Status of heavy element research using a gas-filled recoil separator at RIKEN

A gas-filled type of recoil separator for heavy element research was installed at an experimental hall of RIKEN Linear Accelerator facility to realize getting higher intensity of primary beam and long beam time. Performance of the separator was studied using target recoils and various nuclear reactions. The results show the high performance of the separator for heave element research. As an application of the GARIS, production and identification of an isotope of the 110th element ²⁷¹[110] have been performed using the ²⁰⁸Pb(⁶⁴Ni,1n)²⁷¹[110] reaction. Three decay chains coincide well both in decay times and energies with the ones reported by the group of SHIP experiment at GSI, Germany. Our results provide a confirmation of the synthesis of an isotope ²⁷¹[110] of element 110.     

Effect of Hydrolysis Conditions on the Direct Formation of Nanoparticles of Ceria–Zirconia Solid Solutions from Acidic Aqueous Solutions

The effect of the cation concentration, hydrolysis temperature, and composition in the CeO₂–ZrO₂ system on the direct precipitation of ceria–zirconia solid solutions and the structure of the precipitates from acidic aqueous solutions of (NH₄)₂Ce(NO₃)₆ and ZrOCl₂ by hydrolysis under hydrothermal conditions were investigated. Nanometer-sized (8–10 nm) ceria–zirconia solid solution particles in a composition range of 0 to 60 mol% ZrO₂ were directly precipitated from the solutions with total metal cation concentration less than 0.2 mol/dm³ by simultaneous thermal hydrolysis at 150–240°C. The crystalline phase of the precipitates gradually changed from cubic and/or tetragonal to monoclinic with increasing the cation concentration of the solution from 0.2 to 0.8 mol/dm³ at the starting composition of 50 mol% ZrO₂ under hydrolysis condition of 150°C for 48 h, which was attributed to decrease in the supply of hydrolyzed Ce component caused by decrease in the hydrolysis ratio of (NH₄)₂Ce(NO₃)₆. Ceria–zirconia solid solutions containing large amount of ZrO₂ maintained high specific surface area and small-sized crystallite after heat-treatment at 900–1000°C for 1 h.     

Self-assembled lipid nanotube hosts: The dimension control for encapsulation of nanometer-scale guest substances

Supramolecular nanotube hosts with precisely controlled inner or outer diameters have been synthesized by self-assembly of unsymmetrical bolaamphiphilic monomers or glucopyranosylamide lipids, respectively. Time-resolved fluorescent measurement using 8-anilinonaphthalene-1-sulfonate (ANS) as a probe revealed that the water confined in a cardanyl-β-D -glucopyranoside lipid nanotube has relatively lower solvent polarity corresponding to that of propanol than bulk water. Extensively developed hydrogen bond networks also characterize the confined water in comparison to the case in bulk water. Encapsulation ability of the glucopyranosylamide lipid nanotube has been examined by filling the lyophilized LNTs with gold or silver nanoparticles, ferritin, or magnetic crystals. Filling the unsymmetrical bolaamphiphile nanotube possessing positively charged inner surfaces with negatively charged polymer beads or ferritin proved to be successful without depending on capillary action. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Formal synthesis of tubelactomicins via a transannular Diels-Alder approach

A formal synthesis of the antimicrobial tricyclic macrolides, tubelactomicins A and E, featured by a transannular Diels-Alder (TADA) approach, has been explored. The key issue for the transannular cyclization was the synthesis of a 24-membered macrolactone equipped with all the requisite functionalities, which has been achieved using an intramolecular Hiyama cross-coupling strategy. The Hiyama coupling reaction spontaneously triggered off the TADA reaction. From the endo-TADA adduct, formal syntheses of tubelactomicins A and E were achieved. The 24-membered macrolactone formation was also achieved via an intramolecular ring-closing metathesis approach.     

Preparation of Sr2CeO4:Eu3+,Dy3+ white luminescence phosphor particles and thin films by using an emulsion liquid membrane system

Sr(2)CeO(4) and Sr(2)CeO(4):Eu(3+),Dy(3+) phosphor particles and thin films were prepared by using an emulsion liquid membrane (ELM, water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) emulsion) system, containing VA-10 (2-methyl-2-ethylheptanoic acid) as extractant (cation carrier). A two-step extraction enabled efficient extraction for Sr(3+) and rare earth ions, and the resulting precursor metal oxalate particles produced in the internal water phase of the ELM system were about 60 nm in diameter. Calcination of the oxalate particles in air gave submicrometer-sized Sr(2)CeO(4) and Sr(2)CeO(4):Eu(3+),Dy(3+) particles, which showed blue and white luminescence, respectively, by UV excitation. Blue and white luminescence phosphor thin films were also prepared by soaking alumina substrates into the W/O emulsion containing precursor oxalate particles, followed by calcination in air.
