Power scaling of blue and red light based on frequency mixing inside adhesive-free bond composite Nd:YAG laser cavity

We report our results on effective third-harmonic generation (THG) by cascading quasi-phase-matched second-harmonic and sum-frequency generation in a dual-period-periodically-poled KTP crystal. Significant improvement of the output powers were achieved for the 440 nm blue light and 660 nm red light based on Q-switched frequency-tripling and frequency-doubling 1319-nm radiation inside an adhesive-free bond composite Nd:YAG laser. The highest output powers of 197 mW and 1.19 W were achieved for the blue and red light at the corresponding input powers of 12.9 and 17.1 W for the diode laser.     

Bioactive meroditerpenes and indole alkaloids from the soil fungus Neosartorya fischeri (KUFC 6344), and the marine-derived fungi Neosartorya laciniosa (KUFC 7896) and Neosartorya tsunodae (KUFC 9213)

Two new metabolites including a new aszonalenin analogue (1c) and a new meroditerpene (3) were isolated, together with aszonalenin (1a), acetylaszonalenin (1b), 13-oxofumitremorgin B (2), aszonapyrone A (4b) and helvolic acid, from the culture of the soil fungus Neosartorya fischeri (KUFC 6344). While the ethyl acetate extract of the culture of the diseased coral-derived fungus Neosartorya laciniosa (KUFC 7896) furnished aszonapyrone B (4a), aszonapyrone A (4b), tryptoquivaline L and 3′-(4-oxoquinazolin-3-yl) spiro[1H-indole-3,5′-oxolane]-2,2′-dione, the ethyl acetate extract of the culture of the marine sponge-associated fungus Neosartorya tsunodae (KUFC 9213) yielded a new analogue of chevalone C (5) and helvolic acid. The structures of the new compounds were established based on 1D and 2D NMR spectral analysis as well as HR-ESIMS. Compounds 1a–c, 2, 3, 4a, 4b and 5 were evaluated for their in vitro growth inhibitory activity on the MCF-7 (breast adenocarcinoma), NCI-H460 (non-small cell lung cancer) and A375-C5 (melanoma) cell lines by the protein binding dye SRB method.     

Mapping the phase diagram of single DNA molecule force-induced melting in the presence of ethidium

When a single DNA molecule is stretched beyond its normal contour length, a force-induced melting transition is observed. Ethidium binding increases the DNA contour length, decreases the elongation upon melting, and increases the DNA melting force in a manner that is consistent with the ethidium-induced changes in duplex DNA stability known from thermal melting studies. The DNA stretching curves map out a phase diagram and critical point in the force-extension-ethidium concentration space. Intercalation occurs between alternate base pairs at low forces and between every base pair at high forces.     

A two-step, one-pot enzymatic synthesis of 2-substituted 1,3-diols

A biocatalytic cascade reaction was designed for the stereoselective synthesis of optically pure 2-alkyl-1,3-diols employing two enzymes. The cascade process consists of two consecutive steps: a stereoselective diketone reduction and a hydroxy ketone reduction. Chiral diols were formed by the addition of ketoreductases in the same vessel, in high stereoselectivity and chemical yield, without the isolation of the intermediate β-hydroxy ketones.     

Terahertz generation based on parametric conversion: from saturation of conversion efficiency to back conversion

By stacking alternatively rotated gallium phosphide (GaP) plates, the maximum photon conversion efficiency of 40% for the terahertz (THz) generation based on difference-frequency generation has been achieved. The corresponding peak power generated inside the four GaP plates approaches 4 kW. As the number of plates is increased from four to five, the THz output power is significantly decreased, due to back parametric conversion.     

Trifluoroacetic acid-promoted synthesis of 3-hydroxy, 3-amino and spirooxindoles from α-keto-N-anilides

Ketoanilides containing alkyl side chains were readily cyclized to 3-hydroxy-2-oxindoles or spirooxindoles by a single or double intramolecular Friedel-Crafts reaction in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) at room temperature or at 45 °C. α-Iminocarboxamides, generated in situ from ketoamides, cyclized similarly to 3-aminooxindoles under identical conditions.     

Compact and portable terahertz source by mixing two frequencies generated simultaneously by a single solid-state laser

We have demonstrated a compact and portable terahertz (THz) source, based on difference-frequency generation in a GaSe crystal. The two input frequencies, required for achieving frequency mixing, are generated by a single Q-switched Nd:YLF laser incorporating two laser resonators. The average power of the THz output reaches 1 μW at 1.64 THz (182 μm) within a linewidth of 65 GHz. Such a THz source can be packaged into a compact and portable system.     

Two-Stage Seebeck Effect in Charged Colloidal Suspensions

We discuss the peculiarities of the Seebeck effect in stabilized electrolytes containing the colloidal particles. Its unusual feature is the two stage character, with the linear increase of differential thermopower as the function of colloidal particles concentration n⊙ during the first stage (“initial state”) and dramatic drop of it at small n⊙ during the second one (“steady state”). We show that the properties of the initial state are governed by the thermo-diffusion flows of the mobile ions of the stabilizing electrolyte medium itself and how the colloidal particles participate in the formation of the electric field in the bulk of the suspension. In its turn, we attribute the specifics of the steady state thermoelectric effect the massive colloidal particles undergoing slow thermal diffusion and the break down of their electro-neutrality in the vicinity of electrodes.     

Reconciling Electrostatic and n→π* Orbital Contributions in Carbonyl Interactions

Interactions between carbonyl groups are prevalent in protein structures. Earlier investigations identified dominant electrostatic dipolar interactions, while others implicated lone pair n→π* orbital delocalisation. Here these observations are reconciled. A combined experimental and computational approach confirmed the dominance of electrostatic interactions in a new series of synthetic molecular balances, while also highlighting the distance-dependent observation of inductive polarisation manifested by n→π* orbital delocalisation. Computational fiSAPT energy decomposition and natural bonding orbital analyses correlated with experimental data to reveal the contexts in which short-range inductive polarisation augment electrostatic dipolar interactions. Thus, we provide a framework for reconciling the context dependency of the dominance of electrostatic interactions and the occurrence of n→π* orbital delocalisation in C=O⋅⋅⋅C=O interactions.     

A convenient method for the assignment of relative configuration of acyclic alpha-alkyl-beta-hydroxy carbonyl compounds by (1)H NMR

The relative configuration of acyclic alpha-alkyl-beta-hydroxy carbonyl compounds can be determined by using (1)H NMR spectroscopy. The assignment can be achieved by recording the (1)H NMR spectrum of the syn-anti mixture. The upfield carbinol hydrogen signal belongs to the anti whereas the downfield to the syn stereoisomer.
