InAs/GaAs (1 1 1)A heteroepitaxial systems

We studied the structural, electrical, and mechanical properties of an InAs thin film grown on GaAs (1 1 1)A substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. In contrast to conventionally used (0 0 1) surfaces, where Stranski–Krastanov growth dominates the highly mismatched heteroepitaxy, layer-by-layer growth of InAs can be established. One of the largest advantages of this unique heteroepitaxial system is that it provides a two-dimensional electron gas system in the near-surface region without the problem of electron depletion. We review the fundamental properties and applications of this unique heteroepitaxial system.     

Quantum Hall effect in back-gated InAs/GaSb heterostructures under a tilted magnetic field

We investigate the quantum Hall effect (QHE) in the InAs/GaSb hybridized electron–hole system grown on a conductive InAs substrate which act as a back-gate. In these samples, the electron density is constant and the hole density is controlled by the gate-voltage. Under a magnetic field perpendicular to the sample plane, the QHE appears along integer Landau-level (LL) filling factors of the net-carriers, where the net-carrier density is the difference between the electron and hole densities. In addition, longitudinal resistance maxima corresponding to the crossing of the extended states of the original electron and hole LLs make the QHE regions along integer-ν_net discontinuous. Under tilted magnetic fields, these R_xx maxima disappear in the high magnetic field region. The results show that the in-plane magnetic field component enhances the electron–hole hybridization and the formation of minigaps at LL crossings.     

On the pagenumber of trivalent Cayley graphs

Book embedding of graphs is one of the graph layout problem. It is useful for the multiprocessor network layout or the fault-tolerant processor arrays. We show that the trivalent Cayley graphs proposed by Vadapalli and Srimani can be embedded in five pages, and show some additional results on cube-connected cycles.     

Improvement of Dispersion and Release Properties of Nifedipine in Suppositories by Complexation with 2-Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin

Geometries, electronic properties and NMR-shielding of cucurbit[5]uril, decamethylcucurbit[5]uril, cucurbit[6]uril, cucurbit[7]uril, and cucurbit[8]uril are investigated with DFT calculations. All molecules are highly symmetrical with a distinct geometric flexibility. In addition with a characteristic partial charge distribution these findings account for their chemical complex building ability.     

Improvement of some pharmaceutical properties of nocloprost by β- and γ-Cyclodextrin Complexation

Inclusion complexation of nocloprost, a potent antiulcer prostaglandin derivative, with -, -, and -cyclodextrins (CyDs) in aqueous solutions has been studied by the solubility method and¹³C-NMR spectroscopy. The steric requirement of host-guest interaction was reflected in the magnitude of the stability constants and the thermodynamic parameters of the inclusion complexes. Solid complexes of nocloprost with - and -CyDs in a molar ratio of 1 : 2 were obtained on the basis of aBs-type phase solubility diagram. The X-ray diffraction data suggested that nocloprost is included in the cylindrical channel formed by coaxial alignment of -CyD molecules to give a channel type structure. Release and thermal behavior of the solid complexes was examined and compared with nocloprost itself. The results indicated that the -CyD complex may have great utility among the three CyDs, being a rapid dissolving form of nocloprost with improved thermal stability.     

Raman spectroscopic studies on methane + tetrafluoromethane mixed-gas hydrate system

Raman spectra of intramolecular vibration mode for each guest species in the methane + tetrafluoromethane (CF₄) mixed-gas hydrate crystal have been measured at 291.1 K. Both of pure guest species generate the structure-I hydrate in the present pressure ranges. Isothermal phase-equilibrium curve exhibits two discontinuous points around the equilibrium methane compositions (water-free) in the gas phase of 0.3 and 0.8. At the above points, the Raman spectra of both guest molecules have been drastically changed. One of the most important findings is that the crystal of methane + tetrafluoromethane mixed-gas hydrate shows the structural phase-transition (from the structure-I to the structure-II and back to the structure-I) caused by composition changes.
