Band bending at the Si(1 1 1)–SiO2 interface induced by low-energy ion bombardment

Experiments employing photoreflectance spectroscopy have uncovered band bending due to electrically active defects at the Si(1 1 1)–SiO₂ interface after sub-keV Ar⁺ ion bombardment. The band bending of about 0.5 eV resembles that for Si(1 0 0)–SiO₂, and both interfaces exhibit two kinetic regimes for the evolution of band bending upon annealing due to defects healing. The healing takes place about an order of magnitude more quickly at the (1 1 1) interface, however, probably because of less fully saturated bonding and higher compressive stress.     

Green chemical synthesis of fluorinated 1,3,5-triaryl-s-triazines in aqueous medium under microwaves as potential antifungal agents

Reasonable pure fluorinated s-triazines were synthesized in quantitative yield (96-99%) in 2-3 min in aqueous medium under microwaves, by reaction of fluorinated anilines and aqueous formaldehyde. All synthesized compounds have been screened in vitro for their antifungal activity against Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium oxysporum, and Collectotrichum capsici.     

Stereospecific adduct ion formation in the chemical ionization mass spectra of E- and Z-1,2,3-triaryl-2-propen-1-ones

Stereospecific adduct ion formation has been observed in the chemical ionization mass spectra (positive and negative) of certain E- and Z-1,2,3-triaryl-2-propen-1-ones. The Z isomers are found to give higher relative abundances of adduct ions than the E isomers. This has been interpreted in terms of the differences in the proton affinities of the isomers originating from their different degrees of enone resonance. Halide ion (CI^? and Br^?) attachment spectra of these compounds also show stereochemical differences in the relative abundances of [M]^?˙ and [M+halide]^? ions, though the effect is not as pronounced as in the case of the positive ion spectra.     

Combining the best in triplex recognition: synthesis and nucleic acid binding of a BQQ-neomycin conjugate

Synthesis of a BQQ-neomycin conjugate is reported. The conjugate combines two ligands, one known to intercalate triplexes (BQQ) and another known to bind in the triplex groove (neomycin). The conjugate stabilizes T.A.T, as well as mixed base DNA triplex, better than neomycin, BQQ, or a combination of both. The conjugate selectively stabilizes the triplex (in the presence of physiological salt concentrations), with as little as 4 muM of the ligand leading to a DeltaTm of >60 degrees C. Competition dialysis studies show a clear preference for the drug binding to triplex DNA/RNA over the duplex/single strand structures. Modeling studies suggest a structure of neomycin bound to the larger W-H (Watson-Hoogsteen) groove with BQQ intercalated between the triplex bases.

A single crystal X-ray analysis has confirmed the constitution and established the stereochemistry of the triterpene, malabaricol.     

Products active on arthropod-IV Insect juvenile hormone mimics—4: hydrindane analogues of cecropia juvenile hormone

Synthesis of cis-hydrindane analogues (2,3) of Cecropia juvenile hormone-I from common intermediate cis-hydrindane-2, 5-dione is presented. The analogues are only moderately active against Dysdercus cingulatus.     

New organosols of nickel sulfides,palladium sulfides,manganese sulfide,and mixed metal sulfides and their use in preparation of semiconducting polymer-metal sulfide composites

Organosols of NiS, PdS, and MnS in N,N-dimethylformamide were prepared by reaction of the metal acetate with H₂S. Organosols of mixed-metal sulfides (Zn _x Cd_1–x S, Hg _x Cd_1–x S, Hg _x Cu_1–x S, Cd _x Mn_1–x S, Hg _x Mn_1–x S, Hg _x Cd_1–x S, and Mn _x Zn_1–x S) were similarly obtained by reaction of mixtures of the metal salts with H₂S. The organosol of Zn_0.5Cd_0.5S contained particle with two particle size distributions centered at 6.5 nm and 29 nm, as revealed by Ar laser-scattering analysis. The metal sulfides are recovered by addition of Et₂O to the organosols. Zn _x Cd_1–x S thus obtained shows magnetic susceptibility in the range 0.5×10^–6–2.3×10^–6 emug^–1 depending on thex value. Addition of polymers to the organosols affords semiconducting films of metal sulfide-polymer composites.

A synthesis of (±)-bakuchiol methyl ether, involving Claisen rearrangement of geranyl vinyl ether as the key step, is described. Further thermal reorganisation of the intermediate 3-vinyl-citronellal is discussed.
