The engineering of many modern electronic devices demands control over a crystal down to the thickness of a single layer of atoms—and future demands will be even more challenging. Such control is achieved by the method of crystal growth known as epitaxy, and that makes this method the subject of intense study. More than that, recent advances are revolutionizing our knowledge of how surfaces grow. In fact, growing surfaces show a beautifully rich variety of phenomena, many of which are only now beginning to be uncovered. In the past few years many surface imaging techniques have been used to give us a close look at how crystals grow—while they are growing. The purpose of this article will be to illustrate some of the ways real surfaces grow and change as revealed by some of the latest in situ microscopic imaging technologies.

It is often said that crystal growth is more of an art than a science. Here we will show that it is emphatically both.  相似文献

Unprocessed single-walled carbon nanotubes suspended in air at room temperature emit bright, sharply peaked band gap photoluminescence. This is in contrast with measurements taken from nanotubes lying on the flat surface for which no luminescence was detected. Each individual nanotube has a luminescence peak of similar linewidth ( approximately 13 meV), with different species emitting at various different wavelengths spanning at least 1.0 to 1.6 microm. A strong enhancement of photoluminescence intensity is observed when the excitation wavelength is resonant with the second Van Hove singularity, unambiguously confirming the origin of the photoluminescence.  相似文献

In conventional fracture-toughness testing, the line of application of the loads remains fixed with respect to specimen geometry. In this testing machine, the load moves with the advancing crack front, and displacement is used as the controlled variable to propagate and arrest a crack. The energy-release rate at the onset of crack propagation and, hence, the plane-strain fracture toughnessK Ic can be measured directly without compliance calibration or stress-intensity evaluation. The specimen is in the form of a flat plat 25 by 50 cm which is simple to machine and provides about 30 values ofK Ic. The versatility of the machine is demonstrated by making a statistical analysis ofK Ic for 7075-T6 Al by showing the effect of plate thickness on the fracture toughnessK c using a tapered specimen, and by evaluatingK c in 7075 Al as a function of aging temperature in a thermal-gradient-treated specimen.  相似文献

Selective area growth on silicon dioxide masked gallium arsenide substrates by chemical beam epitaxy is used to fabricate inverted V-shaped mesas. Indium gallium arsenide quantum wells grown on top of these mesas form quantum wire structures. The faceted mesa sidewalls are described as a function of substrate temperature and V/III ratio in terms of a simple geometric model. The photoluminescence spectra show that the wire structure peak is shifted to longer wavelength compared to unpatterned substrates, for all growth temperatures. This shift is explained by the migration of indium. For low temperature growth, a second peak due to sidewall quantum wells is observed.  相似文献

We discuss the notion of spin squeezing considering two mutually exclusive classes of spin-s states, namely, oriented and non-oriented states. Our analysis shows that the oriented states are not squeezed while non-oriented states exhibit squeezing. We also present a new scheme for construction of spin-s states using 2s spinors oriented along different axes. Taking the case of s=1, we show that the ‘non-oriented’ nature and hence squeezing arise from the intrinsic quantum correlations that exist among the spinors in the coupled state.  相似文献

The aim of this brief report is to study the behaviour of sheath structure in a multi-component plasma with dust-neutral collisions. The plasma consists of electrons, ions, micron size negatively charged dust particles and neutrals. The sheath-edge potential and sheath width are calculated for collisionally dominated sheath. An analytical solution is presented to examine the accuracy of the ‘layer-removal’ method for measuring localized residual stresses. In this approach, strips, which may have been cut from a pipe or a plate, have strain-gage rosettes placed on one face and layers removed from the other face. The strain measurements are used to deduce the residual stress in the layers removed. The stress measured is that along the axis of the strip. It may vary rapidly with axial distance, as for example when the strip is taken from a welded part. The present analysis shows that the actual stress distribution may be quite different from that predicted by the computational model normally used in the layer-removal method. It shows that the difference increases as the ratio of the heighth of the strip from which a layer is removed to the half dimensiona of the localized residual-stress zone increases. It is recommended that the layer-removal method can be used for measuring residual stresses for cases in which the ratio ofh/a is less than or equal to unity.  相似文献

The application of small angle neutron scattering (SANS) to the characterisation of sol–gel hosts containing biomolecules offers the opportunity to explore the relationship between gel structure and catalyst. A model system involving the immobilisation of Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) was investigated.Gels were produced by fluoride-catalysed hydrolysis of fixed ratios of tetramethylorthosilicate (TMOS) and methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS). Phase separation between the enzyme and the evolving sol–gel matrix was minimised by incorporating glycerol into the sol–gel precursor solution. The potential stabilising effect of the NaF catalyst upon the enzyme was also investigated. Scattering studies were conducted on both immobilised lipase, and lipase in free solution. Scattering studies on free enzyme provided evidence of multiple populations of enzyme aggregates and showed that choice of solvent affected the degree of aggregation. Both NaF and glycerol affected neutron scattering, indicating changes in lipase conformation. Increasing glycerol concentration increased the degree of aggregation and produced differences in solvent packing on the surface of protein molecules. Initial evidence from SANS data indicated that the presence of the enzyme during gel formation conferred structural changes on the gel matrix. Modelling the effect of sol–gel encapsulation on lipase requires comparison of data from free enzyme to the immobilised form. Removal of the enzyme from the sol–gel structure, post gelation, is necessary to better characterise the modified matrix. This methodological problem will be the subject of future investigations.  相似文献

The biodegradability of porous sol–gel silica microparticles in physiological buffers has been investigated using a USP4 flow-through dissolution tester. In the open configuration, which most closely models in-vivo conditions, the particles dissolved rapidly at pH 7.4, with a rate dependent on the surface area and media flow rate. In the closed configuration, the fastest dissolving 4 mg silica sample was almost completely dissolved in 100 mL of buffer after 36 h. The initial dissolution rates appeared relatively linear but dropped off as dissolved SiO2 concentrations approached 20–25 ppm. Addition of serum proteins acted to slow dissolution by 20–30%, suggesting a slower degradation in vivo. Silica microparticles administered for controlled release drug delivery would therefore be expected to be eliminated relatively rapidly from the body, depending on the sample size and local fluid flow conditions.  相似文献
