We present new developments of steady light diffusion applied to rheology. Though many techniques allow the structural investigation of diluted or transparent media, very few give direct information on optically dense systems. The technique proposed here is based on the diffusion approximation and is thus valid for sheared, time-dependent flows.After recalling important theoretical results, we show the techniques ability to determine typical sizes and orientation of structures in shear flows for various concentrated suspensions (emulsions, and an industrial softener). In particular, it is able to demonstrate the effect of shear on the orientation of anisotropic objects. Moreover, the use of simple structural models incorporating the measured anisotropy allows good predictions of experimental rheological measurements. This new technique, applicable to a wide range of colloidal systems, is very helpful to characterize the shear induced structural organization of optically dense materials.This paper was presented at the first Annual European Rheology Conference (AERC) held in Guimarães, Portugal, September 11-13, 2003.  相似文献

The development of an all-solid-state cw laser system for optical absorption measurements of the OH radical in the UV spectral range is described. The tunable output of a 1064-nm external-cavity diode laser is amplified by use of a Nd:doped, double-clad fiber amplifier. The amplified near-IR radiation is frequency doubled by a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal and then quadrupled in a beta-barium borate crystal. The design and operation of the system and measurements of OH absorption in the (2, 0) band of the A(2)?(+)- X(2)? electronic transition are discussed.  相似文献

This paper describes the problems faced by a region of British Gas in forecasting daily gas demand and gas storage requirements. The discrete simulation approach is used to model the gas supply system. The yielding of several reversible yield stress fluids is studied during scissometric-like creep experiments. The temporal evolution of the apparent deformation is recorded for applied stresses close and below the usual yield stress. Similarly to solids, three main creep regimes are observed. First, a primary creep regime displaying a temporal power law evolution of the deformation rate occurs, followed by a temporal minimum, which leads to an apparent flow of the material. This local minimum, defined as the “transition time,” and the subsequent fluidization can be observed at long times. The evolution of this time as a function of the applied stress appears to follow a universal law reminiscent of fracture behavior in hard solids.  相似文献

The direct current comparator resistance bridge, Model 9975, manufactured by Guildline Instruments, Inc., which permits electrical resistance measurements up to eight digits, has been fully automated. Details of this automation are described in this paper. The performance of the automated bridge is demonstrated with applications to electrical resistivity studies on some metallic alloys.  相似文献
