A remark on the moduli field of a curve

We give a purely algebro-geometric proof of the fact that every nonsingular projective curve can be defined over a finite extension of its moduli field. This extends a result byWolfart [7] to curves over fields of arbitrary characteristic. Received: 30 November 2001     

Injective hulls are not natural

In a category with injective hulls and a cogenerator, the embeddings into injective hulls can never form a natural transformation, unless all objects are injective. In particular, assigning to a field its algebraic closure, to a poset or Boolean algebra its Mac-Neille completion, and to an R-module its injective envelope is not functorial, if one wants the respective embeddings to form a natural transformation. Weak Factorization Systems and Topological Functors

Weak factorization systems, important in homotopy theory, are related to injective objects in comma-categories. Our main result is that full functors and topological functors form a weak factorization system in the category of small categories, and that this is not cofibrantly generated. We also present a weak factorization system on the category of posets which is not cofibrantly generated. No such weak factorization systems were known until recently. This answers an open problem posed by M. Hovey.     

Some open categorical problems inTop

In this paper, a pendant to a recent survey paper, the authors discuss several open problems in categorical topology. The emphasis is on topology-oriented problems rather than on more general category-oriented ones. In fact, most problems deal with full subconstructs or superconstructs of the constructTop of topological spaces and continuous maps.

Odd‐sized partitions of Russell‐sets

In the setting of ZF, i.e., Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory without the Axiom of Choice (AC), we study partitions of Russell‐sets into sets each with exactly n elements (called n ‐ary partitions), for some integer n. We show that if n is odd, then a Russell‐set X has an n ‐ary partition if and only if |X | is divisible by n. Furthermore, we establish that it is relative consistent with ZF that there exists a Russell‐set X such that |X | is not divisible by any finite cardinal n > 1 (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
