylindrical surface. Gas-liquid chromatography of perfluorocarboxylic thioesters

Perfluorocarboxylic thioesters R_FC(O)SR (R_F=CF₃(CF₂)_j, R=CH₃(CH₂)_i, i andj=0–5) were studied for the first time by GLC on packed columns using SE-30, SKTFT-50X, and XE-60 as the stationary phase. The values of thermodynamics functions of sorption were calculated. The correlations between these functions and the molecular structures as well as the conditions of analysis were established. The insertion of the S atom into the molecules of derivatives of perfluorocarboxylic acids causes a decrease in the contribution of the orientation interaction and an increase in the dispersion interaction of thioesters with the stationary phases compared to esters and amides of perfluorocarboxylic acids studied previously. Kinetics of p-cumylphenol alkylation by isobutylene in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid

Kinetics of p-cumylphenol alkylation by isobutylene in the presence of 0.1–2 wt.% p-toluenesulfonic acid has been studied and a reaction scheme is suggested. The rate constants have been determined.

Genesis of phase composition of supported Al?Fe?O catalysts

XPS, ESR and ESDR methods have been used for studying Al–Fe–O catalysts calcined at 620–1270 K. -Al₂O₃ interaction with impregnating solutions of iron oxalate complexes was shown to lead to the formation of isolated Fe³⁺ ions, and supported phases of solid solutions and associates at 620–820 K.     

Synthesis and Properties of First Bis(fluoreno)crownophanes

Alkylation of 2,7-dihydroxy-9H-fluoren-9-one with 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol, 2-[2-(2-chloroethoxy)-ethoxy]ethanol, and 2-{2-[2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethoxy]ethoxy}ethanol in dimethylformamide in the presence of potassium carbonate gave 78–80% of the corresponding diols which were treated with p-toluenesulfonyl chloride in a dioxanechloroform mixture in the presence of triethylamine at 0– 5°C (30 h). The resulting bis(p-toluene-sulfonates) were brought into condensation with 2,7-dihydroxy-9H-fluoren-9-one in a very dilute solution in dimethylformamide containing anhydrous potassium carbonate at 80–85°C. Appropriate treatment of the reaction mixture, followed by chromatographic purification afforded 53–27% of the first representatives of a new class of cyclophanes, bis(oxofluoreno)crownophanes. Raising the temperature to 95–105°C resulted in an appreciable decrease of the product yield.
